It's on now Stage 5 on this Versus Channel. This is so beautiful to watch these pros with legs bigger than their upper bodies.

Police at Liquigas team's hotel, take away Beltran after positive test

    ESPN.com news services

AURILLAC, France -- The Tour de France just got dirtier.

Veteran Spanish rider Manuel Beltran was kicked off the scandal-ridden Tour and was in police custody Friday after testing positive for EPO.

Manuel Beltran became the first doping casualty of the 2008 Tour de France when he was kicked out of the race Friday after testing positive for EPO.

Liquigas cycling team spokesman Paolo Barbieri said Beltran was suspended from the team and that police were searching other Liquigas riders' rooms. If a second backup sample is also positive, Beltran will be fired, Barbieri said.

"When are these idiots going to learn that it's over?" Pat McQuaid, chief of the International Cycling Union, told The Associated Press by telephone. "They continue to think that they can beat the system. They're wrong. The system is catching up all the time.

"It is very damaging to the sport. Once more, the sport suffers."

Beltran tested positive on July 5 after the first stage of the Tour.

"There are not just traces of EPO, there is EPO," Pierre Bordry, leader of the French anti-doping agency, told the AP. "Whether there is a lot or a little, EPO is forbidden."

Bordry said Beltran had been targeted after his "parameters were abnormal" during pre-Tour blood testing July 3-4.

"Yes ... that was why he was tested on Saturday" July 5, he said.

He said other cyclists with "suspicious" parameters from the pre-Tour tests also had been targeted, but he would not say who they were.

Race organizers had pledged a tougher approach to combatting drug cheats at this year's Tour. Eight specially trained chaperones shadow riders after each stage, even climbing onto team buses, to ensure cyclists go to post-stage anti-doping checks.

An official of the police division responsible for public health said police are questioning Beltran about how he got the drug and where he took it. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A strong climber, Beltran helped Lance Armstrong win the Tour in 2003, 2004 and 2005, often pulling the Texan up the steep climbs.

Beltran is the fourth former Armstrong teammate to test positive for doping; the others were Floyd Landis, Tyler Hamilton and Roberto Heras.

The Tour was devastated by doping scandals last year, when pre-race favorite Alexandre Vinokourov of Kazakhstan tested positive for blood doping; Spaniard Iban Mayo was busted for using EPO; and race leader Michael Rasmussen was kicked out just days before the end for lying about his whereabouts to avoid pre-Tour drug tests.

And in the 2006 Tour, American Floyd Landis tested positive for synthetic testosterone after a spectacular comeback ride that set the stage for his victory. He later was stripped of the title after a long court battle.

None is riding in this year's Tour.

It's a DREAM of mine to ride Alpe d'Huez. I'll bonk for sure! But I like to think I can beat that mountain!

My husband rode it back in 2004. It was quite a challenge mostly because it was the morning of the TDF time trial up the mountain. I woosed out because of the traffic and crowds. Instead I rode down a mountain to some city the name of which I can't remember at the moment. Then took a bus to the base of Alp d'Huez and then walked up about 2 miles to watch the time trial. My husband made it to the top. It was quite a day.

big stage today ... 3 HC climbs including the galibier and alpe d'huez ...

watch out for the austrian Kohl and CSC has to punish evans today or else they will not have a chance on the TT ...

Too bad about VandeVelde yesterday. Nobody knew he crashed until he was interviewed after the stage, but it put him way behind.

Wasn't that some crash with Augustyn (sp?)? I wanted to see where his bike was but they never showed it. I think Phil said it was "miles" down the valley, but find that hard to believe.

It is unimaginable that these riders are going to climb Alp d'Huez AFTER climbing two other mountains. I would need more than EPO to get me up that big hill!!

I'm not going to check this thread again until tomorrow morning. We are not watching the tour today. We are saving up for tonight so we can watch it without knowing what is going to happen. It is going to be our beer and pizza night. ha! Kind of funny to watch such a strenous activity while sitting on the couch eating fatty foods and drinking alcohol!

vande velde crashed on the climb?? ... i was reading the newsflashes and they just kept saying that they had no clue where he was?? ... strange ...

yeah - it was on a rocky section of the mountain so no trees to stop the bike from falling way down ... too bad for the guy ... he was first leading over the last climb yesterday ...

He got behind on the climb, but he said he was only 34 seconds behind when they topped the mountain. It was on the descent that he crashed along with a Cofidis rider. There was apparently nothing on race radio and no cameras caught it. Odd.

i missed the replay of the stage and was only following based on the website but my buddy was watching live and he said that the commentators did not know where he was ...

the descent yesterday was very technical ... menchov lost 15 seconds (which is huge) to the main GC contenders on the descent alone ...

It's difficult for me watching the coverage here in Oz with the commentators support of Cadel Evans. Not Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen but the post-race people. I must be the only Aussie that isn't cheering for Cadel Evans and only wish he lost more time last night.

Why aren't you cheering for Cadel? Any specific reasons?

based on the first TT - he has a shot ... both Evans and Menchov were faster than him but not by as much as he was faster then the other GC contenders ... he has a shot but he'll have to bust it ...

I just think the guy is a whinger and I would prefer to see a winner who has at least won a stage. He is very boring to watch compared to some other riders and I haven't seen him attack once. He has also been banging on about 3 against 1 the whole tour. He also headbutted a camera that was in his way the other day just after he crossed the line.

I actually like most of the other Aussie riders and have been enjoying the aggression of CSC and hope that Sastre can repay his team for their efforts.
