A true giant in American culture. He understood what so few can grasp, that true art requires compassion in spades. One of the last of a dying breed. Even though he had all but retired, the world just feels a little poorer without him.

A good and often overlooked Newman film is "Nobody's Fool." A low-key story with a very fine and subtle performance, well worth seeking out.

one of the best actors of all time. RIP
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
  • i would say he was the best american actor ever RIP ........

He's one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite.

I loved him in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with Elizabeth Taylor.

Don't know if you pet lovers were aware that he also offers an organic brand of Newman's own pet foods. I have to order it off the internet. But it's worth it because my kitty loves it. And just like with his people food, the profits go towards charity.

I read somewhere that the whole "Newman's Own" thing started out as a joke between him and another friend. It blossomed into something really amazing and beautiful.

    God's speed Mr. Newman.
I wish a guy like Eddie, would like me.

I remember the thread you started on the Movie *COOL HAND LUKE* and a great thread/discussion it was. A great movie with some great acting. Here's a bit on what I said in that thread.

One of the finest people and actors ever. I haven't seen most of his movies, but "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "Cool Hand Luke" are two of the greatest movies ever made.

I make it a point to buy his "Newman's Own" products whenever possible. I hope the line continues when he's gone. God bless him and his family.

There's a great book about how the business started, written by his partner, A.E. hotchner. basically, he started packaging some of his stuff for friends. Then, they decided to sell it because it was so popular. The mareting company said they had to put his face on the bottle so it would sell. newman was against it at first, but agreed to put his face on the bottle, but said he couldn't profit from it with his face on there, and that all profits should go to charity. they've raised hundreds of millions for his "Hole In The Wall" Camps, for sick children. The book is a great read, and of course, every dime goes to the camps for sick kids.

The line will continue. His daughter has a hand in it, she runs the organics division. I also love the stuff. I use the marinara, iced tea, lemonade, grape juice, cereals, salad dressings, marinades, and more. It feels good nowing that the money is going to a camp for sick kids, but the stuff is all great on top of it.

The irony is that his food product company, Newman's Own, donated 100% of its profits to cancer charities, totalling almost 200 million in donations in total.
