I may have to sign up for the Spring Months (March, April, May etc) challenges. I wanted to wear some nice skirts I bought in 2003 to a conference next week. I just tried them on, and . . . . we'll maybe some other year. So depressing I decided to eat ringdings. The good news is that I'm more committed to running this year, and I'm more committed to making my own food, so I expect the slow, stable, and maintainable weight loss is possible.

Started a fast on the 10th. Today is day 14 day of the fast and I've lost 24 pounds. A person fasting generally loses about a pound a day with just water or 1/2 a pound with juice.
So I should be down about 30 lbs on the month.
You can count me in for March if you would like as I should lose about 30 lbs again. Then I will break my fast.
Shooting for a bit over 40 days.
Now the key is to change my exercise and eating habits once the fast is over, so I plan on getting into a life changing routine after that. Now you might say doing a 40 day fast is difficult and you are correct, but the really hard part is getting into that eating/exercising routine.

Why are you trying to lose it so quickly? Are you fasting simply for weight loss?
Why are you trying to lose it so quickly? Are you fasting simply for weight loss?
Are you actually serious?
Not fasting for weight loss. Fasting for my health. Weight loss is a nice side effect. I've been fasting on and off for 10 years and it is in all my research totally safe and healthy.
Now I would NEVER recommend anyone fast for longer than a week without supervision or extended knowledge or their own body and limitations. AND research about the process and with the knowledge that Fasting is NOT starving.
Read this if you like. It is one of many sites that explain all about fasting.

I won't get into too many details, but you're gonna do lots of damage to yourself with that kind of fast. Fasting does 3 things really well:
1. Flushes your body of toxins
2. Destroys lots of muscle tissue
3. Brings your metabolism to a screeching halt.
The only benefits you get from fasting can be obtained from just drinking about 1.5 gallons of water per day in addition to eating healthy.
Does flush the body of toxins.
Does slow metabolism during the fast.
Does not waste muscle, or at least not enough to matter.
In studies of persons who died of starvation. That is some one whose body was done fasting and then needed to eat but didn't the body consumed something like:
97% Fat
Very low % of Organs and Muscle was second on the list I can't quite remember but I think it was 15%.
Muscle is only consumed at a high rate when fat is near gone.
I would love sources on your information if you have them because I've tried to find negatives as I want to be as educated as hell on this issue. Just can't seem to find anything except for unfounded innuendo about the dangers.
Metabolism is quickly returned to normal after a fast and muscle can be rebuilt.
Muscle is only consumed at a high rate when fat is near gone.
No specific resource at-hand, but if this were true, there'd be no such thing as essential amino acids. They are a nutritional requirement that the body can't produce on it's own. You have to get them from your diet. Their turnover is about 3 hours or so...after that, if you don't eat more of them, your body starts to break down muscle tissue to get them. Over a night's sleep, this loss will be insignificant. Over 40 days, it will be.
I'm sorry but posting pics of an actor who for many factors could look buff in one picture and emaciated in another is not proof of anything.
For example many actors buff up going crazy with weights and sometimes steroids to play a roll. Not weightlifting will bring muscles back down to earth.
Now depending on how long someone fasts then yes some muscle will be lost. But just as quickly can be rebuilt for NO ill effects.
As for your note that fasting is starving you are way off base.
Fasting is the bodies built in ability to deal with lack of food in a systematic and intelligent way.
Starving is when you have past the point of the body using up it's reserve and now it is using organ tissue to sustain life which leads to death.
Your arguments are the same unfounded ones I find from uneducated sources.
I don't mean to be harsh but I'm searching for real information and it is frustrating to keep getting the same B.S.
Are there any long term detrimental facts. I have yet to find them.
Eating unhealthy leads to diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure etc.
What does fasting lead to other than immediate relief from these dangers?
ya know, i think i have to stop signing up for the challenges. when i don't....when i simply keep my goals to myself, i seem to fare much better and stick with it. or maybe it's simply coincidental that the 2-3x i have joined in, i happened to lose all my motivation. so yes, thus far...i just keep gaining/losing the same 5 pounds since january. i'd say i'd join the march challenge, but i actually want to lose weight! actually, march and april...i'll probably hardly ever be here at all, so rejoice! , hahahaha.....waaaayyyyyy too busy with work then. hopefully though, my 'personal challenge' will kick in, and i WILL lose it! i truly wanted to be so much further along and maintaining long before summer. hopefully i still will get there....feel good, healthy and comfy! good luck all you losers!

I totally understand what you're saying. It's such a mental game for some people (myself included), so you just have to find what keeps you motivated to keep going. I know that there are times that joining a "group effort" like this only serves to make me more obsessed and, ultimately, less successful! For some reason, this is really helping me stay on track right now.
Good luck, d2d! Just keep thinking about those jeans you want to get back into! You can do it!

i really should hang those jeans up in the kitchen.
honestly, i think because it took me until my 30s to ever HAVE any sort of 'weight-issue'...i am just so behind in even having metnal games and such around food. haha. i realize i just have bad, bad, bad habits.......and i do use food as a reward, as comfort.....and a few bad years plus aging, metabolism changes = recipe for disaster. it could be much worse. hell, i still got told what a very fine looking woman i was just friday! hahaha. so it can't be all that bad. but hell yea...looking back, it's like how in the hell was i SUCH a skinny chick, and now....not? absolutely though....40 looms this year. 40! and there is just NO way i am turning 40 and NOT being fabulous. i had some of my best times, and my absolute worst times in my 30s...i feel majorly on the upswing, so i want to enter the my next decade on the right note. feeling great, being healthy.....and you BET....wearing sexyass jeans.
I am again thoroughly convinced that exercise is magic.
It helps at both ends...it burns calories and it helps one have less appetite too!!
any tips?
what do you do? how often and how much?
i am not nor have ever really been an 'exerciser.' i also know that EVERYthing says you should be, for overall health, weight mantainence, etc. nowadays i DO get in probably 35-45 minutes of brisk walking 5x a week, but i really haven't seen any effects from that yet, although i am sure it is doing me good, somewhere. so i am always curious what people do.
granted, i still need to focus on diet b/c i go through horrific eating phases that i really need to curb/control...but i am sure excersize would definitely help. i don't have much time for it, but beyond the walking M-F, perhaps i could motivate myself on saturdays to stop being a sloth and gear up! haha.
I had to weigh in at the doc's office today, so I can say I have *officially* lost 10lbs this month!
Thank goodness. I did a little indulging in past two weeks and thought for sure the scale would tell me what kind of damage I'd done. Phew. Got lucky.
Walking can be a real trip

That's awesome. I totally flaked all Fall. But, if I can lose 8-10lbs per month for the next 3-4 months, I will be at a damn fine weight.
Thanks for starting this thread.

The body fat percentage is about the same for each pic, believe it or not. You definitely do lose muscle and fat at the same time when you starve.
And again, you can get the same benefits from a fast in other ways.
For example many actors buff up going crazy with weights and sometimes steroids to play a roll. Not weightlifting will bring muscles back down to earth.

Sorry to hijack this thread. I am done posting other than about weight loss.
Anyone who wants to know about fasting can start with the article I posted.
If you want to look further or not is your business. I'm not trying to convert anyone. Just mentioning what I've learned.
If someone wants to email me I would be interested. This is my last post on the subject here.
Thanks,
