  • Can't wait for this one...hopefully I'll see it Wednesday. I've been trying to avoid the previews. I just know that Joel Coen is the man, and I love his work. He and David Lynch are probably my 2 favorite filmmakers right now.

its amazing how many people dont realize how good this band is live... lol anyways, not trying hijack the thread, but ridiculous to begin and end your venture into their world at that youtube video from 1992..

Haven't heard of the movie, but I love the poem:

WB Yeats - Sailing to Byzantium

That is no country for old men. The young
In one another's arms, birds in the trees
    - Those dying generations - at their song,
    The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
    Monuments of unageing intellect.

An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
    Monuments of its own magnificence;
And therefore I have sailed the seas and come
To the holy city of Byzantium.

O sages standing in God's holy fire
As in the gold mosaic of a wall,
Come from the holy fire, perne in a gyre,
And be the singing-masters of my soul.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal
It knows not what it is; and gather me
    Into the artifice of eternity.

Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamelling
    To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a golden bough to sing
To lords and ladies of Byzantium
Of what is past, or passing, or to come.

A lot of people had a problem with the ending..I kinda did initially as well, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made..

    i can see that.
i had a problem with it for all of 2 seconds, and then immediately appreciated it as is. there were quite a few people in the theatre who seemed to NOT like the flick period...but i heard plenty saying how great it was too. i thought it sooooo well done, and seriously......javier.......*chills*....what a fucking role! and the scottish actress, can't remember her name...but she played the wife, soooooo good!

btw - the whole "quarter thing"....priceless...BOTh times!

I just saw an interview on Charlie Rose that had the Coen brothers, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem and they were talking about this movie. I'm definitely checking this movie out now!
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

i haven't seen josh brolin in anything in ages...and then here he is, pops up in the TWO most recent new movies i've seen: american gangster and no country for old men.....and solid performances in both.

  • great ending, like the book, they didnt sugar-coat it like a typical hollywood bullshit ending.

saw it this morning and it was awesome. some people around me were grumbling after it ended, but i thought the movie as a whole was fantastic. i would expect (ok - hope) that brolin, bardiem and jones to get oscar noms.

and josh brolin's wife in the movie was diane (ewan mcgregor's chick) from transpotting. and her mom in 'no country' was the woman that was sticking up for jim cunningham (patrick swayze's character) in donnie darko. good times.
  • The hitman scored in top ten for body count and menacing ambience too.
