Going to Hawaii on 1/24/08 until 1/30/08. What should I do for fun?

I know a lot of people on here have travelled to Hawaii recently for Kukua or the PJ shows in 06. I was wondering if anyone can post (my PM box is too full as always) some good links of places they like in Hawaii.
We are staying on Waikiki beach. I plan on doing Diamondhead for sure, snorkeling at Hanama(spelled differently) Bay, renting scooters, and taking surfing lessons.
I would like to know good places to hike with rainforest/waterfalls, a good place to take surfing lessons, other good snorkeling spots, nice beaches people don't know about, where to rent scooters, etc.
Any info is appreciated!
Thanks!

Go around ruining There Will Be Blood for the Hawaiian folk in case the movie hasn't hit the islands yet?

  • Saw PJ there last year, Definitely go to the North Shore. Theres a national park over there that has a short, but beautiful hike to a waterfall. I would definitely suggest spending lots of time on the North Shore, its more laid back and prettier than Waikiki.
And go to Duke's for breakfast:)
oh and i dont know if you're into history at all, but Pearl Harbor is worth seeing
I'll see if I can find some links

Lanikai is my favorite beach on Oahu. It has great swimming and is the postcard-perfect lounging beach.

It's not hard to find, either. From Waikiki take H1 to the Pali Highway (61). Take the Pali over to the Windward side of Oahu. I'm sure you'd be able to get directions from your hotel. Lanikai Beach is in a very residential area, but there are many public access points to the beach on Mokulua Drive. Go there on a weekday to beat any crowds.

    Please, keep em coming!
    Also, thank you mods...
  • if ur staying on waikiki go to the Hans Hedemann surf shop for lessons they are amazingg. going hiking, i would consider doing the hike and bike hawaii-www.bikehawaii.com, they take you through a rainforest to a waterfall and then you bike down a hill with awesome views. and if you have enough time it takes about 1.5- 2 hours to drive to the north shore and their u can walk to waimea bay falls and swim in it which is really nice. and also you can kayake and snokel at lanakai beach, which was the prettiest beach i have ever seen, and its secluded---
http://www.kailuasailboards.com/kayakrental.html. and places to eat are dukes, cheeseburger in paradise, and deffinatly eat at lulu's. also, if your hiking up diamond head make sure to get an early start because the later in the day u start, you get massive sunburn oh and bring plenty of water with you cause u have to walk up like 100 steps, literally.
    have fun! :]

EDIT: NVM i think it only takes 45 minutes to drive from waikiki to the north shore, sorry about that.

Thank you for all the suggestions, awesome! I have done Diamondhead before, I loved it! As for your food places, I am vegan, do those fit? The only food I ate last time I was in hawaii was bean burittos from T-bell with no cheese or peanut butter and jelly.

your welcome! if i think of more stuff i'll let you know. yeah im pretty sure cheese burger in paradise have veggie burgers. lulu's have awsome salads, but unfortunatly i dont think dukes would be a good choice, although they do have a great salad bar and really cool bar area.

and all the things i mentioned are walking distance in waikiki, except the hike and bike, and the kayake or snorkel, but they both have someone pick you up at your hotel.

Oh man, I was at Dukes just about every night I was in Hawaii! I met KOL there, I believe the night of 12/2 PJ show!
I'm hoping I bump into Bonowall there, he was always there!

I'm vegan & I found Hawaii very vegan friendly.

Also I stayed only on Oahu but I loved snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. I am a total wimp & a ton of fish swimming towards me tends to scare me a little (a lot) but that place was GREAT. Really beautiful. Just don't hold too many peas at once.

If you want a really nice dinner out, go to the rotating restaurant on friday night to see the fireworks, great show! Great food. The fireworks explode over the skyline as the restaurant rotates around.
Forget what anyone says about leaving Oahu for another island. You will get all you need from the North Shore. Leave early in the morning for the North Shore and comeback to town just after rush hour and before dark. You can run into some really amazing people on Sunset Beach, and that's all I'll say about that. Just hang out on the beach all day and watch the surf competitions, bring a bottle of wine or whatever and don't forget to catch the green flash! Oh, my heart misses Hawaii, I can't wait to go back! Pearl Jam Please play Hawaii again and again!!!!
