ok...technically I dumped her but I got a viscious 3 page email that called me "immature" for being "obsessed with Pearl Jam" among other offenses..

I was driving in today listening to "All or None" from the accoustic pre-set at 7/11/03...

    This is a friggin' classic!

I suppose if I was obsessed with Opera or Josh Grodin, I would be more "mature"???

I get this "immature" comment about my love for PJ all the time..

    WTF?

I'm 43 and have been following PJ since 1992.

I'm not going to suddenly develop a taste for Big Band music or Classical music any time soon...

Like i told her... "I'mmmmmmmmmmm Gone!"

This is a damn good post! Thats too badd for HER. She obviously does NOT know the power of the P & the J!!!! Let it wash away..... :D

My friend dumped his gf after MSG 1 in 2003. He couldn't believe how amazing the show was and his gf was like eh, it was ok. And he was like if a girl I've dated for two years can't realize how great a show that was and how important PJ is to him then she's not worth it.

So the next morning after the show, he calls me up and says he has an extra ticket to MSG2 for free because he broke up with his gf. I feel bad they broke up, but was glad I scored a free ticket to the Garden. ;)

i love pearl jam and i really like a lot of classical music too. you can do both. ;) i even like a lot of jazz. :)

as with most things, i am sure the 'pearl jam obsession' especially since not shared, and also she probably didn't have her own fulfilling obsession, was just one amongst many other factors. usually just a symptom of bigger issues, no? sometimes you can ride the wave out together....and sometimes you realize you have to go it alone......

i think my own husband appreciates/understands my pj love, amongst other things....as he has his own loves and passions. as long as i respect his, he respects mine...vice versa, as it should be. also why NO shit given for getting a ticket to the beacon gig, even tho seeing pj 5x the week before. :p being understood, on any level, is always a good thing. :D

This is exactly why I love my wife. She realizes the obsession and gives me no shit about it. When I wanted to drive 500 miles to see them live, I got no shit for it. Hell, she even completed my vinyl collection as a birthday gift.

Ah, maybe you didnt tune her right, mate ;)

My man got me hooked on PJ. When we first met in 1999, he said he liked PJ a lot and my reply was "aren't they old news already"
Last year we booked a vacation in the US just so we could see PJ perform in Chicago...so I guess they weren't old news after all, eeh.

And now we are getting married and there will be a lotta PJ during the day.

I even think I have become more obsessed than him :D

My husband flew us over to the other side of the country so I could see PJ play, we didnt have any dates over our side of Australia at that point.
So, we watched them play and flew back home, only to find out that they WERE playing in our city, so we went to that concert too.

Sorry to hear in both cases.

My wife is not a fan, she likes rock music, but not PJ (mainly Ed's voice), so she doesn't get my obsession (once again I recently got the "why do you have to see them 3 nights in one weekend" question), but its not enough to cause a strain in the relationship (there's plenty of other things for that ;) ).

My friends are glad she's not a fan, cause she always declines to attend PJ shows with me, and my friends who are casual fans have benefited from great 10c seats as a result.
    This weekend we rock Portland
  • Thats the way i would like to get dumped. And remember, no girl deserves more love than PJ, if you find shes getting more love than PJ seek medical help, or even better, Eddie Vedder.

    NOT TRUE.

Pearl Jam was the vehicle, but covert planning is the cause. "Dumped" is also incorrect. Unwilling to compromise for another's misfortunes, selfishness, and total disregard for other's feelings with no remorse or idea for reparation leads to destruction.

Relationships should be both giving and receiving, sacrificing and compromising at times. Good things are meant to be shared. Above all else, two people need trust to survive.

Forgiveness is ubiquitous, but must be earned.

    :D
    ain't that the truth!

while my husband is a fan, likes to hit up a couple shows.....definitely not *obsessive*...so yes, always end up sharing more with friends. however, as you said, as long as there is RESPECT for each other's interests/passions...it's all good.

i don't give him too much shit when he buys yet another bass....so he doesn't give me too much shit for traveling to europe to see pj with friends. ;) life is balance. :)

I'm not going to make any friends here by saying this, but anybody who puts a band before a realtionship deserves to get dumped, IMO.

    100% agreement here.

however, i highly doubt anyone has put a band before their relationship, at least i hope not! i would think it is merely a part of a split, or a symptm rather than a cause. i think it does come down to mutual respect tho, and part and parcel in that IS allowing each partner their own space for their own passions. of course, perhaps some take it TOO far, etc...b/c it must be agreed upon...not overspend joint funds, time spent together/pursuing personal interests and so on....but balance.

She would, however, consider it very mature of you to be obsessed with buying her shoes, shoes, and more shoes. No loss. Embrace singlehood, rock and roll, and spending your money on the good times.

  • Well, every relationship I have ever been in, the women in my lives always knew my passion and it was even a definitive point used to discuss me. Never have been called immature for it though. Past exes who still talk to me still bring it up with a smile when we talk.

should have dumped my last boyfriend for not being a fan. :o the hardest thing he listened to was Daughtry. it should have been a clue when he listened to Pearl Jam for the first time and said, "this is really hard stuff...." and he didn't seem impressed.

this is all a bit weird

isnt the point of being with someone having something in common with them in the first place - sure you might not both love pearl jam persai, but surely you must have the same musical interest, or social interests, or sport, or something. hell, surely you must like bonking in the same positions??

    something??

that said, you cant live in each others pockets either.

but dumping someone over their love of music - a particular band - but music nonetheless - you should be happy she's gone now.

In my early 20's an ex described PearlJam as my "little-boy fascination", she was sure gone after that! Annoying girlfriends with music has always been interesting, I never do this deliberatly to elicit a response, but at the back of my mind there's perhaps a little scheme of conversion playing away: telling me how much time is necessary to blood in Ten before moving onto Vitalogy, ensuring surrounding environment is pursuant to the plan......

My opinion is if someone will dump you over something like that, you are better off without them. They must be very superficial.

Well that is a different story then..but I didn't get that from reading this. I guess it's how you perceive it.
