i love all of the teachers i've every had!!!

my pre-K teacher for thinking i was smart enough to skip on up to 1st grade. and for helping to develop my future need for perfection...i only got a sad face once, and never colored outside the lines again :)

my 1st and 2nd grade teachers for helping me catch up on all the stuff i missed in kindergarten! especially mrs. chastain (2nd grade) for challenging me to improve my spelling/reading and instilling in me a love of reading!

to mr. nix...the cutest teacher my little 4th grade self had ever set eyes on...thanks for helping me to push myself to do my absolute best! and for using lollipops as a motivating factor :) i actually just e-mailed him to thank him for everything and for being such a great teacher...it was great to hear from him.

mr. cassels...the toughest teacher i've ever had, and definitely the scariest at times. i learned so much...who would've thought coming from a high school band teacher!

i wish i had the patience to be a teacher...but it's just not there. so...thanks teachers for making the world a smarter place :D

I got this email this morning from one of my son's teachers:

"I just wanted to let you know what a great job you are doing with Max and all of the progress that he has made is thanks to all your hard work and commitment. Pat yourself on the back and as soon as I get an Occupational Therapy final draft report I can insert it into the IEP and send you a copy. Have a great day call me or email me if you have any questions."

That made me feel good.........despite all the calls I get from the principal on Max's decision making issues........

thanks...and i think it's awesome how hands on you're with your son's education.

i remember my mom being really hands on when i was younger...it helped tremendously. when i was born, doctors told my parents that i'd be "slow" due to being born a couple months premature. my parents were always really supportive and pushed me to learn (w/out being crazy about it). with all of their help and w/ my teachers, i am now the only member of my family to graduate from college! take that stupid doctors...i'm smrt ;)

My son is 8 years old and a very bright kid in a social way, learning wise, he struggles.........he spent quite a lot of time in the hospital before the age of 3 years old and that has had an effect on how he learns now..........I'm told that all the time that was spent in the hospital is NON-LEARNING time and he is that far behind now in school.
He is in 2nd Grade and was struggling quite a bit. He is doing a bit better now, actually.......doing tons better. I just want to give a HUGE thanks to the teachers that have given him so much positive interaction and never ever give up on him........even when he's being a brat. I need to give a shout out to YEILD2PEARLJAM who is on the verge of getting her very own classroom and to all the teachers, who day in and day out, teach and help our kids in ways that we just can't. I can't thank you all enough!!

Share any stories here about great teachers from your past, or for your kids.....or just friends of yours. I can't wait to read about them!!

How did I miss this post! It must have been in between back to school night, the intervention suspension meeting, IEP 1, 2, and 3, and progress reports. You know, with all of these budget cuts in CA I have been thinking so hard about the choices ive made. I am working the hardest I have ever worked FOR FREE with the very large possibility that I will not have a job for the upcoming school year, yet i still love my job more than I thought I ever would. At this very moment I am on my computer trying to create a Powerpoint for tomorrow, and such is my life night after night. Everywhere I go I carry a traveling office with me complete with essays, laptop, rubrics, IEP's, and Advil.
During open house I had a student (who is totally awesome by the way. The kind of kid that is too cool for his age) whose father was very ill with liver cancer. Over the last weekend, the father passed away. A few days later at open house the mother came to be and said, " I just wanted to meet Steven's English teacher. He was so anxious to come back to school and talk to you about what was going on in our lives--I just wanted to meet you." The mother was on the verge of tears telling me that she still can not bring herself to talk to her son about his feelings and state of mind. This is all on a regular Thursday evening, and this is a situation not unalike what many teachers see on a day to day basis.
Even with all the budget cuts, and the constant blame for everyone's failure's, and the ridicule, and the lack of support, this still has to be one of the best jobs a human can have.

    Thanks Tiff, I feel better!!

I've had lots of great teachers, but my Comtech teacher Mr Costello is amazing. Totally understanding about everything (I've cut classes to go talk to friends with issues, he has no problem with it) and even lets me skip to go to concerts early, as long as I do a report on it!

My wife is a teacher and she deserves all the praise that could possibly be thrown her way. While I'm fucking off in the PJ pit and making a better salary, she is putting in 10 hour days every day and then working on the weekends. Granted, she is the most dedicated teacher I have met, but still... Honestly, if I was a teacher I would be fired after the first week for beating up 3 kids, 10 parents, and the Principal.

Sooooo many lousy, dipshit parents (who never should have bred in the first place) seem to think it is a teacher's job to raise their kids and that teachers should be accountable for their kid's behaviour. NO! That's your job, parent! Do your fuckin' job!

    THANK YOU for this thread!!

I am a fine art teacher at a highschool and it is not the picknick most people believe it to be. I deal with about 150 students a day...a day!! And they all want something from me. Little energy-eaters...haha! I am absolutely good for nothing after a day of work. Even though my classes are going great it is still hard work. If you are not feeling 100% you can not teach!

I love the kids and they give me plenty back.Every year we have an evaluation and the kids have to fill in a for about me. Last year one of the best remarks was: "She is always nice to everybody, but she is strict at the right times as well. I really like that about her!"

What I find the hardest about teaching is the criticism of the parents. Some of them seem to believe everything their kid tells them. And they can be very prejudiced about teachers.
In the ten years I have been working in education I did not get too many complaints fortunately. BUT what I find very difficult is that I only recieved a compliment from a parent ONCE!!! Once in ten years!!
So parents, give your teachers some credit and let them know how much you apreciate them.
Why not be mediocre and be the best at it that you can be?
  • To be fair, there are a ton of shit employees at any job. 80% is a ridiculous number.

I didn't say 80% of teacher were bad, I said I probably had 80% of the bad ones personally.

    im not a teacher
but i read this at work today and wondered
why didnt i go into that field ?

apparently long island is the place to go to teach and get into administration ,...

    Teaching On Long Island
Long Island has many top-paid school managers
BY JOHN HILDEBRAND | john.hildebrand@newsday.com; Staff writer M

Long Island is home to one of the heaviest concentrations of highly paid school administrators in the state: more than 2,000 superintendents, deputies, associates, assistants and other managers earning more than $153,000 in average salaries and benefits.

This concentration represents 52 percent of the 4,014 highly compensated administrators in the state's nonurban school districts, even though the Island enrolls only 29 percent of students in nonurban districts. Figures are from state Education Department records listing all school administrators earning $110,000 and up in nonurban districts.

Included on the list are 11 local school superintendents whose salaries all top the $250,000 a year paid to New York City schools Chancellor Joel Klein, who runs a system of 975,000 students.

In contrast, none of the Island's 11 highest-paid superintendents is responsible for more than 11,000 students. Klein's system is one of five urban districts excluded from the state's salary list.

Though concentrated in a small geographic area, the Island's school administrations are divided organizationally into 124 independent districts out of nearly 700 statewide - a form of suburban Balkanization that is attracting increased scrutiny from elected officials.

Three weeks ago, a Suffolk Legislature commission called for a more streamlined approach to school management to eliminate what it called "the plethora of duplicative, often costly positions."

A week later, Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi advocated a countywide "office of shared school services," with an eye toward saving money and curbing property taxes through economies of scale.

    Excessive, or appropriate?

In defending current administrative costs, Island school officials note that their districts rank among the highest achieving in the United States, that regional living costs are high, and that their salaries are proportionate to those of local teachers who also are among the nation's best paid.

"There's a lot of responsibility that comes with running schools," said James Parla, Island Trees superintendent and the president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, who added that his colleagues face increasing requirements in the form of state and federal testing standards. "The job's a lot more challenging now."

Even so, growing concentrations of school administrators are drawing the ire of local taxpayers, as well as their elected representatives.

"You know, it's ridiculous!" said Gary Besemer, a Brightwaters resident and retired postal worker who began checking administrative rolls in his own Bay Shore school district, after his property taxes had risen to what he considered an uncomfortable level.

State records show that Bay Shore is among the best-staffed districts in western Suffolk County in terms of the ratio of students to administrators. The 5,702-student district employs 33 highly compensated managers, including Superintendent Evelyn Blose Holman, whose listed salary of $275,500 is the Island's fifth highest.

    Many administrators

Also included are an assistant to the superintendent, an executive director, two assistant superintendents, seven principals, seven assistant principals and 10 directors.

"What do all these administrators do?" Besemer asked, echoing a question often raised by other members of Long Islanders for Educational Reform, a regional taxpayer group where he is active. "It's insanity!"

Holman did not respond to Newsday's request for comment.

A Newsday analysis finds that the Island's educational system is marred by growing administrative overhead and considerable duplication of effort.

    Some examples:

Across the Island, school administrative staffs have grown steadily over the past five years in proportion to the number of students enrolled. Last school year, the latest for which data is available, the regional ratio was one administrator for every 169 students, compared with one administrator for every 189 students in 2002-03. Regional enrollments leveled off during this period.

A total of 113 officials were engaged in school business management last year on the Island, with responsibility for $8.6 billion in spending. Meanwhile, New York City's school system made do with roughly the same number of business officials - 116 - while spending $17 billion, nearly twice as much.

Contrasts were even starker in terms of the number of school officials assigned to managing state and federal financial aid. Forty-six administrators were listed as working in this field on the Island, which receives about $2.9 billion in state and federal dollars. Meanwhile, New York City assigned 37 administrators to this field, with responsibility for $8.8 billion.

In other areas of school management, too, relatively large numbers of highly paid administrators work in the Island's district offices. Island schools employ 26 percent of all deputy and associate school superintendents working statewide, and nearly 33 percent of all assistant superintendents, while enrolling only 17 percent of students. Figures are for both urban and nonurban schools.

School representatives insist, however, that they already have done much on their own to achieve economies of scale. They point to the fact that most districts obtain certain back-office services such as payroll through regional BOCES agencies, while also purchasing goods and services at low-bid prices from state-approved vendors.

Moreover, Parla and other regional school leaders have expressed their willingness to cooperate with Suozzi in looking for further ways to consolidate business operations. Many, indeed, say they see potential for substantial savings in such areas as auditing, bus transportation, legal services and high-volume printing.

William Johnson, superintendent of Rockville Centre schools and a former president of the State Council of School Superintendents, said he is now discussing the possibility of joint printing operations with five other districts and would welcome Nassau County's help on other cooperative ventures.

"If the county can do some of this, we should jump at the opportunity," he said.

    Paying for administration

On Long Island, there are 124 school districts, requiring more superintendents (and more salaries) to oversee a student body that is smaller than that of New York City.

I teach preschool. I take care of 30 three year olds :) There is nothing I would rather do!

You are exactly right, the money sucks. Its really a shame because I've known many great teachers that have to do something different for financial reasons.

If you have kids, take the time to say "thank you". It means the world to me when a parent does that.

My birthday just passed, as did my first valentines day as a single person in a loooong time. My kids totally made both of those days special, just with home made cards and a few small (but very thoughtful) gifts on my birthday. Actually it was the best birthday I can remember. The kids were so excited about all of their homemade creations they brought to me.

Don't let it fool you though, despite all the headaches and the days of stress, I feel really damn lucky to be able to teach. I cannot imagine doing anything else!

Verry cool thread. You all rock!

I taught Pre-school many years ago and it took incredible patience working with my 3-5 year olds. Some of this patience came from the many teachers I had in my schooling so I give a big thank you to ALL of them and for putting up with all the shit that I gave them.

It was awesome to see these children learn and grow right before my eyes, just awesome.

    Peace
