TEACHERS.........an appreciation thread!!

I want to show how much I appreciate TEACHERS out there!!
My son is 8 years old and a very bright kid in a social way, learning wise, he struggles.........he spent quite a lot of time in the hospital before the age of 3 years old and that has had an effect on how he learns now..........I'm told that all the time that was spent in the hospital is NON-LEARNING time and he is that far behind now in school.
He is in 2nd Grade and was struggling quite a bit. He is doing a bit better now, actually.......doing tons better. I just want to give a HUGE thanks to the teachers that have given him so much positive interaction and never ever give up on him........even when he's being a brat. I need to give a shout out to YEILD2PEARLJAM who is on the verge of getting her very own classroom and to all the teachers, who day in and day out, teach and help our kids in ways that we just can't. I can't thank you all enough!!

Share any stories here about great teachers from your past, or for your kids.....or just friends of yours. I can't wait to read about them!!

  • To all my past teachers,

Thankyou for all the many years of bullying, torture, anxiety and stress. :)

But seriously...... thankyou to Mr. Matthews for being different... for being the only one who really believed in me. You're the reason I'm still writing.

Yes we can! I loved Ms. George in grade 4. She cried when she wasn't allowed to read us Bible stories anymore. But it was all good she started in on Pippi Longstocking.
  • shouts out to:

-my third grade teacher who was the ONLY elementary school teacher who didn't treat me differently because I matured (physically and mentally) too early.

-my seventh grade bio teacher- loved biology ever since

-my 11th and 12th grade calculus tutor- caught me up after 11 years of terrible math teachers (and teachers who literally told me and other students they would never be good at math) to the point that I got a 5 on calc AP

-my FAV econ professor in college and all the AMAZING profs I had both in college and grad school. I think in 6 years there was maybe one I didn't like.

My 6th grader has always struggled in school. She, too, spent some time in the hospital when she was little. It was for a broken femur. When she was 15 months old she broke her femur, spent 6 weeks in a body cast and within 2 weeks of being out of the cast, broke the damn bone again! Anyway, school has always been hard for her which frustrates me because I got straight A's.
Her math teacher now was my PE teacher when I was in 6th grade! He didn't like me, or at least that's how I remember it... Anyway, he's so good to her! Very helpful and he has great communication with me!
    Thank you, Mr. Hoag!!!
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

good thread, i always hear people knock the amount of time off they have (christmas, summers, easter, mid-winter). but i don't think those people know the amount of preparation they do for either the upcoming school year or the future lessons and the preparation for all the testing. i know because one of my best friends is a middle school social studies teacher and another is an elementary school teacher.

well to be fair, there are a TON of SHIT teachers in the world. hell, I think I had 80% of them personally. but I think as the older ones who just went into it because it's a union job with summers off are starting to retire out and people like your friend and some of my friends are becoming more of the norm- dedicated teachers who know their subjects and aren't lazy.
  • aww! This thread made me smile! It's not often teachers get the recognition they deserve, thank you :)

Three cheers to teachers for sure!! I lucked into having really great teachers most of the time when I was in school. Even in college.

Its cliché but I am inspired to teach based on some of the experiences I had with teachers of my own. Its all about paying it forward.

My fiance is a teacher so I say cheers to the (some) teachers and piss on the parents who think their precious baby shouldn't have to do any work to get an A.

To be fair, there are a ton of shit employees at any job. 80% is a ridiculous number. I'm kind of indifferent about my grade four teacher, but other than that, all of my elementary and middle school teachers were fantastic. I had a few not-so-great teachers in high school, but the majority were great teachers and a few of them were absolutely fantastic!

I'm a teacher, and some of the best elementary school teachers I have come across are the teachers who are close to retirement. Having said that, there are older teachers who have had a tough time making adjustments to all the changes in education. Also, children are a lot more difficult to manage nowadays than when they first started teaching. That, in itself, can be frustrating.

Honestly, if teachers didn't have summer holidays, they'd have nervous breakdowns. People really don't understand everything the job entails. It's very rewarding, but it's a lot of work. People tend to think that a teacher's day starts and ends with the bell. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I agree completely. A teachers job never seems to end. They take work home with them, grading, planning etc. My sons teachers get to spend more time with him than I do. I have quite a few friends that are teachers and they are WONDERFUL!! I went to a PTA meeting last night and I was so happy to hear that all the teachers were given laptops, as the PRINCIPAL stated, because so much work DOES go home with them!!

  • I had a music teacher who appreciated the fact that I couldn't play any instruments and couldn't sing, so she just used to lend me cd's to listen to and she introduced me to a whole heap of great bands.

I also had a great English teacher called Miss Rae, who was this like old posh type lady, and I used to drive her fucking mad because I used to be a bit of a dick...handing in work late etc. But I guess I must have done something right because on my last day she gave me a hug and a card saying 'stay COOL.'

I had a history teacher who gave me full marks on an essay about marxism, which was nice of her.

I also had a history teacher who said I wouldn't amount to anything, so when I got an A in hisotry a level, i went and saw him and told him to go fuck himself lol.

i love all of the teachers i've every had!!!

my pre-K teacher for thinking i was smart enough to skip on up to 1st grade. and for helping to develop my future need for perfection...i only got a sad face once, and never colored outside the lines again :)

my 1st and 2nd grade teachers for helping me catch up on all the stuff i missed in kindergarten! especially mrs. chastain (2nd grade) for challenging me to improve my spelling/reading and instilling in me a love of reading!

to mr. nix...the cutest teacher my little 4th grade self had ever set eyes on...thanks for helping me to push myself to do my absolute best! and for using lollipops as a motivating factor :) i actually just e-mailed him to thank him for everything and for being such a great teacher...it was great to hear from him.

mr. cassels...the toughest teacher i've ever had, and definitely the scariest at times. i learned so much...who would've thought coming from a high school band teacher!

i wish i had the patience to be a teacher...but it's just not there. so...thanks teachers for making the world a smarter place :D
yes...i do feel like a human. i do not feel like a tree.
