Has anyone here followed this case at all? Very interesting. I think she is innocent. I can't imagine something like happening to me or anyone I know.
There is no way she will ever get a fair trial. I think the judges in Bali are aware of this too but they don't want to look stupid. What a bummer of a mess. Poor Girl.

I've been following this off and on for years via news sites from back home, I was of the understanding many people in Australia didn't believe her, I could be wrong. I haven't seen the documentary but many Aussies have been caught in Indonesia and Thailand with drugs like this. The case I really remember is Barlow and Chambers in the late 80s, I remember the day they were hanged in Malaysia, freaked me out.

yes as an australian i/we are subjected to the schapelle corby case with regularity. i dont know whether she is guilty or not. i dont know her and i dont really know the circumstances for sure. the only opinion i hold aside from how dumb would you have to be to try and smuggle that amount of weed in your boogie board bag, is that the sentence is rather sriff for the offense. but then again i am not the indonesian authorities. people know the risks involved and the stance of many asian countries when it comes to drug smuggling.

however... check this out if you think your innocence is beyond reproach:

Regardless of her guilt or innocence I do think she's a nice little pawn for the Indonesian goverment to stick it to Australia.
How anybody involved in and leader of the organization behind such hideous terrorist activities such as the Bali bombings only gets 2 years and a girl can get 20 to life for marijuana is beyond me, but then I'm sure the Indonesian government would be more than happy to explain it away.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Bali_bombings

Most definitely I think her sentence is way too harsh, but then I think the sentences handed down to the Bali 9 are equally horrendous, just as what happened to Barlow and Chambers and Van Nguyen are a disgrace.

For all this executing traffickers that goes on, I see that none of these countries, NO COUNTRY, is actually interested in weeding out the head honchos and shutting them down, but I guess that's because some of the worlds most powerful people are involved in that. Fine upstanding citizens that they are.

I've gone from thinking she was not guilty to guilty to not guilty to guilty, so on so forth. Her family seem very dodgy, but regardless, 20 years is far too harsh. I didn't see much of the documentary, but I think it did more harm then good for her.

You really think she is guilty? yeah, 20 years is ridiculous.
I just don't think she got a fair trial at all.
There were so many things that they let go that could have proven her innocence.

any media is like a pack of piranhas around a dead cow in the water as far as im concerned, and in australia we really are inundated with reports about her and her family, but for all ive seen of this poor girl

i dont think she actually did it
but i do think her family (step brother in particular) had something to do with it
i think 20 years is an outrageous time to be put in an Indonesian jail, under those conditions
but, there again, the signs are up everywhere, you do know what you are risking
her family behave like a pack of fools over here, milking this for all its worth, and have admitted to lying in court over particular details. If they lie once, who's to say they are not lying about anything else?? Apparently the first thing her sister did when she first got pulled aside at the airport was go back to her (balinese) home, and grab a wad of cash to bribe with.

?? so who knows - but this girls life is essentially over - the movie deals, book deals, whatever she gets when she gets out will never give her back the 20 years she's had taken away.

Although I'm not surprised that Mercedes went home for the cash to bribe with, the impression I got of the place is that bribery wouldn't be unheard of in some circumstances.

Yeah, she's pretty much screwed but I'm still waiting for the day that they announce they'll release her if Australia agrees to a stay of execution for the Bali Bombers.

I think that considering that our sources of information are all second hand, it is hard to pass judgement on the verdict.

I believe that we can all agree that the sentence is too harsh by Australian standards. And the discrepency between her sentence and the sentence of others for more heinous crimes is unfair.

When her arrest was anounced, all of the cheesy current afairs shows must have wet themselves in anticipation. I don't really watch TV but even from the newspapers it is apparent that she is flavor of the month (actually, make that decade) for most sub par news and current affairs services.

:D I don't think anything that the current affairs shows have ever done or will ever do can compare to having to suffer advertising for their show featuring Roberta Williams in a bikini.

aaw c'mon! :o It was years ago! Long before I knew what they'd been up to as their day job. They never covered their school years on Underbelly did they? :D I wouldn't know, being in Victoria! ;)

First I knew about it was the day they were arrested out by Brighton Cemetary.

I wonder what Schapelle's old school friends would say about her now?
I really have always wondered about the brother and whether she took the fall for him.

oh i forgot about it being banned in vic! you must have seen it tho. and god knows why it was banned, every single person in it who isnt dead or in jail is doing their best to cash in on it now!!

besides - some of the characters were pretty hot ... i spose they were just actors tho

and back to shapelle - her whole family is a bit dodgy i think - she just had the bad luck to get lumped with it in that country - perhaps they thought a pretty young girl could get it thru easier, or be able to bribe her way out ... bit of money, bit of under the desk stuff ... but really, as i said - the signs are everywhere - you'd have to be mad to even try and get away with it, especially for just a bunch of pot stuffed in a boogieboard bag!!! how on earth is that worth years of pissing in a hole in the ground and washing yourself with a bucket of smelly water???

Yeah, no. :D I've read the book, which was still on the shelves in K-mart right through, guess the judge figured none of us read. I saw one episode when I was up in NSW visiting cate but otherwise I've not seen it. I think, well lets just say I have access to a copy. :D I just haven't bothered to watch it yet. I mean I've been reading it all in the newspapers for the last 5 years, not to mention one of the blokes getting wacked around the corner from my house. You'd have to be deaf, dumb, blind and completely oblivious to not know about it here. I'd love to know how they even managed to get a jury pool of unbiased peers together for the last two trials.
I think Damien Walsh Howling is lovely. :)

Yes, I think that's probably what happened. Perhaps even she thought she was protecting her brother and once she'd said, "That's mine" couldn't go back on it. The brother was under 18 at the time wasn't he? I think if the brother had been caught with it, had admitted to it being his that he'd be in the same situation as some of those boys in the Bali 9 by now.
Just don't think they thought it through. Denpasar airport is not really the place to be buggerizing around thinking you're dealing with a lax customs system. They have VERY BIG guns just for starters!!! Seriously though, if she genuinely didn't have anything to do with it, well I feel so sorry for her. What a shitty way to live your life? I feel sorry for her anyway. The punishment is over the top for the crime, especially given how they treat murderers and terrorists.

This constitutes news only as much as Maddy McCann does.

Lots of people get caught for drug trafficking, and lots of people go missing.

Damn media beat-ups. The next time I see this pop up on the front 5 pages of my herald again, I'm gonna cancel the friggin subscription.
