Watching sports - I still don't get the point.

I never could get into it, and to this day I still feel like an outcast because of it. When I was high school, that was mostly what kids talked about during lunch and study, so I did my best to follow the local teams, but the truth is, I never fucking cared. It seems pointless to me. Team wins. Team loses. Sometimes the dynamics that occur during the game are somewhat interesting, but when it's all over, none of it matters anymore. Seems like time wasted to me.

However, there is still something cool about Fenway Park, and once in a while I like to go to a Red Sox game, but I never watch them on TV unless I'm at a friend's home or at a bar.

Is there anyone else that shares this apparent affliction that I have?

I hear what you're saying. To an extent, I'm the same way. Don't get me wrong, I love football....could watch all day on Sundays (and pretty much do!) but at the end of the day, it doesn't have a huge affect on my life. I watch the games, follow some sports news but ultimately my life goes on whether the Pats win or lose. They lost the Superbowl but a month later my last living grandparent passed away. The Superbowl loss doesn't mean shit.

Did you play structured games in HS/college of any of the sports you have difficulty watching? Many times one can feel more of a connection with a sport if you've participated in that sport.

I played baseball and basketball when I was a kid, all the way up thru high school. I have not really played since, because I had an "incompetent vein" in my right leg, which basically would make my ankle swell up if I ran, or just if I was on my feet all day. I finally got that vein fixed this year, and it's fucking awesome - I am able to be so much more active. But anyway, who knows? Maybe that's why I lost my connection to sports, because I no longer played them.

I've never really understood the point of sports. I guess it's just another diversion for people to get into. I'll watch the Superbowl on occasion, but that's about it.

It's not really any different from music. You begin to identify with a team or players, many of the times and memories in your life become associated with the team or with the band. Same concept really. I enjoy watching sports for the same reason I enjoy going to a concert. There are plenty who don't see the point of buying tons of music or paying money to see a band live.

I've played several sports and for me they are much more fun to play than watch. Now I'll follow scores more than anything else. Although football garners more attention for me.

I agree with the prices of concerts these days are ridiculous just look at the recent and current AC/DC tour. Their prices range from $80-$175...$92.50 each for my daughter's and my tickets which I must thank my boss for. Many say just wait till it gets on DVD but at home you DON'T need earplugs like we had to wear. :)

Damn that was the (((((LOUDEST)))))) concert ever!

music, firstly. but also film, and a little bit of TV. and i should read more, but i do get caught up in a good book now and then.

but all of these things can inspire me, or make me cry - and I know sports can have the same effect on people, just not me. most athletes don't interest me, I guess. I loved the Celtic's in the 80's though.

I'm more of a seasonal fan, not in terms of casual but by the seasons of each each sports.

Right now, I'm definitely in NFL mode especially after getting into fantasy football. A slight interest in NBA for now until February rolls around- and March is great hoops month because of college b-ball.

Actually, March and April is probably my favorite month for sports.

Don't really care much for the off-season stuff really, and sometimes I don't even know who's been traded or not. :p

So if I break it down, it'll look like this. Bold are my primary interests.
Jan-Feb: NFL playoffs, NBA, college hoops, *WWE* (if that counts :p)
March-April: MLB news & spring training, college hoops, NBA, *WWE*
    May-June: NBA playoffs
July-Aug: MLB, NFL training camp/pre-season news
Sept-Oct: MLB postseason, NFL, NBA pre-season news
Nov-Dec: NFL, Pro and college hoop

The only sport I watch is hockey, and I adore hockey... Any other sport, I can't get into - even any of the horse events on TV, and I spent most of my life on horseback, competing. Something about hockey is just more fun to watch for me.... The speed, the unpredictability, how big a deal one goal is... The hits.... The saves... All of it together. To me, it's like poetry on ice. :)

But i was also raised with the Montreal Canadiens as gods. I even had a Patrick Roy poster on my wall as a kid - a bit unusual for a girl. ;)

But, I understand not being able to watch sports. Like I said, all other sports are very "meh" to watch for me. I'll play them and love them, but not dedicate an evening to watching it.

i think the fact that i have always been sweet at sports was a big reason i started to watch them.

it took me awhile...but i'm starting to care less and less, at least trying, about sports. and when i say sports i mean football. and by football i mean the NFL. everything else is just blah. i used to be a HUGE NBA fan and followed the Knicks consistently. i listened to all their games on 660 AM growing up, despite living in Ohio. i would really be in a sour mood when they lost. eventually, i just stopped watching. i catch some highlights on tv or the internet but that's about it.

now it's the same thing with football. i'm trying to slowly let it go. it just consumes so much of my time and mind on sundays when i could be out actually doing something worth while.

the only sport i think i will continue to watch and follow is tennis. i love the game.

You don't get points by watching sports. You get them by playing them ;)
    NERDS!
  • To the level that some people get into it? No idea... It's a bit strange actually.

I played football and hockey growing up, but never felt that my life would end if I didn't catch a game on the TV, never really felt any urge to find a game if it was on either. I like the hockey playoffs, the closer to the end the better. Could care less about basketball, and baseball, but am not objected to seeing a game live in person, and do enjoy watching live. Soccer holds my attention for about 10 seconds. I fell like I'm getting stupid the longer I stare at the TV.

In a nutshell I have to be really bored to hang out at home with the TV and watch a game these days, unless it's with friends, food and drink, and arranged specifically for that reason.

You're not alone on this one.

edit: I should say I m somewhat addicted to watching all the UFC pay per view events. It's much more personalised, and a shitload more physically demanding than any sport.

i don't watch sports as much as i used to ... but if you play sports - it's good to watch ... also - sports is "generally" drama happening in front of your eyes ... where outcomes are not typically pre-determined ... last second shots ... game changing plays ... it's like watching apollo 13 but you don't know if they survive or not ...

I wouldnt know what to do with myself if I didnt watch sports. I would have way too much time on my hands. Even now when it's not baseball season its tough. You get pretty used to going home and watching a baseball game pretty much every night.
  • I find I only watch the sports I can (or at least used to) play. As a kid, baseball was my life. if I wasn't watching it, I was playing it. I never played organized football, but I played a lot of pickup, and was pretty good. I was never any good at basketball, and hate watching it. I think a whole lot of people watch sports because they bet on it, especially the fantasy aspect of it

I still really enjoy sports, both watching and playing, but I don't do either as much as I once did. Now when I watch sports it's more clinical. I'm at work and I don't care who wins. Tell ya what, though, getting paid to write about sports is pretty damn sweet. Still, I hope to do something more than sports in the future.

Well put. that's the excitement in it. Everyone has expections of what may or might happen for certain matchups but once the game start, anything can happen.

I only have music and sports as my primary entertainment so I would know what to do if I wasn't into sports. There's aren't that many great music nowadays. ;)

    Not. And no comment. ;)

Actually, it seems that a lot of basketball fans aren't really into hockey and vice versa since both sports' seasons run almost the same time of the year.
and given that both leagues play more 80 games, kinda hard to follow both passionately.

not sure how many people follow both leagues regularly.

I follow both but hockey more closely during the season then basketball during the playoffs. Both seasons are BOTH way too LONG especially B-ball.
