I am not a big movie buff, but the Deniro/Pacino poll made me think of this.

He is a great actor but my favourite would have to go to Dustin Hoffman

  • I don't think so BUT... I reckon his performance in the deer hunter MAY possibly be the most haunting I have ever seen. For that one film, yes he was the greatest actor... and yes he is great in other things but he hasn't done a great job of choosing his parts if he wants to be the best :o just my opinion.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable

Like deniro and Pacino, he still always seems to just play... Jack Nicholson though :o

Can you really be the greatest actor alive if you simply act the exact same way in pretty much EVERY film?

  • as far as acting skills would have to go, the answer should be Tom Hanks. I am not really a big fan, but i have seen many movies he was in....and you truly believe that he is the person he is playing. he has to be one of the most versitile actors in history, and he seems to be overlooked by most people (obviously not by the academy).

so its either him or carrot top

Well i dont think he does act the same way in pretty much every film so... yes, i think he's great. :D

    Batman
    The Shining
    As Good As It Gets

Not the same at all to me in the way he acts.

Sure he has the same characteristics in his expressions/delivery but so does every actor.

Different strokes for different folks i suppose.

Good call, he's one of my favourites. I love the comedies he did in the 80's/early 90's and is brilliant in Drama movies too.
  • there's nothing like a Walken soliloquy in a movie

Walken is in Vancouver right now making a movie with Adam Sandler, Tracy Margan, and Tom Arnold. They showed up at the local rock station CFOX and kind of ambushed them in the studio, it was very funny.

Walken is terrible; he has absolutely no range and plays the same character every time.

Death of a Salesman is one performance that would make me lean towards this statement.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I always get confused between the role he played in The Deer hunter and the one he played in Wayne's World 2...

  • well sounds like we're just gonna start calling out all our faves...so I'm saying MORGAN FREEMAN is the best actor ever!

Somebody who gets overlooked a lot in this category of great actors is Robert Redford. He's done some amazing work.

The only time I might consider him "great" is in his breakout role in "The Deer Hunter" and then in some funky movie where he plays a sort of bi-curious mob boss character in a bathrobe making deals with a gun or over the phone half the time. I don't remember the name of that movie.

For his longevity in the business, which is admirable, I don't think he stands out all that much for performance.
