I've got a house partially full of crap, for example every photo I've ever taken since 1992 :( (not organized in albums either -- that's alot of work)

I have a really nice car, I just don't buy one every 2 years. Mine is 5 yrs old.

I'm happy for you then ;)

but I'm not happy for all those unfortunate families facing a foreclosure.

We never upsized when we could...stayed below what we could afford and now the kids are starting to leave home, so I'm sooo happy we spent extra money on fun rather then getting a bigger house with all those extra expenses. Some of our friends even got second homes. Soon as the youngest is out of HS...I'm out of this one, I want smaller on a nice piece of property....3 more years!

Oh and don't even start about the pictures....I have a lot of that kind of crap!

yes, when we got our house we were told we could afford much more of a mortgage than this modest home we live in. It will be paid off when I'm retired but my husband has much longer to work than I do.

I had two drawers filled with pics. I have finally moved them to three large shoe boxes. Nike ;)

I feel sorry for parents spending alot of money on their childrens' jeans. It wasn't that way when I was growing up, jeans were around $20 I guess. Besides, when I was a tween my mom got mad at me and stormed out of a store and told me to pay for my own clothes from now on...

  • Let me tell ya, it's refreshing to see people say that they see the reality of living within their means. I'm one of those "dreaded" mortgage consultants LOL. I'm not the cause of the mortgage meltdown, I don't do subprime, never did. I only do A paper, live in a good area and we don't have many forelosures/short sales. I never felt the need to disclose that until now. Let me also state that I'm proud of my work, I love my job and I hope to retire in this business.

But I've also seen people feel the need to live above their means and I'm the first to say right up front - what you qualify for on paper and what is comfortable in reality are two totally different things. And to some people, that's a shocking statement. A harsh reality. Especially with people my age - around 27-33. Who feel the need to show off (not all, don't get me wrong, I work with MANY level headed clients) or keep up with their peers. I see many clients in the 50's who have NOTHING. No savings, no retirement, no downpayment. And it's sad. But it's been extremely beneficial to me in how I live my life financially.

With that being said, I also have a deep appreciation for quality. I'd much rather spend $200 on a pair of boots I know I will wear for 2 years than spend $50 on a pair that I know won't last a season. I see a rate of return when I purchase anything. Granted, I'm a numbers person and I tend to analyze anything I buy (yes, I'm a real hoot and hollar) but I suppose being in the business you tend to become - not cynical - but appreciative to the long term investment of anything.

why do you care about what other people do? Let people live their own lives. Not everyone's goal is to have a lot of money in the bank. some people like to live and do things with their life besides having a lot of money stored away for a rainy day. Is that wrong? Maybe it is just not your way but doesn't necessarily make those people wrong. Live the life you want to lead but take the consequences as they come.
  • If I get hit by a bus tomorrow, at least I'll look good doing so.

PS. not all people with designer things are living beyond their means.

I don't think young people realize that when you are old and under medicare (with a prescription plan for example), there is a time when prescrips are not covered and you pay retail for prescrips til you meet the threshold. It is called the "dough nut hole" and it is thousands of dollars out of pocket (maybe $3k). I did not know this til my mom and grand ma in law experienced it.

I have a job that pays really well and I buy clothes pretty much once or twice a year.
Outside of work I pretty much live in teeshirts and jeans.

It all comes down to how badly you want to "fit in" and how much your willing to pay I guess.

Status symbols, clothes, cars, houses mean nothing to me. I'd rather spend my hard earned money traveling and seeing the world.
    To each his/her own...
  • my wife would rather have a $40 purse with $300 inside. She would get pissed if I spent $400 on a purse.

I buy things because I want them, not so I can show people what I have.

today my friend was carrying a "knock off" version of a Chanel purse. she paid $30 for it florida. I've seen vendors selling those on the street corner before in Manhattan and DC.

I did not realize that people openly advertise these replicas, online. How can they get away with that, why don't the designers sue? Look:

I'd rather pay a lil more for something real and authentic of higher quality then some cheap knock off that will break or wear out in 2 weeks.

And hopefully your bank where you have all your savings will still be around when you need it.

My mechanic and I were discussing knock offs the other day. He got some snap-on tools flashlights for his employees and they lasted 2 days. So he talks to his snap-on rep and there was no serial number on the lights. I guess all snap-on tools have unique serial numbers. Anyways, looks like they commission these to be made in China and guess what? It's crap.

That is the future of products these days unfortunately.

there are so many dishonest vendors, I hope you get your authentic product.
these fake replicas have fake certificates of authenticity, according to their websites. they should be busted.

in the past, somebody gave me a designer purse. i was reluctant to tell her that it was showing wear and tear after a month....i finally told her. she was pissed off and called the designer and told them. we took it back to the fine dept. store and exchanged it. i can't remember if the exchanged one did not hold up, i think it was fine. how do you know if stores are selling genuine products? btw, my banks will still be there and so will my money that's buried in the ground in the mayonaise jar. money is insured by fdic, remember?

Agreed! I find travel so much more valuable than a purse :o but to each their own... I just can't see how a purse can bring you as much joy as a trip somewhere... and they cost about the same. How many stories or memories can you get from a purse? How many people do you get to meet because of this purse and how many fantastic experiences does it bring you? Can it give you a sun tan??? Can it give you that pure bliss from lying on a beach or seeing the most beautiful scenery or from just having a laugh with friends? Can you find LOVE from a purse???

If the answer to those questions is 'yes', then ok, I see where you're coming from :)
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you
