not really, I'm not into subway sandwiches. however, if an overweight person goes from eating a full course lunch of hamburgers, shakes, and fries and switches to sandwiches, they would lose weight.
come on... that's pretty vague... if someone goes from eating hamburgers, shakes and fries to simply eating hamburgers, they should lose weight still doesn't make it healthy :( although it sounds like MY kinda diet

it's not healthy, but it's cutting back on calories. cutting back 500 calories a days = loosing 1 pound.
I love McDonald's chocolate shakes.

 You have a 21 year old? You couldn't... that woulda made you, what, 6 when you had a kid?
I got fooled by the subway thing too :(
It's all about what you put on it. Don't get it layered with cheese, mayo, fatty meats, white bread, oil and sauces.
If you get a 6-inch sub on whole wheat with no cheese, and fat-free or no dressing, load it with veggies and maybe some turkey, that's one of the healthiest things you can eat, and you will certainly lose weight in the long run w/exercise.
I don't get people who rag on subway because it doesn't lead them to lose weight. If you are smart about what you order, subway has some of the healthiest options going.

a certain relative of mine (by marriage) has an enormous stomach, bigger than a woman about to give birth. he skips breakfast, eats a huge saturated and trans fat filled cupcake with 500 calories and drinks very little water. this is after his heart surgery where he was told to eat healthy, 10 yrs ago.

subway sandwiches? you are supposed to lose weight. must be the cheese?
subway sandwiches don't make you lose weight. no food does. those subway commercials are based on the idea that if you eat total crap, and then you switch to subway, which is relatively better for you, obviously, you will lose weight. Subs by default have sub ROLLS, which are probably the absolute worst thing someone who is watching their weight should eat.

The bottom line on losing weight is to intake less calories than you use. Fat has 9 calories per gram, protein has 4 calories per gram, and carbohydrates also have 4 calories per gram. The rate that people burn calories at rest varies, but usually is at least 1800 calories per day and on average 2000 calories per day. I can't recall the exact figures, but I think somewhere in the range of 3500 calories burnt in excess of intake will shed 1 pound of fat. Therefore, if someone who burns 2000 cals/day only intakes 1500 cals/day, it would take them 1 week to shed 1 pound. Exercise, of course, increases the calories burnt and allows for more intake while still shedding pounds, or in conjunction with a lower intake, shedding pounds faster. It's probably not a good idea to skimp on intake when you start a regular exercise program though. The roll on that Subway sandwich probably has the fewest calories than any of the other components (aside from the veggies) due to the fact that the meats and cheeses etc, all have calories from fat.
Atkins type diets work in the short term, but are very bad for your health. Cutting fats, choosing higher fiber carbs that aren't taken up in the colon and converted to sugar by the liver is the best. Avoid fruit juices as much as your common sense would tell you to avoid soda pop and other concentrated sweets.. Eat fruit instead of drinking the juices. This way you get the fiber from the fruit as well and far less sugar (which is carb). Snack on fresh veggies and high fiber carbs. Choose high fiber pastas and whole grains instead of processed carbs. You WILL lose weight if you eat right, slowly, which is the best way.
And seeing as this is a thread about beer guts, beer is high in calories and does not provide a high level of essential nutrients.
An average (ordinary, not microbrew) 12oz beer has the following:
Calories: 153
Protein: 1.64 g
Carbohydrates: 12.64 g
Fiber: 0 g
Total Fat: 0 g
The bottom line on losing weight is to intake less calories than you use.
that is somewhat true, and probably true for most people. The bottom line is more that all science knows *for sure* at this point that energy in< energy out-> weight loss, in most cases. However, this is true for everyone and recent science has been investigating this more and more. Individual bodies can use and store different nutrients in different ways. There is this one doctor who was stumped when the conventional wisdom of energy in/energy out didn't work for one subject. He has been investigating the role of difference in stomach flora in processing food, which I think is *really* cool and interesting.
actually as an aside I was at my doctor a couple weeks ago and she was like "energy out should be > energy in" and I was like "I don't believe that's all there is to it." and she was like "I don't either. No one does. But the fact is that right now science doesn't have nearly enough information for a doctor to accurately say anything else."
also, even if one is just focusing on lower calorie intake, you also have to practice healthy habits and eat efficient and nutritious food. You can't just say eat a huge 1500 calorie meal once a day. that would probably make most people enormously fat. You kind of need to train your metabolism the right way.
Also, I think for someone who exercises intensely every day, if you go from 2000- 1500 calories/day it would most likely result in losing more than 1 lb per week. I know the math doesn't add up, but it's a hunch based on experience. of course, who knows. the past 2 months I've been eating 1000-1500 calories/ day and I've been *starving* (I am way above average in terms of activity level) but I gained 2 lbs.
I began to get a gut last summer from increased subway consumption coupled with lack of exercise. I think my alcohol consumption stayed about the same.
Thankfully, the beginnings of that gut are now completely gone, mainly thanks to exercising again. It's all about the exercise people. Besides the subway lunches my diet was pretty good.
OH I thought you meant you rode the subway rather walking.
Heeheee you mean if I eat a foot-long meatball sub with chips (crisps) and a cookie and large soda 3 times a day I'm not going to lose weight?
Good for you Neil for getting back in the exercise habit! You'll be beach ready for San Diego *wolf whistles*
