I know there are a lot of you on here, so hopefully someone can help:

My husband and I are going to be in NY during the last week of May (planned way before the PJ announcement, can't change our plans now,) and are renting an apartment on 42nd st, between 8th and 9th. Are there any good bakeries close to there where we can get our breakfast before we head out for the day?

Also, looking at a map, it seems reasonable for us to walk from the apartment to MoMA, or to the Empire State Building. Is it?

Thanks. If anyone's visiting the Vancouver area, I'd be happy to provide whatever advice/info I can.

Hey that's right where I stayed when I was there in October...the Westin at Times Square. I know you asked "the locals" for advice on bakeries, but I thought I'd share. There was a really good little French bakery/coffee shop literally in the same building as the Westin. DELICIOUS muffins and coffee. Crap, I forgot the name...but it's right there.

thanks! if it's in the same building at the Westin I should be able to track it down, i'm pretty good at reading signs!

were you doing the touristy thing when you were there? did you try to walk from your hotel to MoMA or anywhere about that distance away? how long did it take?

that's definitely walkable. the musuem of modern art is at 52nd between fifth and sixth. if it's raining when you go and you don't want to walk, take the E train from Times Square to the fifth avenue stop at E. 53rd.

Yup, there strictly as a tourist. FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CITY!!!!!!! I couldn't wait to go back. In fact, I planned to visit in June when I will have a week off work (I'm a nanny) and it just so happened that PJ will be in Camden at that time...so I get two of my favorite things...NYC and PJ!

I'm sorry, I don't know what MoMA is. I walked ALOT though. Pretty much everywhere I went.

i hope it's not raining, but i'm from vancouver, so it wouldn't be a big deal, i guess.

    thanks for the info!

MoMA = museum of modern art. (i know there's some people on here that are anti-modern art, but i'm pretty sure there's some good stuff there.)

if you like to walk, then you can definitely walk to any place between 34th and 59th-which covers the empire state building to the central park entrance

but us NYers walk a lot, so while Id think nothing of walking from 51st and 2nd to 34th and 8th, you might not feel the same.

EDIT and I believe MOMA has its own little cafe in the courtyard. Not 100% sure though.

Not anywhere near your apartmentt, but you must go to Veniero's bakery in the East Village! Italian bakery that has been around for 100 years! I learned about it from someone on here and have to stay away to avoid putting on the weight I worked so hard to take off. Best Cheesecake and cannolis in the city! (If anyone says Juniors is better they can suck it!) ;)http://www.venierospastry.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=V

Hey, anyone know of a good Irish pub in the times square area? I'm staying here and want to know of some good grub and brewskies right in that vicinity. (I didn't get a chance to find one when I was there in October.)

MMMMMMM... Not near anywhere I'd planned on going, but I might have to make a special detour.

    Veniero's bakery 11th street-Mooks suggestion-I agree
Although a place called Eileens used to make my favorite cheesecake-not sure if they are still around or not.
bring some of those cookies back home!

And that neighborhood also has some of the best casual Japanese food in the city.

You'll be pretty close to one of the best bakeries in the city: Sullivan street bakery. Used to be in the village, is now on 47th between 10th and 11th. Best focaccia in town. In general, that's a very good area for food.

    Have fun!

I'm co-signing on Veniero's, those Cannolis are out of this world, esp. the Chocolate ones

but Junior's is also fantastic. They opened a restaurant on West 45th btwn Bdwy and 8th

and in Grand Central station they have one in the food court and a smaller one on the main level where they have these super ginormous cupcakes that are incredible. And I think there's a Zabar's in Grand Central also.

AC-Milford Plaza is an instituition. (I mean a legendary place). They used to have a commercial about it on tv in the 70's.

    MoMA is FANTASTIC!!!
it is one of my MOST fave art museums in the WORLD....and i've been to LOTS...in lots of different countries. i am a HUGE modern art fan, and MoMA has a simply brilliant collection, fantastic changing exhibitions and their photography collection - which is of particular interest to me - is superb!

it IS really pricey admission, i think $20 a person b/c it is privately funded, same with the guggenheim i believe. BOTH truly are worth it tho!

    ENJOY!

I'd think so. I got that for when I went to San Francisco and it included a three-hour tour on one of those gray line buses.
