My car is undrivable - blowing smoke like crazy out of the exhaust - mechanic just called me and said it is my turbo leaking oil. I have to bring it to the dealership. He won't touch it. Only 53,000 miles.....and warranty expired at 50k. This is going to be a fortune and I am so poor right now :(

anyone have a clue what the cost of this may be? my mechanic couldn't even venture a guess.

Let me guess, you have a Dodge Neon?? They are notorious for crappingout after the warranty expires.
I am so sorry to hear that girl. :(

    sorry to hear that!
Are you sure that this didnt happen when you were backing up and you dinged the wall? Are you sure, cause if it did, you could claim it under your collision ins.

bummer doll, sorry to hear that
  • Amazing how they program the car to crap outr right after the warranty expires. Mine had 2 major problems at 49,000 miles, w/ a 48,000 mile warranty. Luckily, my cousin works for a GM dealership, and knew my problems were covered up to 60,000 miles, which the dealership where I bought my car did not tell me.

ha. ohhhh I never think like that. don;t think that would effect the turbo. going 120 effects the turbo - I drive fast but not that fast!

I actually did hit a wall when backing up 2 years ago!

if it's just the turbo that has a problem and nothing else, you might be looking and some different solutions. the most probable (from what you're saying) is that the turbo cracked. that's never good, so the dealership could either A) tell you that you need to buy a new turbo or B) they MIGHT be able to seal it.

now I don't know what type of turbo that car might come with, but regardless you're going to the stealership so it'll probably be expensive.

unfortunately I'm not sure if part B is even possible. turbo's deal with so much force and spin at such high rpm's that I don't know if a sealer could help that.

hopefully that's your only problem. good luck, let us know.

they just told me it should be over $2,000.00. I am doomed.

They say it is usually a result of the wrong type of oil being put in for oil changes. That a turbo compatible oil should be used and if it's not...and regular oil is used...well this is what happens. I hate going to the dealership b/c they overcharge and I am there FOREVER. Little did I know that having my oil changed at Mobil would cost me $2 grand.

    :(

of course, you are the car expert
    ;)

and pulling this off would depend on having a good relationship with your agent

Mine is fantastic and would find a way to put that claim in!

    2 grand!!!!!! wow, i'm sorry....that's blows....:(

however although i know shit about cars, that wrong oil excuse sounds like bullshit to me.....it sounds like dealership crap to me....

I called my mechanic and am waiting for him to call me back. He is a freind of mine so he wouldn't screw me intentionally - maybe he didn't know?!?!? but it sounds like a crazy excuse - one maybe he could verify.

People bitch and moan about dealerships being expensive, but there are ENDLESS stories of Mobil/Goodyear/Jiffy Lube/etc. doing very poor work on vehicles. You get what you pay for. Your dealer would have known to use the right oil.

It sucks that you're stuck with this repair now, especially because it seems like Mobil dropped the ball. Hope everything works out for you!

Get a Toyota or Honda.

I've been driving a 1998 Toyota Camry since 2001 and still working good. Same goes for the '94 Toyota Corolla as well. Japanese is the way to go with automobiles!

I think every car is notorious for crapping out after the warranty expires. I paid off my car at the same time the warranty expired, and at that very moment, everything went to hell in a hand basket.

I hear you, but when your mechanic is your friend who works at Mobil I wouldn't expect poor work. Before I went to him I ALWAYS went to the dealership - but have had my share of problems with them as well.

    here is some info:

On Saab 9-5 and 9-3 models years 99-03 Saab is suggesting a PCV(Posite Crankcase Ventilation) upgrade. If you are having troubles with oil leaks and/or oil backing up into your turbo causing smoke to billow out of your exhaust pipe this may be what your Saab needs. Regardless of your year or model if you have an oil leak you should check the function of your PCV system. This can be done by checking that all hoses and passages are clear and that the check valve still works as a one way valve.

i feel bad for you...$2,000 is a ton of money...

    but i have to ask....

when YOU bought the car.....didnt you READ the owners manual???

im thinking that would be one of the FIRST things you would look in to..

WHAT TYPE OF OIL DO I PUT IN MY CAR????

if i am taking my car to a gas station for an oil change....I TELL THEM what type of oil i want...

    THEY DO NOT TELL ME.......
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....

I am a girl :) I thought my mechanic would know...he knows that the coolant is specific for a Saab, I assume he knows about oil. And I have yet to hear he used the wrong oil...that is what the dealership is saying.
