On a related question why is it called a pocket BOOK? doesn't make sense but a lot of people say it
Trace the etymology of pocketbook and you'll find that pocketbooks were originally book-like cases used for carrying papers. Over time, people began to use them to carry more than just papers and it changed from a case-like structure to more of a bag, but the phrase stuck and is now synonomous with purse.

I have to say, normally I don't carry a bag. I'm one of those weird women who, if going out anywhere other than work, carries everything in their pockets :o

I DO need to get a bag to take everywhere with me really, but i'm not into big bulky handbag numbers... all a bit too erm... 'girly' for me :o

Same thing here. I need a bag, but I can not seem to find one that suits me! Drives me mad. The regular once tend to for some reason have gold or silver lockets and stuff on them is just not my thing. Tried it once, and all of my friends almost fell of their chairs laughing. I'm a student so my laptop is with me everywhere I go monday - friday and I use that bag to carry my books with me etc. That one contains:

    Laptop
Various books, both for class and whatever book I'm reading atm
    Cigarettes
    WATER
    Cellphone
Something to write on and with
    Keys
Bank card, student card, money, coffee card, subway ticket etc (wallet is obviously not working for me)
    Headphones
    Painkillers
    Sunglasses
    Cd's
Newspaper for the day to read on the subway
Lunch packet in plastic (which seems to enjoy itself at the very bottom so the bread is all crushed to pieces when it's time to eat it.)

    Wow, no wonder it's heavy.

so to sum it up, it was odd to have a full roll of toilet paper in her bag!!! I couldnt stop laughing when she pulled that out!

I don't carry one. Well, I carried one on the way to Aruba as my carry-on. It had my wallet, passport, phone, a pen, a book (Into the Wild) and lip moisturizer in it. Otherwise, I carry my wallet. Even then, when I'm out, I only bring my license, debit card, cash and my car key. I can't stand carrying a purse with me. If I carry one, I find more shit I don't need to put in it.
believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

I don't hit on women with pocketbooks, purses, or any kind of bag as that only increases my chances of being maced.

in my "real" purse, i.e., pocketbook, I could save the world of small crisis'. At any random time, I may have a various amount of colored pens, receipts for anything from BK to something worth saving them for. Gum wrappers, gum wrapped in receipts, (!), my daughter's barrettes, my son's (taken away) lazer pointers, a toy airplane, a letter I began to write in venom, a calendar that just makes me look efficient; I never look at the thing really, a checkbook; a tinkerbell one at that!, but zero balance most of the time....keys, brochures, buttons, feminine stuff, lip gloss, lipstick, gum, scraps of paper for my adhd moments when I get this "GREAT" idea that I am afraid I will forget............buttons sometimes, scissors, (if I was gardening and forgot to put them in the house when done), and my cell phone.

Now, when I went to court last week, I took 2 purses; one was in the car;the real purse, and the other was like a toy little purse, pink to match my shirt, that had only my car keys, one lip gloss and my telephone and court papers.

    I felt so light.
But back to the bottomless pit.

I guess I always like to be prepared.

Ok thanks. They're not purses either. Here a purse is what a lady puts inside her handbag and it holds her money, cards etc. :)
