How far do you travel to work???

I have a job interview tomorrow thats 29 miles from my home. My current job is only one mile away. I live in the city.

I have no desire to leave the city. I freaking love it here!.. The job however is a much greater opportunity if I were to get it, but part of me wants to stay at my current shitty job because of location.

I guess its a win/loose situation... 29 miles against the flow of traffic can't be that bad can it? I used to travel 24 miles to work.

***UPDATE***

Well, it looks like I got the job, which is awesome! I hung out with my friend tonight, who conveniently is my new boss and gave me the news..

I just drove back from his place which is right by the new job. Without traffic and me driving 5 over the speed limit it takes exactly 35 minutes to go the 29 miles, which isn't bad at all and hopefully will stay that way with me driving the opposite way of rush hour.

I think I might take the chance and renew my lease in the city. It's been too much fun here. Would probably be worth the headache of traffic..

Thats a pretty light commute for long islanders into Manhattan. And at least you got reverse commute. You'd be crazy to pass it up.

  • According to Google maps, I live about 4 miles from where I work/school.

EDIT: Does the Metra go there? At least it's not driving.

29 miles driving, or on public transport. I don't know how many miles I travel, but it takes 45 minutes on 2 subway trains, and a bit of a walk.

32 miles round trip and i have to pass the Vice President's Naval Observatory home twice. It get's when he's on the road clogging up traffic with his 21-22 car motorcade. Which takes about 1:45 mins round trip

Well, starting pay is only 3 G's more than I'm getting a year now, but I'm pretty much capped out at my current job.

Against traffic, it will be about a 45 minute commute.. I should have probably posted this after I know they want me or not.. my best friend would be my manager, but he's not interviewing me. I guess my chances are pretty good. I just want to be prepared.

I say move if you can.

It's true that 45 min each way is becoming the norm, but I think that kind of a commute will eventually take its toll on your personality. Every day you'll be showing up to work feeling like, "Fuck I hate traffic." That's just hard.

My commute is 7 miles to the office, but I sometimes have to travel an hour or so to visit clients, but that's OK because I get reimbursed for that shit.

Moving from one of the greatest cities in the world, to one of the most boring suburbs in the world?

I can move, but do I want to.

are you driving the same route for the interview? Maybe you will know how you feel after you take a 'test run?'

I drive the same route once a week to my parents, and used to commute 24 of those 29 miles to the job I'm at now,.. so yes, I'm well familiar. :)

45 minutes smooth traveling for the most part, but can be a pain. Took me 3 1/2 hours once to get home in a snowstorm..

I guess it might be worth it knowing my commute sucks, but I get to go home to an awesome city.

If it ends up being a Mon. through Friday job, It may be worth it to be in the city on weekends.

With gas prices these days and with the extra wear and tear on your vehicle, you might not see much of that extra $3K/yr in the end. If prospects are high for eventual promotion, then I can see it being worth it I guess. That is if you are truly without other options.

20 feet from the bedroom to the office at home. Rush hour is about 8.15 when all the girls are in and out of the bathroom.

66k? A long way. Working at home has it's ups and downs but i wouldn't go back to the 30 minute drive I used to have. With fuel prices as they are in the UK I'm saving a fortune. :)

    0.8 miles.

I can leave work and be at home in under 5 minutes.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
  • Just over 20 miles, I have about a 30 min walk and a train journey.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
  • I've got 2 offices I work at. The main office is 72 miles, one way, from my house. The other is only 21 miles, but it's in the middle of the city, so it takes me just as long to get to that one as it does driving the 72 miles.

The times I'm on the road though make it not so bad. I get up at 3:30am and am out the door by 4:00am to be at work for 5:00am. I actually love the drive to work. No traffic, still night time outside, and it's like I'm the only car on the road. I just jam the stereo and rock out for an hour.

3 days/week: @15 miles or ~1 hour one way. 10 minute drive to train, 35 minute train ride, 5 min walk.

2 days/week: 3 seconds. work from home and move from the bedroom to living room and turn my computer on.

i keep thinking about switching jobs but giving up the work from home option will be REALLY tough.

I drive about 20 miles to get to the office. It usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes to get there, depending on the traffic and weather.
