Nixon in Detroit wrote:Thank you sir! I just read your signature. I was at that show I had the signs that said let stone sing!!!! That setlist was absolutely killer!!!!!!!!
Ed: "1, 2, 3, 4, 2,..." (Stone started strumming JUST a little too early, stops himself, Ed laughs, crowd cheers),...
Ed: "Stone Gossard, everybody, right here...there's two people, ah, standing over here with "Let Stone Sing Songs" Signs (crowd cheers, Stone noodlepicks on his acoustic),...
(crowd up front starts the chant, "Let Stone Sing,..."
Ed: "Let Stone Sing a Song is the sign",... (dumbfounded)
the crowd cheer picks up steam, Stone still noodlepicking, likely embarrassed,...Matt then joins Stone with a little high-hat groove as he's picked up on the cheer,...Ed has also now picked up on it, and repeats it in amazement "Let Stone Sing,..."
Jeff joins in on the groove, then Matt kicks it up a notch with the cowbell, Ed strums a note, and we have ourselves a funky little groove inspired by the chant.
quick jam ends. crowd cheers.
Ed: "No, he shall never sing! (crowd laughs),...He shall never sing! He shant be singing! (crowd boo's),...Not only will he not be singing, but he'll be kissing fish! Where's the fish to kiss? (side note: the practice of kissing fish in Newfoundland, known as "screeching") I think we've been had! (Ed giggles),...What? You think that actually somebody's not letting him sing, is that the connotation of that sign? (Stone noodlepicks) Stone Gossard can sing anytime he wants, at any time, on this stage, on any stage really (crowd cheers),...He chooses not to, and he's waiting to find a worthy audience apparently (crowd boo's),...
Stone: "Actually, what I've always wanted to do is dance, so, (crowd cheers) tonight I'm going to perform later, ah, after the show for an hour, so (Ed starts strumming a little groove for Stone to dance to), everyone stick around, it's gonna be fuckin' kick-ass, for sure! (the rest of the band joins in and Stone can't resist!)
To quote the 10C from Newsletter #8: "Please understand we have a lot of members and it is very hard to please everybody. If you are one of those unhappy people...please call 1-900-IDN-TCAR."
"Me knowing the truth, I can not concur."

bump for Nixon, along with my Out of my Mind story........
I first heard this song a couple months after the single release, probably mid-95.? And the story goes like this...
I was 16 or so, well into being a complete PJ freak, scooping up every little bit of info available, from bootlegs (when they were still unofficial, and cost a crap load of money) to articles, to radio broadcasts (Atlanta 94 is still a Holy Grail). So my family and me were driving up to visit some relatives, and since this thread has a bunch of Michigan people in it, i can say that i was going from south of Detroit up to Bay City.
So upon arriving, me and my cousin, also 16, also somewhat of a PJ fan, take off to go play some pool, escape the adults, and act cool, being 16 and all. At the pool hall, i'm searching the juke box, and i come across a PJ cd i've never seen before, which, upon closer examination, has a SONG that I've never heard before!! Of course this song is Out of my Mind. At this point i start thinking it's pretty weird to have driven three and hours to get to a little random pool hall to find this song. But the really weird part happened next.
So i pop in my quarter or whatever pick a few songs, including "Mind", and play some pool. "Mind" starts up at some point, and i'm listening, grooving along, taking it in. Ed is repeating, "out of my mind...out of my mind....". Then at some point i realize, the cd is skipping. Perfectly, over and over, "out of my mind..... out of my mindddd...... out of my mind......" Sort of one of those weird vertigo moments, where the world turns in on you. Made the song refrain seem to take on some bigger, twisted, much more literal meaning. Had to finally unplug the machine, after about 5 full minutes of it.
When my head cleared, i felt cheated, like any good PJ fan would, because i realized i still didn't know how the song actually ended. Took me three stupid years to find the bootleg cd.
cool, huh?? no??
ah well, cheers
