I thought this might be the place to ask, so here it goes:
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep a dog out of the litter box? I keep finding it with the lid completely removed, and I'm pretty sure it's not the cat.
I've considered putting a small "doggy door" kind of thing on the door to the room where the litter box is located for the cat, but I do not own the place where I live so I don't want to go to the trouble of rigging a door.
I don't want to keep our cat locked in a room all day with his poop palace just to keep Zeke from getting into it.
Right now, my best idea is to put a litter box together out of one of those Rubbermaid storage totes and cut a hole in the lid on top. I think the cat could still get in and out, and Zeke wouldn't be able to get his mischevious snout in there.
So, pet owners... got any other suggestions?
May I ask what you feed your cat?
Bugsy had this problem when he was young...
Eating his own poo while crated and from the cat box
The teacher of our obedience class mentioned byproducts being in the food
(this was years before all the dog food recalls and everything... we were uninformed in the pet food department then)
Start looking at the ingredients, first thing is by-products. (Purina, Eukenuba, Science Diet.... all the "good brands" that the vets give you, sell and promote :fp: )
Apparently, something in the byproducts makes their waste still smell like good food to them.
Not to mention its just gross, the idea of byproducts in food...
There are tons of natural food brand options out there now. Im a big fan of Wellness and recently switched both the dog and cat to Blue Buffalo because its a little cheaper. Just read the labels. Byproducts are bad.
Your dog may have formed some sort of a "habit" out of this, and he may still try to go for it in the beginning... Any way you could put up a baby gate or something to the room where the litter box is for a while? Kitty could jump the gate...Zeke, maybe not so much...
Another thing I was told, but was reluctant to do myself...
Apparently you can buy liquid MSG in the supermarket.
If you add a few drops to the cat food, its supposed to neutralize the smell of their poo.
I dont like the idea of MSG in people food (just like byproducts) so wasnt so keen on giving it to my cat, even though I was told it was harmless.
Good luck.

Both our dog and cat eat Blue Buffalo food. Good stuff. When I worked at a PetSmart (specifically in the Pet Hotel there) I attended a seminar about dog foods and the quality of them. It's insane to know what goes into the cheap stuff like Ol' Roy, Pedigree, etc. It's worth it to buy your animals good, quality food. Anyway, I think we fixed the problem by simpling turning the litter box around towards the wall but with enough room for the cat to get in, but not enough room for Zeke to stick his head in the opening.
Too easy.
If it ends up failing though, I'm going for the baby gate idea.

It amazes me how many people are uninformed still about what they feed their pets.
Im ashamed it took me the first 2 years of Bugsy's life to figure it out...
He's going to be 9 in September and he's the healthiest/most active dog out of any of my friends or families pets who are close in age. It is for sure due to the food he eats.
Guess Zeke was just a little bored... :x

Here's a recent photo of Layla. She's basically an inside dog now. I'm definitely going to start doing loose leash obedience training courses with her soon, since her Husky instinct for pulling things also includes me during walks. She's been a fantastic house dog though. She's my Velcro dog for sure!

SAMSON the collie is finding his feet - and at $2000 a foot, he can't afford to lose them.
For the first time in three years his unique paw prints have joined others on Victoria's Wild Dog Beach.
"C'mon wonder dog," owner Adrian Healey calls as Samson, part pooch, part prosthetic, ambles along, tail wagging. Then seven-year-old Samson plonks himself down expecting to be carried - force of habit.
On Tuesday, Samson came home from the vet with new, designer front feet.
Other Aussie dogs have the odd plastic leg, but the collie is believed to be the first with a pair - front ones - custom-made in the US.
"You can tell his joy. His persona's changed. As soon as he gets his legs on, he starts smiling," Mr Healey said.
"Samson has just realised he can get around again."
Mr Healey and partner Lisa bought Samson as a pup. That was the cheap bit.
Putting new feet on him will end up costing thousands, but Lisa said: "When you love your dog, I think it's worth it."
Mr Healey agreed: "Samson's a beautiful dog. He's just had hard luck."
Three years ago the dog's wrists started to fail. An operation to fuse one sparked a rare reaction and ended in amputation. Then, despite the odds, the other went the same way. Fighting infection sent his kidneys into meltdown.
Samson was on his last legs, any way you looked at it.
"He had complete renal failure. We spoke to (vet Dr David Broomfield) and he said 'this is it'," Mr Healey said.
"I set up a tent in our garden and slept in there with Samson, trying to give him as much love as I could."
The collie hung on. The needle was put off for a week, then a month. With Samson going nowhere, Dr Broomfield made some temporary splints, then took a prosthetics course.
"They've made these legs to fit his stumps perfectly," Mr Healey said.
"They help him walk naturally. Eventually, hopefully, he will be able to run."
