ha....nice
how did i miss this thread before!?!
nice one, stickfig13. i'll be cheering for her on the 4th against keely kobald!
i didn't realize who the guests were for this week's episode. i'll check this one out for sure, leafs.
pretty high profile panel. just did a quick search and saw some stills...gina looks to be in much better shape then her previous appearance. looks like she's got more time for her training for this match than she had for the last one against kaitlin young.
here it is...

I usually hate to see the women fight, but I don't mind watching her mash people up like she did in the last fight.
Maybe she will actually make weight....Hasn't she never made weight?
it's certainly been an issue throughout her career. apparently she had trouble making weight throughout her muay thai career as well, but i'm not positive on the number she missed.
in her mma career, she's missed weight on three of her six matches. in her first match vs. leiticia pestova, she made weight. her second match was against rosi sextion, who is much smaller than her. gina missed that 135 limit by a few pounds. she was on weight again for her third match vs. elaina maxwell. her fourth match was against julie kedzie...this time at 140. gina weighed in at 1/4 pound over with clothes on. kedzie stopped officials when it looked like gina would have to disrobe, saying that she wasn't going to make her do that as it was obvious gina had made the weight.
the worst cut physically, for her, was her next match against tonya evinger. she loked like death after the weight cut and missed by a tenth of a pound. she then drank fluids before officials had time to discuss whether or not gina would have extra time to cut the .1, so evinger accepted the bout anyway.
the 3.5 pounds she was over against kaitlin young was probably the most high-profile miss, because it was on cbs, and because it was 3.5 pounds. she paid the penalty to kaitlin of purse percentage rather than try to cut the 3.5 in the hour that may have been given by officials.
so we will see if they have this bout at 140 or 145. personally, i'd like to see them follow the 135 and 145 divisions, but there aren't a whole lot of female mixed martial artists of quality competing at 145 yet. most are kind of forced to move up to 135 or try to get down to it.
anyway, i hope she's gotten around the weight cut problems. it would certainly cause her significantly less grief if she were more professional about that, and it would be the right fit for her at 145. in any case, she should be making weight. it's part of the job.
I think it's really disrespectful for her to miss weight that many times....Especially within pounds. It's not like she missed the weights by 10-15 pounds.
Her opponents probably took the fights because they wouldnt get paid otherwise.
I understand that the women use a "catch weight"...?
yeah, it's certainly disrespectful, especially when the oppnent has put in the work to make weight. common courtesy would say that you should put in the same work.
you're right that the opponents aren't going to say no to the fight, which puts them in an awkward position. they would still get paid if they decided to not to fight, but that would mean giving up months of training and an opportunity to get a high profile fight...something most female mixed martial artists don't get the opportunity to do enough. a couple of elite xc shows ago nick diaz missed weight by 8 pounds and his opponent took the fight anyway. nick's last opponent made it clear before the fight that he wouldn't take it if nick didn't make weight. fortunately he did make the weight and it wasn't an issue.
the catch weight does come up sometimes in women's mma, especially if it's a case like the ones with gina missing weight. the bout then becomes a catch weight at whatever the heavier fighter weighed in at. also, 135 is the "standard" for women so a lot of women are "expected" to compete there, but it's obviously not possible for everyone.
there have been lots of catch weight matches in men's mma as well...fairly recent ones i can think of would be matches like matt hughes vs. thiago alves, travis lutter vs. anderson silva, matt hughes vs. royce gracie, and the nick diaz vs. muhsin corbbrey match i mentioned before. it happens a lot when a fighter is needed as a last minute replacement and is unable to make a standard weight. sorry if i'm just typing what you already know.
are you planning to check out gina's next fight on the 4th of october, stickfig13?
I will watch her fight, but I can't stand the circus that is Elite XC.
BTW....I hate both of the Diaz brothers!
nick and nate, love them or hate them i guess! seems to be no middle ground. haha
yeah, it does seem to be a bit of a circus at times, eh? i've seen quite a few good matches in elitexc, but then there are the clearly one-sided matches and lack of promotion of their really talented fighters. it seems like they've decided to put all stock into one or two fighters in most weight classes and then just have people come in for one fight for them.
i'm looking forward to the card on the fourth. i'm hoping they will have time to show cristiane santos' match vs. yoko takahashi. if all goes as "planned", she wins and gina beats kelly to set up a match between the two. jake sheilds vs. paul daley should be an interesting contrast of styles and benji radach vs. ninja is also a solid match.
kimbo vs. shamrock, on the other hand...:D oh well, if it gets people to tune in to watch the other matches...
sorry to get off topic...
now, back to gina!
nah nate and nick are awsome... been a fan of nick's for a long time and actually am more of a fan of nate now.
They're both pretty nuts and stupid at times, but they are great fighters and i guess i like their attitude.

it's never a bad thing to see gina, eh? :D
she was on MMWweekly radio last night, and it sounds like she's in a good place right now and ready. she'll need to be, as kelly is tough. anyone who gives tara larosa a battle is a tough test! her stand up is really bad, though, so if gina can keep this on her feet she should have a showcase night.
a little write up from the interview...
NO DISTRACTIONS, GINA CARANO FOCUSED ON FIGHT
Thursday, September 25, 2008
by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
The life of a mixed martial arts fighter has changed dramatically since the sports’ inception some years ago. From movie roles to commercials to photo shoots to interviews, the daily routine for a fighter is anything but routine these days and no one knows that better than Elite XC women’s star, Gina Carano.
As a part of the first main stage women’s fight during the Elite XC inaugural show, Carano proved that female fighting can be just as exciting and tough as what the men do.
She also opened up a giant door for more opportunities as soon after her fighting career took off, including her current 2nd job as “Crush” on American Gladiators.
Carano admits that her new found fame and lifestyle are a big switch, but when given the chance to reach out to new avenues in life, who wouldn’t take the job?
“Anybody who gets a good opportunity would take it,” said Carano in a recent interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “I get a lot of flack from people who are like ‘oh she’s not serious about fighting’ and that’s not it at all. I’m just open minded. I’m not just a fighter, like I’m not just a female. I’m a bunch of things, I have a lot of interests.”
The new job at American Gladiators, combined with interviews and other job opportunities have forced Carano to get the right people working on her behalf and staying focused on making it to the top of her chose sport of MMA.
“I’m really looking forward to after this fight just sticking to a routine and a program,” commented Carano. “I’m just getting a handle on it, I think that’s why I’ve slipped up in certain areas, missing weight, I’ve been all over the place, cause I didn’t have any stability or anything.”
The stability has come in the form of a full training camp, something she didn’t have for her last fight in Elite XC against Kaitlin Young. Never one to make excuses, Carano is happy to have her focus back on fighting.
“I’m going to say that just in the last two months have I calmed down and started living normally and training normally,” she stated. “I’m really liking just going in the gym, training for a fight. Cause I’ve been completely like chaos for the last year it seems like or even longer. I’ve been all over the place.”
Having better people to surround her for business and promotion has freed Carano up to work solely on her fight skills while not missing a step on other projects either.
“I’m going to be a better fighter for it,” Carano said of the recent changes in her professional life.
Ultimately, Carano can be whatever she wants to be because she is simply that talented, and she’s enjoying the life she’s led so far.
“I’ve been having a lot of fun with my life. I’m 26 years old and I’ve just had a good experience so far you know?”

Mmmmmm what I would do to those cankles...
The ONLY thing better than a glass of beer is tea with Miss McGill
A protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers
How about a rear-naked-choke ?

That or being caught naked in her full guard.
