Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you one of the more conservatve folks who posts in the MT section? I'm too lazy to go look. If so, that might explain why it doesn't seem like a big deal to you or your family. I know how Utah feels to me and I certainly don't belong there. Then again, I'm kind of a hooligan. But I'm glad you like it.
No, dude, not at all. I'm the anti-Acoustic Guy . I'm a liberal, atheist, beer-drinking Pearl Jam fan. Provo is a creepy hell. Salt Lake actually strikes me as kind of progressive. SLC is less than 50% LDS and it seems like the non-Mormons are more free spirited than most "average people" in most "average" cities. There's all types of folks in SLC. I'm heading up next weekend for the Utah vs. BYU "Holy War." I'll be one of the rum drinkers talking shit to the returned missionaries.

Ha! I lied. I actually graduated in '05 due to the early problems at Joe's. I'm sure there was a good chance we did, as I lived there until early 2007. And while I was in school I lived next door to 15 North(27 steps from my front door to the bar's first step - yes, I've counted them). To say I was a regular is an understatement - and I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing either.

Alright then. Sounds like we'd get along. Have you ever been in downtown SLC on a Sunday morning. It's like the opening scene in 28 Days Later when he wakes up and wanders around the deserted city. Funny though, even the skaters seemed polite.
Oh, and go BYU. Only because Utah losing helps my BSU Broncos. I can honestly say, I've never rooted for BYU before.

Yeah, right upstairs next to the fish market, which is now a sweet italian restaurant. Yeah, we had a lot of random people wander into our place late night.

When I lived in my sorority's house (I was only in it for a year, and it was horrible, don't throw stone at me please!!) I lived on the top floor and the fire escape went to my room and we had to leave the little window open so we didn't suffocate up there. Well one morning I woke up and some random guy was asleep on the floor of my room. He had wandered into my house via the fire escape totally wasted and passed out! So random, and so scary!
The University of Utah is a great school. I didn't go there, but lived near it and had many friends go there. The scene at the University of Utah is Mormons and Skier/Snowboarders. I fit in with the latter scene.
The alcohol laws are weird, but not as bad as it's made to be. You can get real beer at the liquor store and at the bar. If you want to drink real beer at the bar you have to order it by the bottle unless you're drinking at the brewery where they can server the strong stuff.
The "U" is a very good medical school though. Salt Lake is actually very fun and it's only as religious as you make it out to be.

Sunday mornings are funny.
You can walk down the middle of main street and you're all alone.
Nothing against Utah personally, but why would anyone actually choose to live there?
Among other things, I hear that breweries have to make a separate beer specifically for Utah because their laws mandate that beers sold in the state have to be at a lower alcohol content than everywhere else in the U.S.
Any truth to that?
That would be no fun at all! LOL! I'm a Colorado native, and our beer is great! Come to CU or CSU, and have a real beer! LOL!
he will HATE utah.....tell him to go colorado if boarding is that important to him.....the utah slopes are a short drive away
If he's big into Snowboarding he'll definitely want to either be in Salt Lake or Portland, judging by the schools that he picked.
Salt Lake has every thing so close by. I'd wake up at 8:20 be on the chair by 9:00 am. Then in the afternoon, I'd golf and have a BBQ. The snow is amazing and it never rains in Utah.
If I didn't have a better job offer and so many friends back in Portland, I might have stayed there like many of my other friends did. Plus it's a quick little mission to Nevada if you ever need any real Sinning

Let me clarify. Utah is not my cup of tea. However, my little brother has it SET in his head that he wants to go there for college.
Here's some background:
He's a senior in high school now, he has gotten into to Utah, Portland State, Oregon State, Colorado State, and is waiting on Vermont and Umass and Penn State. (Umass and PSU he refuses to go to). He is big into snow boarding (which is highly influencing his decision), wants to major in communications and marketing, and is VERY ANTI RELIGION.
I know the whole mormon deal. I have mormon friends and I know how serious they are about their church. My brother refuses to acknowledge that. We've all seen reviews and they seriously warn non mormons about attending school here due to tensions between the groups. Also its a commuter school. They have 17k students and around 1700 dorm rooms, according to my mom. My brother and my parents live in the most eastern part of PA. He will be VERY far from home and any friends. He hates us all, so he doesn't really care about this, but my parents are concerned about him being SO far away. He had a very serious medical issue last year at this time, and while he is fully recovered, my parents have been scared into what would happen under a situation like that again if no one was anywhere near him.
I was just looking for someone who goes there, or that did that could give me an honest opinion of the school and its social life (or lack there of)
Tell him to read Under the Banner of Heaven...he will definitely change his mind.

I have - great book.
But what the hell does it have to do with the University of Utah???
You're aware, I'm sure, there are more Mormons in CA than Utah?

Well, at least you saw the errors of your ways, corrected it, and moved on. Let's never speak of such things again.

It's fun to walk by the Church building whilst sipping out of your flask and hitting the J
Also Gray, your brother would hate Oregon State. Nothing but farmers and frat boys. It's like the Iowa of Oregon
