Nothing good comes out of Utah (not just the university, the entire state). I'll just get that out in the open right now.

  • Nothing against Utah personally, but why would anyone actually choose to live there?

Among other things, I hear that breweries have to make a separate beer specifically for Utah because their laws mandate that beers sold in the state have to be at a lower alcohol content than everywhere else in the U.S.

    Any truth to that?

I'm pretty sure that is still the case. I do know that if I ever need to sober up, I'll do it in a Utah bar.

Utah is one of the most beautiful states I have visited (and I lived in Washington, Oregon, and Cali). I could easily spend several months backpacking and hiking there.

I had the same misconception of the state before I went there. The southern portion of Utah is magical. I urge you to hold making an opinion of the state without actually visiting it.

I agree that it is incredibly beautiful. That said it is def. a place where I would only want to visit. You couldn't pay me to live there!

in University Monthly they listed all of Scotlands Universities above those of Utahs... just saying ;)

This sums up everything. Let's put it this way - I'm not going out of my way to go to Utah.
  • Let me clarify. Utah is not my cup of tea. However, my little brother has it SET in his head that he wants to go there for college.

    Here's some background:

He's a senior in high school now, he has gotten into to Utah, Portland State, Oregon State, Colorado State, and is waiting on Vermont and Umass and Penn State. (Umass and PSU he refuses to go to). He is big into snow boarding (which is highly influencing his decision), wants to major in communications and marketing, and is VERY ANTI RELIGION.

I know the whole mormon deal. I have mormon friends and I know how serious they are about their church. My brother refuses to acknowledge that. We've all seen reviews and they seriously warn non mormons about attending school here due to tensions between the groups. Also its a commuter school. They have 17k students and around 1700 dorm rooms, according to my mom. My brother and my parents live in the most eastern part of PA. He will be VERY far from home and any friends. He hates us all, so he doesn't really care about this, but my parents are concerned about him being SO far away. He had a very serious medical issue last year at this time, and while he is fully recovered, my parents have been scared into what would happen under a situation like that again if no one was anywhere near him.

I was just looking for someone who goes there, or that did that could give me an honest opinion of the school and its social life (or lack there of)

I've lived right next door my whole life. The landscape is beautiful in a lot of places, so only go to Utah for the scenery. But bring your own booze.

Ok, seriously. I've visited Utah universities for job recruiting purposes and they freak me right the fuck out. However, religion in general freaks me out. I don't think you brother realizes just how pervasive it is there. And I'm not trying to bash Mormons or anything. Utah consist of more than that. However, the whole culture is so conservative. Tell him to go to Colorado for the snowboarding and the education.

I will say this about the Mormans: They run a very tight ship.

I worked with a bunch of Mormans in Washington. Their communities are very well organized and structured. That said, they do not take kind to outsiders stepping onto thier turf. If he is anti-religion (and he feels the need to make it clear to other people) I would not recommend him living there. If he is able to keep his opinion to himself, then he will get along fine.

Can I ask why he's applying to schools he's not even gonna bother going to? Where in eastern PA is your family from?

Let's just say my brother is known for his opinions on those who practice religion. He cannot keep his opinions to himself.. Nor will he try. The child is a legend in his own mind.. he can "do no wrong"

Most of you people don't know what the hell you're talking about. My wife went to U of U for a couple of years before transferring to, and graduating from Westminster College in SLC.

Her brother and sister both graduated from U of U, as well as her brother's wife (who is Jewish). Yeah, Mormons run the state. No doubt. But U of U is not BYU. Salt Lake is not Provo. Not even close.

I'm getting the fuck out of Las Vegas to retire in Salt Lake. It's a great place. The people are (mostly) cool, the scenery is beautiful and the micro-brew beer is just fine.

OP - PM me if want to hear from someone who has spent a lot of time in SLC. I think the Mormons are wacky, too, but there presence is really a non-factor for me.

I know the whole mormon deal. I have mormon friends and I know how serious they are about their church. My brother refuses to acknowledge that. We've all seen reviews and they seriously warn non mormons about attending school here due to tensions between the groups.

I just saw this... who are "they"? It's not like that. Really.
If I had known then what I know now...

    Vegas 93, Vegas 98, Vegas 00 (10 year show), Vegas 03, Vegas 06
    VIC 07
    EV LA1 08
    Seattle1 09, Seattle2 09, Salt Lake 09, LA4 09
    Columbus 10
    EV LA 11
    Vancouver 11
    Missoula 12
    Portland 13, Spokane 13
    St. Paul 14, Denver 14
    Philly I & II, 16
    Denver 22

PSU is the fall back school like if all else failed I think. Umass is where my parents went. My brother would love umass if it was his idea but since my parents suggest it, it's apparently a horrible choice. (which drives me insane because I wanted to go to umass so badly but my patents said if I was going to go to a state school I had to go to a PA state school. I guess since they paid for it, they had more say. The situation in my family is very different now than it was when I was a senior in high school)

They all live in bucks county PA.

Nice. PSU's a good time though, I don't get how someone wouldn't want to go there. And there's plenty of places to go boarding up there.

I was recruited to go there for basketball, and lets just say that the tension you hear about on campus is definitely there, I never even had to visit. The team came out to watch one of my games while they were in town for the John Wooden Classic. You could see the tension between teammates at times.

And it's not so much that people can't get along, it's just the young age, mixed with everyone not knowing how to keep their mouth shut during the right time. Not that people shouldn't voice their opinion, it's just....grudges, and actions on those grudges are made easily at that age with whatever is pushing their influences.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you one of the more conservatve folks who posts in the MT section? I'm too lazy to go look. If so, that might explain why it doesn't seem like a big deal to you or your family. I know how Utah feels to me and I certainly don't belong there. Then again, I'm kind of a hooligan. But I'm glad you like it.

  • imalive - I'll send you the link if the reviews my mom sent me, later when I an back on my computer. She is totally freaked out. It's reviews on tons of colleges by students. I've never been to Utah but I did read the reviews on my undergrad school and my grad school and I mostly review with the things said. I'd love for you to take a look and see if you agree with any of the things said. It's kinds the blind leading the blind. My brother knows nothing about Utah first hand and neither do my parents. So instead they sit around and argue with each other. I thought I'd try to get some real opinions for them.
