Okay.. I refuse to go backwards and gain weight over the holidays. I've worked so hard all year, and I am currently still trying to lose weight. Who else wants to start a:

I'm already working on it....but plan to enjoy my favorites. My Christmas work dinner (we usually go very high class, a place I could never afford to go to dinner on my own) are a free for all. Also Christmas breakfast, gotta love that. A few nibbles here and there, but otherwise staying the course.

Thanksgiving is easy, I don't love turkey..usually try to hit the Macys Thanksgiving day parade, take the train home and cook up a small turkey breast, potatoes (which are going to be scalloped for me this year), roast some veggies w/ olive oil, cornbread stuffing and cranberry sauce. I don't like gravy but will go a little wild and have a good piece of pecan pie!

I need to keep my eye on the prize which is a healthy and toned bod for summer next year. I know I can never be 25 again, but I'm not dead yet!
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

The holidays are a bitch...I try to restrict myself like crazy beforehand so i can pig out during the holidays and not gain too much weight. But I exercise regularly so I really don't gain much weight during that time.

now is the time to get the lap band surgery, eh?
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Well, I'm glad some people want to join in!!

I'm not like, a binge eater that eats horrible, and now I am going to try to lose over the holidays. Thats torture! I've lost a total of 66lbs now, and the holidays make me nervous. Not because I think I am going to gain 66lbs during thanksgiving dinner, but more like I've come so far I want to keep going in the same direction and not lose momentum. Once you've lost, its heartbreaking to see the scales go back the other way.

So, for those who are in, I am dedicated to helping you all out. And if anyone has any low-fat recipes for thanksgiving favorites, please post them. I'll be at my in-laws this year and its like a contest to use the most lard in one dish. Help!

I'm in...at least to maintain weight. I dropped from 203-178 last year for my wedding and have stayed in the range all year, kind of like Jared ;). Anyway my optimal BMI is 172 so I'd like to give it a shot to get down there. That last little bit has proved to be difficult...but I'll give it a shot.

well, i don't plan on going on any diets...that includes low-fat. i might eat some low fat products but not all.

a certain Bond actor was on tv the other night and said he never diets...just hits the gym 5/6 times a week.

i'm going to be the next James Bond...

there's something to be said for banging out a workout in the gym several days a week. Although I've been stuck on 178 it's b/c I drink to much, and eat to much bad food, bud I don't go too far up from that point since I work out as much as my body allows.

Right after I get home from a 8 day cruise.....I'll join you! I will be leaving this Saturday 11/1. I hope to eat right on the cruise and maybe work out....which I've been really bad about for a couple of years and it is starting to really catch up with me now.

Whatever happened to just plain staying at a good weight without gains nor losses?

whatever happened to reality and realizing some people don't manage that always and thus have to make changes? :p

hell, i was always thin, and i mean THIN...until my 30s. it kinda crept up on me and i didn't even realize. i hadn't changed my eating or exercise - or lack thereof ;) - i simply got older, and sure...quit smoking too. beyond that, sure...i should've taken care of it right away, but when you are used to doing nothing special to maintain your weight, it's a bit of a shock. other people always had weight issues, even as children. genetics do play a role. so yea....i totally understand.

    good for you gray!
i've got a *big* birthday at the end of the month and am rathered annoyed with myself b/c i have not stayed focused at all, and thus will be no where near where i wanted to be by my birthday. however, i AM getting srious about it, so sure during the holidays i will be more diligent. however, i WILL indulge on my birthday, thanksgiving, christmas.......but in between i will sure to keep up with my healthy eating, and will be sensible in my choices for indulgences. hopefully by NYE i will be close to what i desire for myself and 2009 will have a great start!

    good luck!
    :)

If you keep drinking too much and eating bad food, it won't matter if you get down to 172...you'll still be just as unhealthy. You'll just weigh less, that's all. You mentioned your BMI before....ignore that. It's definitely an out-dated metric that doesn't tell you anything really.

If you want to measure something, measure body fat percentage and cholesterol levels. Those things will tell you how healthy you are. Weight/BMI aren't really good indicators of anything relating your health. Unfortunately, you can't use lots of exercise to "make up" for an unhealthy diet...it doesn't work like that. Diet is 90% of the game, and of course it's the hardest thing to control :p

I was into watching the baseball season for the first time in my 40 years (you soon, eh?)

Your signature always reminds me how much I miss hippiemom.

I haven't been baking much - more knitting. However, a couple months ago I think I perfected brownies. Don't use tinfoil inside the pan, use waxed paper, and let the brownies bake about 5-10 minutes longer. Use 2 types of cocoa powder to mix it up a bit. Divine!

ahhhh...knitting is far better for the waistline. :p
    however, brownies sound divine!
and me too, VERY soon......brownies are always welcome. ;):D

hippiemom...coming up on the one year anniversary already, 12.08. :(

back to weightloss and the holidays though, i truly think it's an EXCELLENT idea to think and plan ahead like that. allow indulgences absolutely, but be prepared, have a plan, and already should do far better than mindlessly munching your way thru the holidays! not the least of whcih would be a very scary start to the new year! :p

Okay.. I refuse to go backwards and gain weight over the holidays. I've worked so hard all year, and I am currently still trying to lose weight. Who else wants to start a:

great idea. I love how folks have been supporting each other in the "stop smoking" thread - and think this could be very helpful to us here! Count me in :)

I think my first major hurdle is going to be staying away from all the Halloween candy that my kids bring home, and that other folks bring into the office (already happening!) I am not going to say NO completely (cause then I'd just break my word) but I'm going to say only one small piece of halloween candy per day.

I just bought a little notepad to start to write down what I eat in November. Just to get a clue, and maybe change some behaviour patterns over time.

    thjat is an AWESOME idea.
i used to do that the one/only time i truly decided to 'diet' and it was an enourmous help! of course, i didn't keep up the healthy eating and thus where i am now. lesson definitely learned. what i have been doing as of late is weighing myself daily and nothing down my weight and fluctuations for the week, and then the total thus far. it does help me. i've maintained the same weight for a year. i know what i have to do to change it, so if i get it going....seeing those numbers change for the better is definitely motivating for me. food diaries are well-known for helping with success, whether for weight loss, maintanence, both...or simply a healthy lifestyle.
