Love for Pilates

So.. I took Yoga for a long time, and I really thought it was relaxing, but I didn't really notice any body benefits. I am already pretty flexible, and balanced. So I took up Pilates some time back, and I must say, I'M IN LOVE. Pilates makes me feel like I could go kick some major butt. I feel so strong, and so fit.

Do any of your practice Pilates? I do mat Pilates right now.

And also, do any of you teach Pilates? Or know someone who is an instructor? I'm seriously considering going through the certification process, so I could eventually teach. I think its such an amazing work out, and I'd love to go further with it, and pass it on to others.

I love Pilates...I was exercising for a while but recently incorporated pilates and i really see the difference. I do the mat exercises but standing is great. I also have this ballet conditioning dvd which is similiar to pilate. I def. recommend it.

I've been practicing mat pilates for about 3 years as part of my workout. I have noticed a huge difference in my core muscles. I really enjoy it.

if you do pilates at home, any recommendations for DVDs? i am most definitely not the gym type, and would love to get involved in something like this. i think i would find yoga too boring, i've tried...but pilates sounds like it could be perfect. also, i would REALLY love to get stronger, especially my core...so it would be all good.

libra - i'd be interested in the ballet DVD as well. obviously pilates was first developed FOR those working in ballet, so definitely related. :)

I miss my pilates class I used to take and I really need to get back into it. My core is well ... sad :(

In the fall I think I will do some more. I want to get a home dvd to do but I also need some classes.

My abs are still sore from the other night that I worked out

I wanted to be a ballerina so badly.. Not like as a career, but as a young girl, it was such the in thing to do at the time. BUT, I went to like a nazi ballet studio and when I was 5, you had to skip to pass the test, and move forward, and I couldn't get it down, and the teacher would scream at me, and slap my feet with a ruler! So my ballet career ended at 5 :(

My friend told me about a studio in Chicago that does have ballet classes for people who want to just get a good ballet work out. It's not like competitive super thin ballerinas in training for shows. Maybe I should check that out too. I think it would be fun.. and plus, I can skip now!

I tried to do DVDs, but I really like having the teacher there to correct subtle things with positioning and stuff. I recently read an article about how you can really injure yourself badly from small mistakes in Pilates and Yoga and stuff. I wish the one on one sessions weren't so pricey.. Its group classes for now!

Very true. My wife used to teach Pilates and as such, I have done my share. Good stuff. However, it is really easy to be do something wrong and cause more harm than good. Instructors help a lot.

I've done the Method pilates video:

    http://www.collagevideo.com/workout-video/method-pilates-precision-toning-and-sculpting-7315

There is also a Yogalites video that mixes yoga and pilates.

I do think it helps to at least attend a few classes to learn the proper form, etc. first...but overall I prefer doing most of my workouts at home. I love working out...but I am NOT the gym type!

    thanks!
    i shall look into it.

i may also look into classes, but i know they are pricey...and also difficult to fit in my work schedule. i could possibly do weekend classes, but my preference is not as everyone else with a busy workweek such as myself will be there. :p

a DVD is always a good place for me to start. even to just watch, observe...and a helluva lot less of a financial commitment too.

i have an excercise ball with an accompanying DVD...sitting in my closet well over a year now. :o i get the words and then i get to thinkin'.....;) it's getting to ACTION that proves the most difficult for me. :D

You're welcome! I think it's all about finding a workout that's fun and that you actually enjoy doing. I get bored really easily, so I do something different every day. I need to keep it interesting or I'll just wind up dreading it.

working out and fun...does not compute. ;)

just yesterday someine was posting a similar idea....and i agree. however, he was pointing to 'real' activity, not working out for the sake of working out. i agree with both. i just need to find my fun in it. :D

I cannot do pilates for the life of me.

I've gone to different instructors and stuff...it just does not make sense to me, like all the tiny muscles you're supposed to find, I just don't know what they're talking about. then I get frustrated that I'm wasting valuable work out time. yeah, I've decided that I'm really bad at exercise that requires thinking. i'm like meathead.

Maybe you were trying too advanced moves? They have a lot of beginner dvds. It was challenging for me at first..it still is but that's what I like about it. I can feel my muscles getting stronger. It makes me feel good mentally too.

nah I did go to beginner classes and I bought a dvd at one point...I just don't have the patience for this kind of thing. I need to feel like I'm doing something like sweating my ass off or feeling burn in my muscles. I know people claim you can get this from pilates, but as I said, I'm stupid on this stuff. All I remember was lying on the floor trying to locate some area of my abdomen that I was supposed to "contract as if I were urinating." Since I couldn't find this area, it was more like just lying on the floor for me.

All I know, is I feel my abs burning like hell during Pilates, and that makes me just push it further and further.

We only lay on the floor for like 30 seconds and try to pull everything into our core. Did you not feel like you were burning to pieces when they had you keep your shoulder blades and upper back off the floor and have your legs straight out in a 45 degree angle from the floor? You either went to a real crappy class, or you have abs of steel.

All I know is that my classes don't feel like a single wasted moment. I felt like Yoga was a bit on the wasted side, but Pilates makes me feel like I am going to have a 6 pack the moment I leave class (IF ONLY!)

oh right, pulling everything into the core! that's what I can't do. I can't do the like, conceptual stuff (I also have the same problem with yoga). But also I haven't tried this for maybe five years...I think the way it is done in classes now is different-a few years ago it was very like "picture this" and "image that" kind of thing. (spinning was really like that too in the beginning-it has changed considerably).
I went to a few different classes, most of it was on the floor I think.
to me, it felt like I do a lot of ab work anyway, so it was just like a more...confusing way to do the same thing.

I think with pilates you really have to "get" it (as you seem to) in order for it to be useful. the getting it probably comes with time, and as I said, that's what I don't have patience for.

so like how is pilates more of a burn than other abdominal routines?

like the one graysaturday described with you arms and back off the floor and your legs at 45 degrees- I think I do that anyway (if I'm picturing the same thing) so how does it differ in pilates?

I guess it differs from traditional crunches, where you have our hands behind your head that there is more emphasis on using your core. I know when Im doing a long set of scissors or other exercises with my shoulders off the ground I def. feel my abs working.

Oh I used to do the scissors thing too. maybe I've been doing pilates all along???
(I've never done crunches with my hands behind my head too?? I usually put them on my stomach?)

well yeah there are so many variations on crunches..I guess with pilates it's more about using your core to power the movements...Im not so good describing it...I like doing it though. I know doing crunches on a fitness ball is better then on the ground because it's more challenging.

I actually use one of those inflatable disks- so you get resistance on both sides of the crunch, which is like a ball effect as well. I've never taken to the swiss balls though. I used to do this awesome reverse crunch on them but at the gym I'm at now there's nothing to hold on to behind my head. I also used to do my upperbody strength training on them in order to work my core simultaneously, but I wasn't really feeling it was working as well as predicted.

I'd love to take a class. I get bored and lose motivation when doing a dvd. Maybe once I start working I'll join a gym...

I'm the same way, can't work out at home at all.
plus with a dvd, you never really know if you're doing something right, you don't have an instructor or even a mirror.
