So yeah..I was investigating PC mover because my number 1 concern is how I would move all my files, settings, etc to a new computer. Evidently you need usb 2.0 to use the thing.....am I totally screwed?

No...I think there's software that will help, but honetsly, i've used 2.0 on ports not totally compatible, it's just suuuuuuper slow. Do you have a dvd burner? That's another good way to back stuff up.
If you really don't want to get a new PC, i'd suggest backing up your data and reinstalling completely on your current machine. That will help A LOT. If you still have your XP disks and key....

yeah im pretty sure they aren't 2.0...i remember someone tried to plug in their mp3 player into it and it wouldn't even recognize it. It is apparently old..it's 5 years old but you would think it's older.
If your CPU is that old, it's probably time for a new one. Computer years are like "dog years". 5 years is more like 35 years. Your hard drive is probably only 40GB and with all the stuff you have on it that's why your getting that message.

BTW. Recognizing new fittings (equipment?) - it rather depends on Your system. If You have windows xp it should works without any drivers outside (i mean - cd or internet) - it's all (almost) in windows, but if You have older that windows xp - it can be a problem.
If U tried to connect mp3... and didn't have any technical problem to connect (i mean cable and bla, bla bla) and the endings fit each other, so only your computer didn't see it. As I wrote - probably Your system failed or it was really unknown mp3 ( i mean really bad company production).
Anyway - explain how many GB of ROM and how big RAM do You have?

oh my....just did a quick search and it seems you have a 30g hard drive....yea it's full....you could do a lot of things to try to save this computer but if you can swing it, i'd get a new computer....solid notebooks can be had for $500 nowadays....:)

As someone said here - but an external hard disc - You should have usb 2.0 (check it on wikipedia - i mean the ending). It should be easy to connect.
You can buy new computer, but anyway - if it works, you can buy new hard disc (external! You should not try to buy new hard disc for Your laptop - it's too expensive - thinking for a few years or earlier you will have to buy a new one anyway).
BTW. You wrote about Adobe Photoshop. It is really big programm - check how much memory does take it up (sorry, i'm not sure it's correct english). And i.e. Adobe Acrobat Reader - it takes more memory than for example Foxit Reader (it reads .pdf the same as Acrobat).

I would like to do a fast fix in the meantime but I think this computer is too old it's like 5 years old and they phased out this model as soon as I bought it. If you have photoshop and don't need it - get rid of it. It is a huge program.
I'd get rid of Norton too - even if you have a paid subscription.
To get rid of these - go to the control panel and then add/remove programs
Norton will leave stuff behind...but it's better than nothing. You can get a "no nav" program that you can run and it deletes the registery entries, etc. but it's not necessary.
Someone said rebuilding is a good idea - I totally agree.
And it would be nice to know the stats on your computer...just right click on "My Computer" and go to "Properties". Read what it says under "Computer" and put that info here.
Then - double click on "My Computer" and right click on the "C" drive - go to "properties". It will tell you how big your hard drive is and how much room you have available. Put that info here too and we can give you better recommendations!

if you were to buy a new computer, you can take the hd out of your old one and use it as an external hd....makes it easy to transfer/access the files from the old computer....:)

Anyway... USB 2.0 was introduced in 2000. Am I correct? So, if I could see You computer specification and read it right - You should have USB 2.0.
I guess an external hard disc will be usefull in any case. It doesn't matter if U have old or new computer. And hard discs are now rather cheap (now, as I heard - flash tries to conquer hard discs...). Of course - I think about Poland and Europe. i know it depends on how many costs dollar;)

Yes, she can have it. But it seems not very difficult to check if there is a hidden partition...) I meant - about partitions... if she has only two partitions - one with system and her own files and second with hidden partition (zipped system) - if she had low memory - she should buy a new computer or new hard disc.
If she did (or someone else with help) a few partition - it would be easier, I think, to copy her files...

Well....I hate to talk to soon, but it seems my computer may be stable for the meantime, thanks to PatrickBateman's suggestion to dl ccleaner. It got rid of a lot of crap that I didn't even know I had on my computer :eek:.
