I spent most of yesterday and now today messing w/my computer...specifically norton. It WILL NOT download updates...I have 2006 and thinking I may need to download the new version. I think it's my computer too. It keeps saying my memory is low...

fricke!

I know this probably belongs in the tech. forum but I figured more people would see it here.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything would be very appreciated.

Thank you!

  • I'm not an expert but pretty much any technical website will recommend getting rid of Norton. It takes up a lot of space and greatly slows everything down. There are numerous free programs that will do the same thing without being such a resource hog. If you check out different sites, you will get a good idea of what to use.

Supposedly Norton is a pain in the ass to remove from your computer, I believe there are programs that you can download to effectively remove all traces of it.

Again I'm no expert but on my machine, I use Windows Defender, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG Anti-Virus.

thank you very much..that is helpful information. I did hear it's a resource hog..my computer is old anyway and doesn't have such a big Hard drive. How about Mcafee?

Yeah I tried to get rid of some old files and such. I think it's Norton that's screwing everything up. I would just uninstall the fucker and havean end to it. But I have a paid subscription..I should ask for a refund.

Thank you for your help. I will check that out :)

Norton finally installed the updates. I cleared some old files off my computer so they could install. I think I need a computer w/a bigger hard drive.

get an external harddrive for all your stuff, then you're computer will run much faster. it worked for mine, and you can get external hds now for fairly cheap

You know I was thinking about that. I know this may be a dumb question, but where do you connect them, a usb port?

I think my computer may be dying. I always see "low disk space" pop up. I will run the disk clean up and then see it again a day later.

Does anyone know how I can fix this or is my computer on it's way out. Someone told me that may be the case..I hope not :(

hard drive sounds full....you can either

    get a new computer

    or

buy an external hard drive and transfer files over to it
  • JennytreeJennytree Posts: 5,340
    What Cutback said!

You need to delete files, transfer them to another drive or buy another hard drive or PC. You could also go through your list of programs in Control Panel/add remove programs to see if there are any ones there you don't use but are taking up lots of space.

thanks...yeah someone suggested an external hard drive. I tried deleting old files and I ran the disk clean up thing. I tried defragmenting but i didn't even have enough memory to run it. Someone loaded adobe photoshop on my comp. I don't use it I think i will get rid of that. I just didn't know if I was missing something.

Time for a new computer I think.

that could be a virus..do you have a virus program? It sounds like you have some spyware or something. I hate norton though...it's been making my computing life a fricken hell lately.

get a mac. then you won't have to mess with norton or other annoying antivirus programs :)

and definitely get an external to back up all your files.
thats what i did, i have hardly anything saved on my computer and it runs alot better.

Download the free version of ad aware and run that and get rid of everything it tells you it finds. It sounds like your getting slammed with Spyware. If you don't have an anti-virus program I recommend either Avast or AVG. They are all free and can be downloaded from http://www.download.com.

    Hope this helps!

Jen, is it Norton with the new back up component to the package? Because we updated to that recently and we've had no end of trouble with it. Even spent a great deal of time on the phone to India and they still couldn't fix it.

What you're describing with the memory low business, well we had that and it's crap. Utter crap. I even spent a great deal of time deleting files and stuff and it continued.

Not that long ago I used some Windows wizard to run a back up, apparently you can only do it once but it seems to have shut Norton up for the time being.
    NOPE!!!

They do connect USB but, does your computer have USB 2.0? Not sure how well external hard drives work unless you have the 2.0 ports. Desktops are pretty cheap nowadays....4th of july is coming up. Lots of places should have sales! :)

There are many things you can do to your computer to bump up your performance but some just cost money and in the long run you'd be better off with a basic, not top of the line, new one.

yeah im pretty sure they aren't 2.0...i remember someone tried to plug in their mp3 player into it and it wouldn't even recognize it. It is apparently old..it's 5 years old but you would think it's older.

I have 2006 Norton...it's a pain though...sometimes there is an envelope on the bottom of my screen that tells me to download an update to my liveupdate software..frankly with how this computer is acting i really am afraid of trying to do that. I wish i could get rid of it but I already paid for a subscription that doesn't expire until next year. But I think it's the reason I get the low memory message. Im dreading when I have to dl new virus definitions cuz that always takes forever..because it usually give me an error message :(

I had that too, the little icon on the bottom right on the footer. It would pop up saying live updates all the time. I doubt very much your memory is low though. I got that message all the time too and there's NO WAY I've managed to fill up this computers memory. I'm really struggling to remember what we did to fix it. I think the guy in India got rid of it for me while we were have those link up sessions when we got the new package.
I'd had Norton for years you know and never any trouble but this past 18 months I'm completely over them. Can you run a scan maybe? See what it spits up?
