Well I was pretty drunk at the time of posting :p Hard to detect sarcasm at 5 in the morning ;).
Still though, there have been some great musicals over the years. Too many people discount lots of films just because there's singing. I think it's an awful way to look at things.

No probs mate. I'll be frank here though, finding out it was a musical put me off seeing it, just not my thing.:)
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

But it is one of the most awesome musicals ever written!
I worked at the Goodspeed Opera house one summer (home of Annie) :p and worked on Sweeney...amazing.
The music is incredible. Some quite operatic.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away

Haven't seen it, I always think musicals are for girls. I don't want to stereotype, but musicals are for girls and gay guys, cowboy films are for boys...well except that one the other year...sheesh!! :)

I just don't know how people watched that movie. It just looks so vile and repugnant... but that's just me.

    What seemed distasteful about it?
It is a love story with some great tunes.
People either loved it or hated it.
I thought it was awesome and well cast.
Sets, costumes and makeup were on point.
    Loved it.
    Because she is a courtesan?

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

  • I thought this was a brilliant film. I've seen a DVD of the original production and I loved it as well, but I truly believe Tim Burton is the only director of our time who could have pulled this off so effortlessly. A gothic musical turned into a Burton film is pretty much guaranteed to be amazing, and I was not in the least disappointed. Helena Bonham-Carter's voice was not all that strong but it suited the character of Mrs. Lovett and added to her character even more dimensions, just in the delivery. Johnny Depp was as flawless as always, and although I am biased, he was VERY impressive as a singer. I was blown away by his talent and ability to convey so much passion and raw emotion through song. One thing I've always admired about Depp since his Ed Wood days is his masterful portrayal of just about any type of person imaginable, while making the viewer come quite close to forgetting who he is. Even now that he's become one of the hottest stars in Hollywood after the Pirates trilogy, Depp can still take on a role with such passion that he becomes his character. He was frightening and charismatic and powerful as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and I can't wait to see it again. :D Well done, to the dynamic duo that is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, for yet another masterpiece.

    I 2nd that!

Although some people don't want to see it because they don't like musicals, I don't like horror movies. But I saw it anyway because Johnny Depp is such great actor. I thought it was too graphic with the blood spurting everywhere, etc., and I didn't know the story so I found the ending to be disturbing. As soon as the credits rolled, I told my friends that it was a good movie and I'm glad I saw it but I don't plan to see it again. Of course, a week later I was early to another movie and decided to sneak into Sweeny Todd in the meantime. Turns out I can't get enough! And I totally agree with whoever quoted the poet line from A Little Priest - my favorite!

I would suggest that people give it a try even if they don't like musicals.

I think it's all of the colors in the movie... and the costumes. Yup, too bright and too "dressy." That doesn't make too much sense, but that's the reason.
