Virus Protection (for my computer!)

The free trial is about to end on my laptop. I currently am using Norton and found it to be a damn good virus protection. I'm not sure if I should renew with Norton or go with another software program. I know there's alot of IT dudes here on the Pit so I'm hoping for some good recommendations. Cheap but effective is what I'm aiming for!

I had Norton for a long time and finally got rid of it. It was taking so much of my computer's resources. I got AVG and it's really good. But then again my computer was old.

  • I used to use AVG (which is good) but was getting update errors so I switched to Avast! and have been happy ever since. AVG seems to be heading towards being bloated. I think the latest installer is something like 48mb.

you will hear all sorts of opinions I am sure, but I install Avast on all my builds

edit: Avira is good as well

I have a friend that uses and suggest Avast (she said it's free?). I am wary of "free" virus protection...it just seems too good to be true?? (I guess I'm just really cynical.)

NOD32 is a great antivirus- I've switched our whole company and it has made our computers and servers soooo much faster! Norton is a resource hog...you'll be amazed. Also - many hackers will program their viruses to get around the big cats (Norton, McAfee).

    Free 30 day trial here:
    http://www.eset.com/

If you do switch to anything else- make sure to uninstall your Norton first or it can cause many issues.

    cheers :)

I have been using it for awhile and it picks up all my "intentional" virus's

If you want to pay NOD32 is great, if not Avast/Avira/AVG is the way to go

    NOD32? Never heard of it.

P.S. What about 'un'intentional viruses? And very importantly, what about spyware?? Do Avast (etc...) do a good job keeping peeping toms out of my lappy??

  • IF you want to stay free-

Here is what I put on my PC:
    AVAST
    Spybot search and destroy
    Spyware blaster
    ccleaner
    Opera/Firefox
    common sense ;)

I use Super Anti Spyware whenever the "users" in my company manage to land a piece of Spy Ware on their CPU's. I used it for a scanner CPU that we have and it worked perfectly.

word on the street is the new yoggie express card is the best protection for laptops. You can uninstall all your AV software, freeing up resources, as all internet traffic is routed through the card first.

Look it up. They also do gatekeeper USB sticks

After checking reviews from you guys and cnet.com I think I have decided to go with AVG (I didn't like the 'music player' theme of Avast).

Does Windows Defender come with my OS (Vista Home Premium)? I think I've seen something like that.

Been using AVG for years, and it's still great imo.

Windows Defender has to be installed. It doesn't come with your computer:

Also, I have another question regarding "Spybot search and destroy". I installed it and when I went to do an update it didn't just do it automatically. It gave me a list of sites to update from??? HELP!! I'm not familiar with that at all!

    That wasn't any better. :D;)

It's like a physical firewall. Most personal computers have no firewall at all, or occasionally a program installed on your computer that checks things as they arrive.

Rather than having software on your computer that checks after it arrives, this little card receives all the information which then checks the info BEFORE it ever gets to your computer.

Pretty cool :) A bit spendy for a personal user (my opinion) but would be great for traveling business folks that insist on connecting to unsecured wireless networks.
