this is a copyright thing...the way itunes has been programmed, it will look to see what is on your computer and that is what is transferred to your ipod. If it looks at the computer and the music is no longer there, it will remove it from your ipod.
That way, I can't hook up my ipod to someone else's computer, download their music, and then go back to my computer and upload the music to my own computer. But it totally sucks if you have a hard drive crash.
do you know if your computer "crash" was the hard drive failing? or something else? (motherboard, fan, power supply, etc)? Because if it was not the hard drive - you can get your music back. Even if it is an error with 'windows', there is software out there that will allow you to connect and transfer files (bart PE comes to mind... http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#intro).
Or you can always take your computer to someplace like circuit city or geek squad - they may be able to recover your music files.
You can purchase a backup external harddrive now pretty cheap to back up anything you care about (music/photos/documents).
You have to authorize your roomie's computer for your purchases (with your iTunes ID and password) and you don't want to sync, but transfer purchases to her iTunes. It sounds like it is already too late. Once you sync to her iTunes you lose what was on your iPod.
Pointless crap like this is why people steal music and don't feel bad about it..
I love my female wife...
we sit around and wonder exactly why our marriage should feel threatened by gay marriage
OoooooOoOoOo... The age old story of forgetting to undo the sync option on iTunes. You're not alone. I personally have never done it, but I have seen friends do it. Never a pretty sight. My heart goes out to you.

Eh...in the great scheme of the world, it's a minor detail. I'll figure it out...or move on. (Granted, I WAS freaking out last night.)

Um...hi. I wasn't trying to steal any music. I was trying to upload more of MY own cd's to my iPod. That's all.
