I'm gonna disagree with the 'health foods' label so as not to scare a lot of people off. While they definitely have some healthy options, the food is jus' plain ol good and unique from anything that you'd get anywhere else.

AGREED!! Health foods was the first thing that came to mind...they do have organics and healthy stuff, but it's not necessarily "health foods". My bad.

I don't have one of them near me...well in reasonable distance at least
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
  • We actually get all our toiletries at Trader Joes. Their toilet paper and paper towels are made out of recycled paper and they have lots of shampoos that aren't tested on animals. They also have good prices on vitamins.

I believe Trader Joes is just on the west coast, correct? My father in law raves about the place just about every time I talk to him it seems like. He lived in OC for many years and his sons live in there now. His big thing is the relatively inexpensive, quality wines and vermouth. The man probably has like five bottles of sweet and five of dry vermouth and buys me some every time he goes back to CA. I don't need that much vermouth, I hardly use the stuff as it is. I'm a beer and gin and tonic man.

Nope. There are locations in the east. I lived in Boston and went to the Cambridge location every week.

Well hell, they need to come to Texas then. I'm sending a note to the man.

I got a bunch of PMs regarding my post and figured I'd respond here as well.

Yes ... in Canada we have a brand called President's Choice. I know we have a Prime Minister and not a President. I'm not the one who named the brand. LOL

We have President's Choice in Grand Rapids, MI... wish we had a TJs here - used to go when I lived in Chicago, not exactly the same experience, but close to it. Maybe I'm more easy going than others... plus I rarely drove then. I miss not having to drive.

I could throw a stone from my house to my neighborhood TJ's. Their goods are great but I hate going there. It's always a clusterf**k. Sometimes, there are actually tour buses on the curb :p. I call it The Lonely Hearts Club since they sell so many things that are (or can be) portioned for one person. Since I hate the place so much, my wife takes care of the TJ runs 99% of the time :D.

It's totally a clusterfuck. That's the *perfect* word for it.

yeah you need to find one that isn't so crowded. the one in my small city is quite nice. though i do know better than to go there on a saturday afternoon. their food is so cheap, good and most of it is healthy...that i really love that place :)

  • I have such a love/hate relationship with that store. I LOVE the food, amazing wine prices, and just a great atmosphere. BUT...I *HATE* going there. It's always so crowded. I get so stressed out when I'm in there...I end up wanting to ram my cart into people. And, then the parking lot is always a disaster, too. It doesn't matter which TJ's I go to...they're all nightmares.

Anyone else with me on this??

every grocery store is like that where i live, so it doesn't really matter. however I find that TJ's are always in places I have to drive to. that I really hate.

Love TJ's! Excellent wine selection, lots of vitamins, fair trade coffee, lots of great juice, nuts & dried fruits, cheese isle to die for, lots of vegetarian options for cheap, etc. However, I hate that they don't open till 9am and close at 9pm - going before or after is how I like to beat the crowds. It is a clusterfuck, but I go every week anyways.

don't they call themselves an "alternative grocery store" or something to that effect?

really, if you do like health foods, they are much cheaper at TJ's than the regular grocery store, that's what's good about it. However, the produce is generally pretty bad. they have a good selection of bagged vegetables, but the fruit is usually pretty scant.

but they've got a lot of unhealthy foods! that's always my problem when I go there- trying to avoid that unbelievable cookie isle (mmmm ginger snaps), all the chocolate covered nuts and fruits, and the cheap microbrews...oh man and don't get me started on the frozen appetizers. for christmas I bought these things there that were like pastry with raspberry and brie filling...

*note, however, that most of the cookies and stuff are more "natural" than your usual oreos and chips ahoy...
