Anyone ever buy a puppy online?

or any other pet for that matter?

we've been looking at a lot of sites and some of them say they will ship the pup to you. i don't know, i would almost rather go and check it out before i put the money down. but that requires a plane ticket and time off work.

i'm thinking it's almost worth it to just have it boxed up and shipped to me.

input? questions? suggestions?

I would bet any online puppies are pet shop puppies. Go to your local pound and pick one up. You're a) keeping a dog from being condemned to death and b) not supporting puppie mills. Plus you have a lower likelihood of getting a throughly inbred and problem laden dog. And you'll spend less.

They really ship puppies via UPS or Fedex?
I'd pay for the express shipping if I were you

I second that. There are hundreds of thousands of dogs in shelters waiting for a great home. Please check there. Shelters have all different kinds of dogs, and puppies. Please don't mail order a puppy, that supports back yard breeders, and puppy mills.

I don't think I could ship an animal. That almost sounds like cruelty to me. I mean, you wouldn't ship a toddler via FedEx if you wanted to adopt it.

That said, I agree with the others about going to a pound/shelter.

There are great dogs in many shelters that need a good home.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about shelter animals is that they have behavioral problems from being homeless for so long.

That misconception was furthered by the Movie "Meet the Parents" in which a shelter cat tore up the Robert DeNiro's house.

But, the truth is that shelter animals undergo a rigorous obedience screening that lasts several weeks and virtually ensures that the animal is 100% ready for human interaction before being put up for adoption.

Can't watch youtube at work, but is the first one the ASPCA commercial with Sarah McLachlan? That one gets to me too. Those puppies are just so sad looking. :(

My husband refuses to watch it. I just continue to watch it and choke up.

I would never buy a puppy on-line EVEN IF for some reason I did not adopt a stray. When you buy on-line you are not buying from a reputable breeder. You are probably buying a puppy mill puppy.

wow, you people really jumped on this...and i appreciate it.

we are definitely going to go to some shelters, looking at dogs online is something we do at night though. the thing is, my wife knows what she wants and also we are trying to get a medium size dog...not a yapper and nothing too big since we might be moving into an apartment soon.

i have only really been looking at those that list the fact that the puppy lives indoors with them and they have kids...too many talk abouts kennels and the dogs being outside...i assume this is what many of you mean by puppy mills?

so yea, we'll hit up the shelters next week. i just wanted to ask someone other than my mother about the online route.

    I agree with this.

In fact, I am getting ready to adopt a dog from our local dog pound, this summer. I can't wait. I keep checking out the available dogs at the pound on-line, but I know i can't even begin to pick one out yet as I have to wait until June or July.

Do you have a way to verify that it true? Puppy mills have such a bad rep now, if I was the owner of one I would advertise like I wasn't.

No shit. The first time me and my g/f saw that commercial I nearly started crying. I got up, grabbed my wallet, grabbed the keys and headed for the door. My g/f starts asking me where I'm going and I tell her I plan on going to the nearest pet stores and buying every damn animal I see. She took away my wallet for the next day.

Oh, I sure will. I will post pictures and everything.

I want a Lab - and right now there is an over abundance of black labs in our pound - which just breaks my heart. But what is there when I am ready, I will have to wait and see.

It will be the hardest thing to only adopt 1 dog. i will want to take at least 10 home I bet. :)

    I agree.
I don't believe breeding should be encouraged while dogs are daily being destroyed due to lack of people wanting to re-home them. I'm not saying all, but some breeders, unfortunately only see pound signs instead of the tiny lives that they are responsible for. I don't know much about the states or other countries but here in the UK, puppy farms tend to be horrific squaller filled holes where dogs are just kept and disposed of.

There are good breeders out there however. I'm not trying to take away from them, I'm sure they love and care for the animals they breed. I just think that people should be a little more aware of the amount of mongrels, that love and make great pets like any other dog that are sat in kennels waiting for homes or judgement day.

I personally would never buy or home an animal over the internet that I hadn't seen in the flesh. I wouldn't be too happy about my future pet being in transit for long periods of time and I'd want to know where it came from...

    but that's just me :)

first time i went to a shelter i wanted to take every dog home....heart wrenching...

i adopted what i thought was a black lab puppy and he looks just like one yet he is a mix of many dogs....which, imo, is the perfect dog :)
