What is the attraction to myspace or facebook?

I'm not necessarily slamming anybody who has a myspace or facebook page.

But I am curious as to why people do have them. Any of you who have either, can you shed some light on this for me? Just a forewarning, I will be combative.:)

But I honestly don't get it.

I use it to keep in touch with friends who I went to college with. I went to an out of state college and have friends who live all across the country.

I also use it to promote my photography. its free networkiring and advertising.

THe only reason I use facebook is uni.
If someone's having a party usually people use facebook instead of phoning everyone. Plus it makes it so much easier to make last minute plans, and let everyone know if there's a change of plan.
Photo tagging also makes sharing photos a lot easier. After parties don't need to bug everyone to find the photos.

Those are the only reasons I use it.

Cant you already make a group on an email and send that out as a party invitation?

Or Evite? Something that is not available for the whole world to see?

And cant you keep in touch with friends with emails?

  • I have a facebook page that I rarely use anymore. I got that back in 2004 when I was in college. I figured it would be a good way to stay in touch with people and maybe find old friends from high school that I had lost contact with. Turns out I don't really care about staying in touch with most people....if I've stayed in touch with an old friend that means I still hang out with them, which kind of negates the purpose of facebook. I never got motivated to look up old high school friends either. I think I last looked at it 6 months ago when I was "tagged" in someone else's picture.

Was on Facebook, found it a bit stalkerish.
  • I have a myspace. Initially it was to stay in touch with people as I was going through treatment for cancer and keep them current on my progress.

I also use my myspace to stay up on what musical acts I like are doing. I have them all in one place so I don't need to go to each individual fanclub websites all the time. For me, its just easier to me to get bulletins or blog alerts from them in one place.

For me myspace has been helpful in reconnecting with some friends who don't live in the area.

ditto. i found a lot of old friends that i haven't talked to in ages.....good way to reconnect. also keep current on what's going on with my out of area friends (as everyone said)...and third - GREAT for music, imo. love discovering new bands on myspace.

Thats a good point. If I am friends with them, I am talking to them. If not, maybe Ill run into them at some point.

    haha, I just mean argue.

    Playing devil's advocate.

I dont really care one way or another who has it, and I dont look down on people who use either site.

But to me, I dont feel the need to put my face on a page and say, "Here come take a look at me!"

I could understand small business owners and self-employed people.....that actually makes some sense to me.

But for people to keep in touch.....thats what email and cell phones are for...in my world anyway.

To me, its almost like an open faced email page that the entire world could see.

Better make sure your new employer doesnt google you and see your site and find something wrong with it and not hire you.

It was peer pressure that made me get a myspace page. LOL

You can hide your profile if you don't want other people to see. I have a myspace account. I have 12 family/friends and that's it. It's hidden. The sole purpose of it is to easily keep in touch with my friends and family who live in a different country to me. I almost use it as a journal and keep it updated with pictures of what i'm doing, new places for them to see etc.

I know i could probably do all of that by email but i just find it easier. Some of the things are fairly personal so i keep it as a hidden profile. Anyone that has a problem with that shouldn't be googling my name anyway, cause clearly if i wanted them to have access they would already be added as a friend.

But I have found that a lot of people I know can not be found or don't want to be found. For some strange reason I find guys seem more willing to re connect than females and here I thought it would be the other way around. Interesting.

facebook is actually more sociable than phones or emails I find. And you can have a thread between friends rather than getting a new email every time somebody replies... and also someone may just click 'reply' rather than 'reply all' and emails can get messy. Phones are costly and you can't have threads :p

You can set your facebook to private where only your friends can see.

HAHA! My dad and I use myspace to keep in touch with each other. I'm 33 and he's 63. :p

I like the self-expression part. I also like to see what other people are into, see what other cool organizations are out there that I may not otherwise find on my own.

    The band updates are awesome.

Besides, I HATE PHONES, I usually avoid in person contact with people and it's even less formal than personal email. In email, I feel like there should be some worthwhile content, but on myspace or facebook I can send just a quick hello or some silly comment without expecting any sort of response.

    Keep in touch with friends

Find people with the same interests to talk about stuff with

Let people know a little about you

Post pictures to share with friends and family

    Cathartic postings (blogging, etc)

    Time waster

    All good reasons I think.
