a piece of padding around the neck is hardly suits of armour

this is something where a player can die ....hands down

i think throat guards should be a must

but thats what I mean, I know throat guards exist but they aren't mandatory. I don't think the NHL will make them so either.
(the suit of armour thing was a joke :p)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

a player's neck is so exposed, it is amazing this doesn't happen almost every game.

they can offer some kind of neck protection, but i don't think it is something they can make manditory... similar to helmet visors.
  • They won't be manditory, but with the types of cutproof materials that are made today, they should be worn. I played high school hockey back in the early 90's, and neck guards were manditory... they were bulky and sucked, but now with kevlar fibers and stuff, they are so thin and probably not uncomfortable at all.

The neckguard I used will stop a slicing action, but not an impact hit to the throat...which wouuld be nearly impossible to guard for yet still have movement.

If I still played hockey I would wear a full visor and throat guard. I can handle verbal abuse but I don't like pucks in the teeth...my dad has lost all of his front teeth more than once...and it's always the most innocent plays where it happens. Throat guard nowadays are not very obtrusive at all.

Massive Props to Buffalo's Medical People.

First they save a mans ability to live and walk after a vicious football injury.

Then they save a mans life after an artery in his neck is severed.

    Well done Buffalo.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

the question is..... should throat guards be mandatory?

The problem is that most neck guards wouldn't have protected him. The way he extends his head up would have left most of his neck unprotected even with a neck guard.

I think its up to a player's discretion to whether they wear a visor or not so this should be no different.

Aint that the truth? Man, it's amazing that these freak plays happened in one city and a great story that the EMT's were so prepared.
