Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers had his throat accidently slashed by the skate of teammate Olli Jokinen during a game in Buffalo. So far, he's in stable condition.

Anyone watching the game when this happened?

That's actually happened in Buffalo before....Clint (I am not going to spell his name right) Mahlarchuk, a goalie had his neck accidentally slashed some years ago during a game in Buffalo.

Thankfully, it sounds like Zednik is going to be ok. I love hockey, playing and watching, but seeing something like that gives me the shivers. Scary shit indeed.

  • Just saw it on the news. Crazy scary. As someone already mentioned I do remember that goal tender being slashed a few years ago. I think he pulled off his mask and blood came gushing out. Stay well, Zednik.
  • A linesman got slashed in the face the other night as well. It makes me queasy. It sucks, I feel bad for Olli. He must feel horrible.
    Cock Fight.
  • first off, i really hope zedniks alright. i had not heard about this yet.

    Glad he's ok and stable.

I love hockey but sometimes you forget just how dangerous it can be...

  • I almost got up and cheered when the PA announcer announced his condition.

How tough does one have to be to get his throat cut, get up, and skate over to the bench.. hockey players got balls.

    rugby is tough

but they dont have sticks and blades and frozen rubber pucks

not to mention fighting is allowed up to 3 x a game per player

true but rugby players have no padding, studs, scrums and sheer brute force.

I'm a fan of both myself... I loves me a bit of licenced brutality

The worst part was seeing him throw himself against the door trying to open it.
  • Alexi Yashin had his arm slashed a few years back ... but he's a douche so it was kinda funny.

    anything to protect the area
  • If they start introducing neck guards then where does it stop? suits of armour?! :p
Hockey's a dangerous game and players know this going in, it would be ridiculous to start introducing excessive body armour... imagine how restricted they'd be?!
Nah, I don't think anything mandatory will come of it.

Neck guards already exist, and have for a loooong time.

You'll see them a lot in juniors and stuff.
Obviously they aren't mandatory, but they aren't very restrictive or stifling, it's surprising no one wears one.

a piece of padding around the neck is hardly suits of armour

this is something where a player can die ....hands down

i think throat guards should be a must

they are mandatory for small kids

but age doesnt matter when u get a sharp blade across your neck
