    the musical group?

    no pitcher
  • Not official yet, but God I hope so. Out of the AL, the Mets will waste any ability to compete in future trades. Not to mention Boston keeps their prospects, and he doesnt become a mfy.

This is so awesome, he'll light up the NL, and the Mets will still be sucking hind tit to the AL's best.

as long as he doesn't end up in BOSTON i'm a happy camper ,yeahhhhhhhh..
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • Seems the Sox pulled some of their offer off of the table. Just Lester and Crisp and spare parts.

  • they still have to sign him to an extension. they're not gonna give up the farm for one yer. If they do get him, and he stays healthy, he'll win 20+ every year, and strike out 280 every year in the inferior National League.
  • Good news for Yankee fans like myself. I didn't want him on the team for what they wanted to give up.. keep the young guys, I also didn't want to see him in a Red Sux jersey... although we'll still probably see him at least once this year.

  • I agree. Santana's one of my favorite players in baseball, and I would love to have him on the Yankees. But to give up so much, then sign him for $120 mil or more, plus throw another $40-50 million in baseball welfare so Pohlad and other billionaire owners can pocket that money....thanks, but no thanks

It's funny reading the reactions to the trade on the board. 4 and a half years ago, it would be Red Sox fans who would be thanking God that Santana wasn't traded to the Yanks. Now it's vice versa.

I must say it's nice being a fan of the team everyone is chasing for a change. ;)

Didn't want Santana in our division, this will help the Mets a lot, especially by giving their bullpen a rest. Maybe now we'll only be able to run off 4 game winning streaks against them, instead of the 8-game streak we had to take the division last year.

Sorry, had to bring that back up.

I'm thrilled as a Red Sox fan.
I didn't want them to trade Jacoby or Lester.

I'm even more thrilled he is not going to be a Yankee.

  • This will help the Mets obviously, but I wouldn't be too worried if I were a Phillies fan. Johan can't pitch every game.

Front office in Minnesota must be getting ripped for waiting on a deal and then losing out on much better packages from the Yanks (Hughes and Melky) or Sox ( Ellsbury or Lester packages)

Maybe, or were those packages never really on the table? Maybe the Sox and the Yanks were just publicly announcing these offers to keep their fanbases happy while neither had any real intention of trading for Santana.

I think it was pretty well known in NY that the Hughes/Melky package was on the table. The sticking point originally was the 3rd prospect.

Hank Steinbrenner wanted to get it done, Cashman was much more reluctant and wanted to hold on to Hughes and Melky

This is interesting because the Twins didn't get much back at all. (Gammons said that none of those guys would rank in Boston or New York's top ten prospects.) I wonder if there is some genuine concern about his arm after his second half last year.

Basically, the Sox didn't really need him (not enough to give up any front-liners) and the Yanks desperately need to get younger.

yanks and sox offers looked alot better than this.

This is actually considered a much better deal for the Twins than what Boston and NYY had offered.

How? There isn't a blue-chipper in the bunch. The Twins over-played their hand...assuming you believe the Sox and Yanks' offers were legit.

Damn Twins. Hate to see him come to the NL. Now the F'n Mets will be frontrunners in the NL, by far.

They say both Humber and Mulvey have a high ceiling and Gomez is a burner. Guerra is a big boy with a lot of good stuff, but is really young, so they need to be slow with him.

The yanks and sox didn't really need santana, and they thought they could get him for cheap since he was disgruntled with the twins. I'm sure the yanks weren't wanting to give up much of anything. I don't know what boston may have really been offering.

I'm a little torn on the trade, since my Braves will be facing ol Johan quite often. However, it is a nice consolation that the Mets have no arms left on the farm. And it will be even more rewarding when whip them like we always do :D.

USA Today believes the Mets have landed Johan Santana from the Twins for Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber.

A contract extension would still have to be worked out, so even if it is officially agreed to, this will likely linger through Friday at least. It's a pretty disappointing day for Twins fans. Both packages being discussed by the Red Sox and Yankees during the winter meetings seemed more attractive to us. Gomez and Guerra are big-time talents, but Gomez lacks plate discipline and might not fit in the top half of the lineup and an awful lot could go wrong before Guerra even sniffs the majors. Mulvey and Humber are third starters at best and probably more like fourths. It's a whole lot better than losing Santana for draft picks next winter, but we'd have taken a Phil Hughes or Jacoby Ellsbury package over this. Source: USATODAY.com Jan. 29 - 4:29 pm et
