  • I've been training for three years in BJJ. It's a really beautiful and peaceful art that plays much more to technique than strength.

I find it makes me much less angry and much less willing to be violent. Also, it's great for your health.

Search different gyms in the area and sit in and watch a class or two in each before you decide which is right for you. Make sure the people training there aren't bullies or jerks and that they go over techniques instead of just throwing you to the wolves.

BJJ is a more-than-worthwhile experience; it's like physical poetry.

BJJ has been my favorite part of watching MMA so far.... it would be fun to give it try....

a while ago, i was researching some kickboxing gyms, which also offered some BJJ and MMA lessons. i wish i had someone to go with though.... when it comes to exercise, i need lots of moral support! :o:)

I have been studying Jui-jitsu for a few years now and let me just say it is one of the best work outs you can ever imagine. As someone already stated you are taught discipline and will end up being far less willing to resort to violence. My training, I can't speak for others, starts of with stretching followed by about 30 minutes of high paced cardio. Depending on your level you would then undergo some instruction, for begineers most of the class would be instruction. For more advanced students it would be about 30 minutes of instruction followed by pairing up and sparing.

I would suggest that if you are interested in taking classes you also accompany it by taking either kick boxing or muay thai. I take muay thai and the two art forms work beautifully together and muay thai work out really kick your ass. I miss it like crazy, hurt my knee a few months ago and just had surgery so no classes for me for about another 6 months.

obviously i would be a begineer ,,,so it wouldnt be wise to just take bjj ?
i understand muay thai or something else would help ,but is it stupid to just start with bjj ?

Jui-jitsu you can ease into I find. I was completely and utterly out of shape when I started taking it. It was painfull at first. Your body will ache in ways you couldn't fathom. The only advice I can give is to take it seriously and be very focused and determined. If your heart is into it you will be able to work past the pain. Within a month of starting I was taking 3 classes a week, I was hooked and no matter how much my body hurt I just couldn't stop going.

I just started with jui-jitsu because the owner of the dojo told me I would be better off. Muay thai was far more physically demanding, even the beginner courses than BJJ. After about 3-4 months of BJJ, and some hopkido, I started muay thai. You don't need one to learn the other but I found BJJ conditioned me and I was then able to keep up with the physical demands of muay thai.

Also you can take BJJ without learning another art form. I just find the combination of the two to be great as far as self defense goes.

Best of luck. I am so fucking envious of you right now. I can't wait to get back. I'm sitting here pondering how the hell am I going to go 6 months without taking a class.

Yeah BJJ is seriously badass. I think it's even taught in Army Ranger school now.

I took different styles of Karate for years and have had my fair share of street fighting experiences, but I am terrified of running into a BJJ fighter. I would be on the ground in the blink of an eye.

I'm thinking about doing Jiu Jitsu as well, but I'm not sure yet. Right now, my preference goes to Aikido.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!
