differently than if say Obama tried to use a PJ song without permission. that is my point. I fully understand why, just be respectful about it. Take the road the 3rd person that co-wrote that song did. That is all.

If I wrote a song that Obama loved and used, I would be honored that someone enjoyed my song enough to use it. I would then tell him to stop.

of course it would be different. because the band supports the ideals obama is presenting, not the ideals dubya or mccain are. it is THEIR music. they are entitled.

what is "more respectful" than a cease and desist letter? that's what they sent. the third guy didn't seem to have a problem with the politics. that's his choice. but where does it stop? if al-quaeda wants to start playing john lennon tunes as a recruitment tactic, john lennon should just say "im honored that murderers like my music"? if i have a kick ass new car, should i be able to take any music i want to put in my commercials? i mean shit, the artist should just be "honored" that i like their music and want to use it in my commercial. right?
    and like that... he's gone.

Heart could sue if they wanted. You can't use music not in the public domain just whenever you want for essentially commercial purposes--and selling politics seems to me to be a commercial purpose.

uh, yeah. exactly what I meant. have a good night :)
  • Does anyone agree with me that Jackson Brown and Heart are being extremely petty?

    no.
Do you think U2 would have an issue with McCain using their song like Barack does.

    yes.
    Because they aren't partisan hacks.

are they not? never heard a kind word from u2 about any republican.

Agreed. But does anyone agree with me that Jackson Brown and Heart are being extremely petty? Do you think U2 would have an issue with McCain using their song like Barack does? I doubt it. Because they aren't partisan hacks.
I think it goes a bit deeper than that. Legally (as someone has already said), as long as they are operating from a venue that had paid the afformentioned blanket fee, they are free to use any song that ASCAP licenses without committing any kind of copyright infringements.

Do you really think that if Heart were McCain supporters that they would have any problem with him using their song? Of course not. They would be like 'hells yes!! That's my song.

Covering another artists song at say a gig night, is totally different to using it in an enviroment where you are trying to influence people and running for presidency of the United States.

Now, if heart think he's a tool, well that's a completely different scenario. Legally (as long as the fee is paid), there's nothing they can do, but as a musician it would absolutely piss me off if someone i didn't believe in, used my music as a way to deliver a message. The thought of McCain using one of my tunes makes me want to throw up in my mouth. Ugh.
  • I feel for Ann and Nancy. If that were my song, I would be mortified.

way to completey ignore the point. come on, try to defend your stance... musicians should just be honored when someone wants to use their music and, like heart's guitarist, say "everyone wins." that was what you said, right?
    and like that... he's gone.

    yes.

Bono praised Bush for African aid. If you read Bono's cover story in Rolling Stone a few years ago, the interviewer brought up Bush four different times and Bono didn't bite. I'm sure Bono disagrees with Bush a lot, but he isn't a little bitch about like the rest of the liberals.

If you think playing Barracuda at a campaign rally will result in one vote in the election, you are crazy. That is why Heart is being petty and ridiculous.

Good for them. Maybe Palin could use the song "I'm a bitch":/
This song might be more appropriate ;):P

  • It is kinda funny that for a group of people who want to get passed the political bullshit and partisan bickering, they sure do like to take part in the partisan bullshit.
  • Jackson Browne is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... hardly D list.

And hell yes they have a reason to be pissed off, I'm glad to hear that they aren't letting their work support something they vehemently oppose.

  • Everytime the Republicans use a recorded rock song, it doesn't matter whose, really, people freak out. It'd be safer if they just assumed that all musicians think they are fascists, and not use anyone's music.

Truly ... This is getting old.

That isn't even the issue. Its about integrity, principle and association. It is in no way petty to not want your work to be associated with ideas you strongly disagee with whether it results in votes or not.

no partisan bullshit about it. if obama used a george strait song and george strait took offense and asked him to stop, i'd be 100% on his side.

pretty much. 2 groups took 2 different stands on that issue and I side with the one. That is all. Petty. The Heart sisters just seemed to be really annoyed by it which just seemed ridiculous to me. Most disagree it seems. Perhaps they weren't really annoyed and just wanted it stopped. The whole thing was just so predictable how it played out and I was just commenting on it.

Isn't that pretty much all they did? The headline was that they lashed out... the story was that they sent a cease and desist letter, and didn't make a very big deal about it at all.
Yeah, my initial reaction was that they did seem to make a big deal about it. Perhaps they just didn't.
