I saw my last dead show one nite. And the next nite saw my first PJ show. I've always felt the connection between the two. I also don't like the term jamily. lol

    chicago?

when jerry died i basically found a new band to follow, shortly after. i had given up hope that there was ever gonna be something that was THAT good. glad i was proved wrong.

jamily? call it what you want. names don't matter to me. i got over what a name was about when i found out what the grateful dead was really all about. i take no stock in names/titles.

i've attended GD and PJ concerts and all i have to say is...

PJ fans, where's the smoke? :D
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

there are a lot of similarities between the business models and the way in which the fans are devoted to the band.

The bands' approach to playing live is similar, except that PJ is a bit more professional on stage, and there is a LOT less improvision.

There are a lot less people coming to PJ shows just to be part of the scene, or to simply do hard drugs. It happens, but not to the extent that it did with the dead.

That and the musical experience is TOTALLY different.

Jamily schamily, just a media tag and it dont mean a thing.
  • I don't like the term "Jamily" at all. I'll never use it.

This is a pretty good article over-all, but I get the sense that the author still doesn't quite "get it". That's okay though. It's always nice to see positive articles.

Yea saw Saturday's dead show in Chicago. Then the next nite saw my first PJ show at Milwaukee's summerfest. For a while after I was pissed that I had missed Jerry's last show. But overtime I feel into PJ and the rest is history. I still miss Jerry very much.

In a lot of ways Pearl Jam has filled that void in my life as well.
I stopped seeing the dead in 93-too painful and I never liked it as much after brent died. Became a PJ fan around 94-95.

I'm not sure who coined the expression "Jamily." But the first time I ever saw it used was in the Rumor Pit after Roskilde:

So it's been in use for at least 8 years now.

The 90's were really bad for the dead. They couldn't stop this huge machine they had created. Too many people were being supported by them touring.

Same here, wasn't the same experience after Brent died (although Hornsby was a great fit).
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Mine as well starting in 1982, and indeed, at times, the people were more entertaining than the band.

And to me, summer just aint the same without GD shows.

Oh man 1982 well I was really young and not into the dead yet. lol :D

Yea I was just getting into seeing the dead and figuring out what it all ment. I had decided that following them was what I would have done. After Jerry's passing I was lost on what to do and what music to enjoy. Then I fell back into PJ and since then its been just fine. :)

same here except I had a three year voyage into hip hop and "Indie" bands in the early 90s

I Still go to the Ratdog shows whenever I can-Really good time

PJ-my first show was Randalls 2 (damn TM boycott!) and I had backstage passes. Not the same since.

I never could get into Phish. I tried but I thought of them as a rip off to the dead. I never and still don't get their music.

    Still sucks Jerry is gone.

This is very true. I find it very sad more than anything, people tried many many times to get him help, but he refused. When I think of Jerry, I think
    "damn shame"

But my brain cells are glad he is gone! Im just glad I was able to see a whole bunch of shows in the eleven years I went to dead and jerry shows

Totally agree on the Jerry comment. It's really too bad that he (and Brent) couldn't escape their addictions. A lot of people got mad at Phils comments on the 60 minutes interview, but I think they were right on:

“It’s one of the biggest tragedies or the biggest bring-downs of my whole life, to know that he loved the drug more than he loved us,” says Lesh. “I felt like I had mourned him already when I got the call, and I had been mourning him for years. He was gone for years.”

As for Ratdog, yeah they are a great live band. There are a few Weir songs that I can go the rest of my life hearing though, (Lazy Lightning --> Supplication, Weather Report --> Let it Grow).
