From someone who spent too much time on Dead tour, does anyone else hate the reference ''Jamily"; I obviously hate it.

The term jamily may be gooby, but its a nice article, and very positive. Nothing wrong IMO with band copying the sucessful methodology made famous by the GD.

I saw my last dead show one nite. And the next nite saw my first PJ show. I've always felt the connection between the two. I also don't like the term jamily. lol

I never once saw someone at a Dead show ask someone to stop getting high, or turn them in. Lots of similarities in merchandising, ticketing, loyal fanbase, varied setlists etc... The big difference will always be that at Dead shows, everyone was cool.

I caught 5 dead shows from 94 and 95 and I agree with you. I was met all these cool people that welcomed me into the world of the dead music. Or that's when I got on the bus. lol :)

Who the fuck came up with that name? I've been around for a while and it sounds like some douchebag at the mag made that up. Everyone just calls it 10C, etc.

Thank you for posting the EW link . As for use of the term Jamily, I could care less what we're called. As long as the vibe remains the same ;at shows, when we're hanging out, being socially conscious, on The Pit, etc.. ; it's all good. Don't bogart the vibe, pass it on!

That lame term "Jamily" creeps me out. Like we're a bunch of zombies who are gonna move to some south american commune and all commit mass suicide together. How about we are just dedicated fans who stood by the band when they were no longer the "hip, trendy" band to like and saw something deeper than these jerk off bandwagoners.

    chicago?

when jerry died i basically found a new band to follow, shortly after. i had given up hope that there was ever gonna be something that was THAT good. glad i was proved wrong.

jamily? call it what you want. names don't matter to me. i got over what a name was about when i found out what the grateful dead was really all about. i take no stock in names/titles.

i've attended GD and PJ concerts and all i have to say is...

PJ fans, where's the smoke? :D
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

there are a lot of similarities between the business models and the way in which the fans are devoted to the band.

The bands' approach to playing live is similar, except that PJ is a bit more professional on stage, and there is a LOT less improvision.

There are a lot less people coming to PJ shows just to be part of the scene, or to simply do hard drugs. It happens, but not to the extent that it did with the dead.

That and the musical experience is TOTALLY different.

Jamily schamily, just a media tag and it dont mean a thing.
  • I don't like the term "Jamily" at all. I'll never use it.

This is a pretty good article over-all, but I get the sense that the author still doesn't quite "get it". That's okay though. It's always nice to see positive articles.

Yea saw Saturday's dead show in Chicago. Then the next nite saw my first PJ show at Milwaukee's summerfest. For a while after I was pissed that I had missed Jerry's last show. But overtime I feel into PJ and the rest is history. I still miss Jerry very much.

In a lot of ways Pearl Jam has filled that void in my life as well.
I stopped seeing the dead in 93-too painful and I never liked it as much after brent died. Became a PJ fan around 94-95.

I'm not sure who coined the expression "Jamily." But the first time I ever saw it used was in the Rumor Pit after Roskilde:

    http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/PearlJam/rumorpit/pit42.html

So it's been in use for at least 8 years now.

The 90's were really bad for the dead. They couldn't stop this huge machine they had created. Too many people were being supported by them touring.

Same here, wasn't the same experience after Brent died (although Hornsby was a great fit).
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
