I have ben working for a major spporting goods chain for over 2 years (named after a part of the male anatomy) now.Recently I got promoted to a mgmt.position, this is my 2nd promotionand I've also gotten several awards since working there.Being in this new position allows me to have acess to certain areas.well low and behold H.R. decided to do a background check. about 3 years ago I got busted and charged with simple poss. This was and is the only thing on my rec. and this is considerd a misdimenor in the state I live in. So my loss prevention manager has placed me on susp since last tuesday.Tomorow I will find out if I still have a job or not. also I have honest since day 1 with upper mang. I have also completed 2 years of probation and a substsnce abuse class without any dirty drug screens. I know this is a politicle thread but any feedback will help.

Considering we've had past and a future Presidents that have smoked and snorted something illegal. I think you should be ok, then again your company could be conservatives.

    Good Luck

drug laws in the US are the exact opposite of what they need to be...if drug prevention is their goal.

Drugs are a terrible thing. Look at the numbers.

And this is from memory (they are probably worse now)

    in 2000.

250,000 dead per year from Tobacco (not including second hand smoke related deaths)
50,000 dead from alcohol and alcohol related accidents

    those are legal.

some 3000 dead from ALL ILLEGAL drugs combined.

Of 60 million admitted pot smokers in the US- 0 overdoses.

    yeah drugs are bad mmkay.
  • What you are going through is total bullshit. You should be judged on your work and the rest should be none of their business.
I would contact your state's labor board and a lawyer if it goes any further. Good luck to you man. I hope it works out for you.
  • Loss prevention manager?

Sounds like he's the first to go if you need to cut some fat...

    For Tobacco, it's now over 400,000 deaths/year:
    http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/tobacco_related_mortality.htm

    For alcohol-induced deaths, it's over 21,000:
    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr56/nvsr56_10.pdf

Keep in mind, that's for alcohol-induced deaths alone. It doesn't include accidental deaths caused by things like car accidents, fires, firearms, etc. where alcohol use was involved. When you factor in those things, the number probably quadruples.

    For drug-induced deaths, it's over 33,000:
    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr56/nvsr56_10.pdf

However, most of these deaths are caused by legally-prescribed drugs, not the illegal ones. I don't think the CDC releases mortality info specifically for illegal drugs because the number is so low in comparison....I'm not sure if it's 3000, but that sounds close from what I remember reading. It's well under 10,000.

I'd also add that I don't think there are any documented cases of people overdosing on non-poisonous mushrooms, plants containing lsa, and many many other substances that are both very safe and illegal.

It's interesting how the CDC presents the statistics.

that is crap ... it's further proof of how the US has become more and more an intolerant country ... the christian extremists have taken over ... i dunno if you have a human rights commission but that's about the only thing i can think of to help you ...

What utter crap. Hope you keep your job!

Perhaps some of these narrow minded nerds need to look at drug stats for other countries. Bearing in mind you can but a joint in a coffee shop in Holland you'd think they'd be drug addled.

The other stats in this thread for alcohol and tobacco say it all.

the question is, did you lie on your resume?

It's irrelevant imo. People are building up criminal records for ridiculous reasons, and it unfairly affects their job security. It's one thing to not hire or fire someone for failing a drug test, but it's different than discriminating based on a previous conviction. I mean, if I owned a business and some kid came to the interview half-stoned I wouldn't hire him. If I was running a machine shop, and he failed a drug test, I might not hire him. But I don't think he should have a criminal record for that.

that's good news. In no way should someone be judged by what they do on their own time. If you can do your job as well as anyone else, that's all that should matter.

Hell lets take it one step further. If someone can do their job baked as well or better than someone else who is sober, should they be fired?
Hello, I love you. Won't you tell me your name?

I wouldn't want to work with someone who used drugs. Not only is he a danger to me but also himself.

Now in this case if you lied I would fire you too. If you were honest I wouldn't have a problem as long as the use had stopped.

If you worked at a major sporting good chain,
you would be worried about a pothead being a danger to himself, AND to YOU?

What do you think he would do,
come in high, mistake you for a bear, and try to shoot you?

If I opened it now would you not understand?
