Joe the Plumber does foreign policy

Joe the Plumber now says that an Obama presidency would mean death to Israel. He has no foreign policy experience, he offers nothing to back this up and when confronted with Obama's actual position regarding Israel he simply says that you can't believe politicians.

It's laughable and tragic that this is what the McCain campaign has come to, putting this guy out there on the stump and letting him talk foreign policy in front of a camera.

Even Shepard Smith seems exasperated. At the end of the interview he says, "Man, it just gets frightening sometimes"

"... Barack Obama has said repeatedly, time after time, that there is nothing more important than the United States's friendship with Israel and that the US will back up Israel every moment of every day if and when he becomes president of the US..."

That's the really scary part, if you ask me, not some Joe Nobody who said something.

    Change

It's better Obama should wash his hands of Israel and allow a second Holocaust? Or maybe the U.S. should ignore Israel and have them shoot off a nuke they've long been rumored to have?

Obama is in favor of two states -- one Palestinian, one Israeli. What's the better option?

If Obama really thinks that nothing is more important than US friendship with Israel and if he truly intends to back up Israel every moment of every day, I'd say that disturbing, yes.

Israel is a democracy in the middle of a decidedly undemocratic area of the world. They do some bad things to Palestinians and vice versa.

Diplomacy works on two levels: the outward displays and behind-the-scenes contact. It would be nice if Obama could finish what Clinton and others started and finally work out some compromise between both sides (if that's even possible).

Where would this second holocaust come from? I think it's important to note that Israel is not doing it's part to improve the situation. Fact is they are doing everything to increase the tensions.

Israel has also been the worst friend America has. They are also killing many many people violating human rights everyday.

It is indeed very dangerous and scary to hear someone say that they support Israel that much, infact at all considering it's actions.

In the same way it would scary to hear people supporting South Africa during apartheid or Germany with the Nazis.

Now we can also talk about levels of destrcution, but the point is they are/were all serious injustices.

Clinton never came close to bringing any peace, that so called "good deal" was not good at all. If you saw the proposed map you would see that it was in favour of Israel.

The media played it like Israel and America did everything it could and it was the Palestinians that screwed it up. It's a misconception, one that's reiterated far too often when speaking about that time during the Clinton years.

Just saying that Israel does some bad things is playing down what's going on.

is that true that mccain's campaign put him on tv to discuss foreign policy?

I agree. Israel has committed many despicable acts either in self defense or preemptively. It's a bad, bad situation over there. I haven't seen any of it in person, but I've seen and read about it.

Israel puts politicians in a tough situation, as well. The pro-Israel lobby in America is very strong, as it should be given the history of oppression Jews have suffered through all over the world. But that lobby also wants politicians to turn a blind eye to the illegal things Israel does.

As I wrote earlier, it's partly a diplomatic ploy (hopefully): Offer outward signs of complete agreement while working behind the scenes to address problems.

Absolutely they were, but we supported Israeli statehood after WWII. In fact, we were the biggest backer of Israeli statehood. We seem to be irrevocably tied to Israel. I think Obama needs to have an honest discussion with both sides to try to work out some sort of peace -- such as it would be -- that could end all this death. Let's not forget, though, that both sides are killing each other. It seems as if it's a chicken-or-egg situation as to which group started it.

I don't believe the Palestinians were alone in screwing it up. There is plenty of blame to go around on this issue, and that includes the U.S.

k cool, fair enough...except for the 'chicken or the egg' part. But i'll get back to that when I have more time.
  • I watched that interview with shep Smith live, and was amazed. An hour later, Neil cavuto had "Tito the Builder" on. He's a hispanic Joe the Plumber, and just as dumb. Cavuto, who brings in all sorts of nutjobs if theys upport McCain and the GOP, was dumbfounded. At the end of the interview, he sarcastically muttered---"that went real well....."

It's a sad state of affairs when media stoop to these levels. That is awful journalism and the only reason they have done this, that I can conceive, is that they actually have an audience for this type of garbage!!!

Are you not familiar with FOX News? If the morning show would've interviewed Joe they probably would have fallen all over themselves to agree, especially the weather man.

What's the better option? How about looking at it objectively, instead of choosing one side to be your best friend, whom you will support every day and every moment.

I typed it before, but I'll do it again: 1. It's incredibly tough for a candidate to win without support from Jewish people, especially in Fla.; 2. Diplomacy has overt and covert levels and exterior support isn't always the same as what goes on behind closed doors.

It's also been U.S. foreign policy to support Israel since we helped Jews get their own state after WWII. Like I wrote before, I hope Obama (if he wins) really takes on Israel for the way it has dealt with Palestinians and I hope it leads to a more tenable peace in that part of the world.

McCain-Palin bring his name up at rallies when it's time to talk economy. He's the supposed everyman, like Tito-the-builder and some-other-name-and-whatever-they-do.

McCain and his handlers really think this planted example of the middle class rally hits home with voters. I guess it does with the GOP base, but I don't know how much traction he gives them with undecideds. I'd like to think people can see through the charade, but I doubt it most times.

Joe the Plumber represents exactly what the McCain and Palin camps have become, a scam on everything that is decent about the American people.

How pathetic the Palin/McCain campaign has become that he would let this so called Joe the Plumber represent his campaign at speaking engagements. A man without principles. A man who doesn't pay his taxes. A man who lied about starting up a small business. A man who was and is nothing more than a scam artist.

    1. This only shows how fucked up the system is and how Obama goes along with it.

Do you honestly think he will take on Israel objectively when he has already promised his support and he stresses the importance of their friendship.

Israel is a terrorist state and the US supports it.

Just think we could possibly be electing a VP candidate who has the same amount of foreign policy experience as Joe the Plumber.

Where the hell is Walter Sobchak when you need him??

Someone seriously needs to tell this jackoff Joe "The Unlicensed Tax Evading Plumber" that he's out of his fucking element.

This idiot should stick to un-clogging toilets and accept that his 15 minutes of fame have long passed him by.

This guy is quite possibly the biggest douchebag in America right now.
  • What kills me is that the McCain camp is legitimizing this guy... It's another example of a campaign that has spun out of control. Between the stories of Palin going rogue, the infighting and Joe the plumber on the stump making idiotic comments, Rick Davis and the co-chairs have lost total control over their campaign at the worst possible time. Add this to the fact that there is no organized ground game, the outcome doesn't look good for McCain.
