WESTFIELD, Mass. — An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

Boy shoots himself at Massachusetts gun show

His father gave permission for his son to shoot this weapon, I'm glad no one else was killed.

    It was a GUN SHOW.
My first thought: "Why was the gun loaded with ammunition?"

    It was a GUN SHOW.
My first thought: "Why was the gun loaded with ammunition?"

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club, police Lt. Lawrence Vallierpratte said.

The event ran in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training

"It's all legal & fun — No permits or licenses required!!!!" reads the ad, posted on the club's Web site.

Apparently you could shoot your weapon of choice at a range I presume while at this gun show.

  • That poor kid...

What was his dad (and the instructor) thinking?

I grew up in a family that hunted, and I learned to shoot at a young age, but I can't imagine putting a semi-auto or fully auto weapon in an 8 year old's hands.

    ...enough said :(
    how very very sad.

  • What good can come from guns? seriously, all they bring to the table is bad shit, so when 100 people let their kid shoot a semi automatic, 1 child is gonna become that statistic. Grown men can't be trusted with guns, let alone kids.
I wish for a world where people get as much pleasure out of giving strangers 100 dollar bills instead of shooting off a couple of rounds.

There's unfortunately a lot of dummies out there that have both guns and children. I went to school with one and the running theme among some common friends is that it's a matter of time before he shoots his own eye out. I hear ya, Oil as well. Too many stupid people who are careless.

Guns don't kill people! 8 year old kids do!

    Or something.

I believe the gun show people are going to have a lot of blame too. It shouldn't be possible for an 8 year old kid to kill himsely with an automatic weapon at a show.

But yeah, if I had a son, he wouldn't be shooting uzis.

  • It was definitely a poor decision on the father's part, but I saw a video of him speaking on the news and he seemed like a good dad and it was just a terrible accident. I can't imagine how he must feel.

I agree. I'm am one of the resident gun nuts here, and this is beyond defending. I've been to a few gun shows here and they don't allow loaded weapons on the premises. There is certainly not a booth where weapons, automatic or not, can be fired. It is beyond comprehension that the show would allow minors (8 years old!) to just grab the weapon in full-auto mode and pull the trigger. Monumental stupidity.

  • So let me get this straight... An 8 YEAR OLD was shooting an UZI SUBMACHINE GUN at a gun fair with HIS DAD'S PERMISSION?!

What the hell is the world coming to?:mad:
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • I'll never understand the pro-gun stance in regards to Uzi's. I get that some believe it is their constitutional right to bear arms to protect themselves and I can get the sportsmanship of hunting with a rifle, but seriously - how is there any argument that can justify owning an Uzi if you are not a part of the military or policing.

How sad for this young boy. It is a shame that the politicizing and the greed of an issue - has led to loaded Uzi's being shown off at shows with kids. Disgusting.

Yeah, I posted a link about this on the gun thread yesterday. It just inspired some people to brag about their arsenals.

Regarding whether or not an 8-year-old should have been allowed to shoot an Uzi submachine gun, I'm pretty sure it was all legal. I think people tend to think if something's legal it's safe. I'm not saying I would let my kid do that, legal or not, but I question why this is considered acceptable. :(

Amazing. The police chief is the head of the machine gun show. The 40+ year member of the club resigned from the board because of his opposition to the machine gun show. The dad must have some level of intelligence being a doctor. And yet there was a monumental degree of oxygen deprivation happening. The adults appear to have completely lost their minds.

I know guns quite well, my favorite is or was the M60 I once could break it down and put it together blindfolded.

I just want to one thing what is the purpose or thrill of having a 8 year old shoot a uzi?

    Peace

I'm not a parent, but allowing an 8-year-old child to shoot an uzi seems incredibly irresponsible. The D.A. considers filing charges.

No, it wasn't a gun show, it was a range that held an open shoot and invited the public to participate. But all this aside, I agree this was a very stupid idea and hopefully will never be allowed again, parental supervision or not.

i see no place for humor in this conversation.

i am fucking tired of hearing of the effects of the idiotic tendencies that run thru this country. the notion of a 8 year old kid firing an Uzi shouldn't even be imaginable. i honestly assumed it wasn't possible for kids to fire machine guns in this state. apparently Gov. Mitt Romney signed some anti-assault rifle bill, but there was a loophole. always a fucking loophole. but what's worse is the people who look for these loopholes and take advantage of them. i don't understand why a grown man would think it's fun to fire a machine gun, but a grown man taking a picture of his 8 year old son firing a machine gun?!? that should be a completely impossible scenario. and i heard that this boy had been firing guns since he was 5. WHAT THE FUCK?!

simply scoffing at the idiots does nothing for me. i am SICK TO DEATH of the idiots getting their way in this country. the good people need to fight back and make this country a safe and noble place to live in.

i also read in the paper that gun violence was to be expected on Halloween in the city (Boston). last year, 3 kids died... and this year it's predicted to be worse.

when are we going to learn that guns make us less safe?????
