Recession Proof Jobs

* Education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has historically shown teaching to be relatively recession-proof. But demographics are important: High-growth areas like the Sun Belt offer much better prospects than the Rust Belt.

* Energy. "This is a major issue for the global economy, and jobs related to oil and gas, alternative energy and even nuclear are likely to see strong growth," Challenger said.

* Health care. Almost half the 30 fastest growing occupations are concentrated in health services -- including medical assistants, physical therapists, physician assistants, home health aides, and medical records and health information technicians -- according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

* International business. "If you have a strong knowledge of other cultures, and an ability to work in another country, you'll find plenty of opportunities," according to John Challenger. "If you're first generation Chinese, with business skills and Chinese language skills, you're in good shape.

* Environmental sector. There is a huge and growing industry geared to combat global warming. "Not only will professionals with skills in sustainability issues be in demand through the end of the decade, we are likely to shortages of professionals with 'green' skills," said Rona Fried, president of sustainablebusiness.com, a networking service for sustainable businesses.

* Security. "Crime doesn't stop during a recession, and police officers, port security specialists and international security experts will continue to be in demand," Challenger emphasized.

Recession Proof Jobs luckly being in the health field I'm not doing too badly. Oh *Joe the Plummer* is a recession proof job always work in that field.

yes, thankfully... its a statutory requirement to have this dept within our government... and i'm the only person who does my job so its not like they can streamline.

but thankfully i fell into this and its re-assuring to know i'll have my employment in this troubled time.

I'm an economist. So, in a way, recessions are very good for my industry because it's somewhat counter-cyclical in terms of demand.

In other words, when things get bad the media turns to economists.

It's amazing in troubling times how some jobs become more valued indeed. BTW why does cost 100 million to demolish Wembely Stadium?

  • I manage a box office in an arena. And while the economy is hurting ticket sales & events across the board, we still have a ton of events onsale. It would take a very prolonged recession to affect my job.

I think the common belief is that show business is very recession proof. So even when people are totally broke they will go see things like movies and concerts as a form of escapism. I think from what I read movie ticket sales were very strong during the great depression.

I agree people do seek escapism to quench their worries. I just received tickets to an ACDC concert at $92.50 a piece, this is all for my 12 yr old daughter who wants to see them with her close male friend.

I can't say about him what she says he is. :)

My boss is footing the bill.

All you have to do is look at entertainment ticket sales (in particular movies tickets) to see the economy can't be in that bad of shape.

I am in the safest place possible for a recession. Namely the public Labour and Welfare agency of Norway (NAV). The more unemployment etc there is, the more there is for us to do as an organization. We got a healthy increase in the government budget proposal for the coming year, so I think I'm pretty safe. The Norwegian economy in general won't take as hard a hit as other places. We were at 1,6% unemployment and record labour immigration when this hit.

    Peace

As for me I work for a extremely wealthy family with not much to worry about being laid off. Lots of travel on their plane and yacht between Palm Beach FL(6 months), DC(6 months) and time in Martha's Vineyard/NYC.

However, if I continue to do my job well, he'll stay alive for much longer than he had ever hoped.

I work for a property management company. Whether or not the occupancy is high or low, the property still require managing. So I'm not directly affected by these hard times, thank god, or science....whichever you believe in.

Although our management fees are based on the income each property generates. While people are losing houses etc., I wonder if our occupancy will go up because more people will need to rent. Or if people losing jobs etc., will lower our occupancy. I'm a believer in things sort of evening out....but I guess we'll see.

Of course military jobs hardly fluctuate in response to economic conditions. Growing up as a Navy brat during the 90's, I didn't even realize there was a recession going on. Job security is just a given for career military people.
  • the entertainment industry does pretty well in recessions for some reason, so i'm ok for now.
