Thug does not mean black. From Merriam-Webster's dictionary.

THUG – a brutal ruffian or assassin.

News to me. I didn't know it was reserved for the black population. I guess I can change it out for 'criminal' then.

You sure about that, well then I gather that you think Obama is a thug. That's like my boss today said about a black person who got off the elevator..."That looks like the tipical thief" I said why? he says he says "he's quiet and he moves fast" I said really or is it because he's black. He never said a word after that.

How about Todd Bertuzzi? I have no idea what about his life off of the ice, but on the ice, he committed the most dangerous, violent cowardly act I have ever seen in sports and now Steve Moore will never play again. And the NHL gave him...17 games.

And I know hockey players are white, but speaking of thugs...The shit they do on the ice, the way fighting is encouraged. There has to be a word for that (and it can't be thug, right?)

As for the expense, NHL is about as overpriced as the NBA anyway.

For both sports, I look at college first. Lot less (white word for thuggary) going on in college hockey.

(Truthfully, for pros I like the NHL better as the NBA is just so boring)

As for these 80 jobs, I wish Kevin McHale would make the list.

you really believe that Buzz. hit was the worst thing you have seen in sports WOW. i have seen worse hits in football that were worse, even this year. also, fighting is not encouraged in hockey but it still is a part of teh game.

I won't be going to any games either they're TOOO damn expensive. I'd rather attend a hockey game instead.

Economy is hitting everybody will you skip out on any professional games?

    Peace

Aren't most hockey games more expensive then basketball?

    It won't change my habits....yet.

He came from behind him (like a fucking coward) and drove his head into the ice, knocking him out cold. It may not have been the hardest hit ever in sports and it may not have had the worst result (sometimes in football guys get paralyzed), but I have no recollection of anything dirtier, more cowardly and more reckless than that. While I am not a fan of the fighting in hockey ("part of the game" is encouragement), at least if Burtuzzi would have squared off with him (a fight, not an assault), there'd be some respect in that.

Wow. No. First off (to the prior posts), I did not mean Webster's, but the vernacular of the day. Secondly, I mean it's used as "bad dude" or whatever, but primarily in reference to blacks.

With the exception of the unbelievably expensive courtside seats in the NBA, I think the ticket prices are about the same. And the pricey courtside seats make some sense, as the views that close in hockey cost you a view of half the rink. So there are no comparably good seats there.

I agree. Basketball has just gone downhill as a sport since guys like Jordan retired... for the second time.

The thugs are what turn me off, well those two announcers too, but mainly it is the thugs. There are some in other sports but not as many as the NBA.

    Name these thugs please

I can't stand professional basketball anymore. This is what happens when you raise ticket prices through the roof, to the point where it's too expensive to take your kids to see a game. All major sports are guilty of this and that is why I watch college sports. In college at least these kids are playing their asses off, not that they don't in the pros, but it is 3x cheaper to go see a game and sometimes far more thrilling.

ps. I agree with unsung that the NBA is crap now. I used to love basketball, watching people like Jordan, Pippen, Ewing, Bird, Magic, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, John Stockton, David Robinson, etc… These athletes where professional and they did what was best for the team. Now a days you have players who only care about how much money they make or how many touches they get a game. They bitch and complain if they don't play enough minutes or if another team mate got the ball in the last minute of the game. It's like watching a bunch of individuals on the court instead of a team. The quality has surely slipped in the NBA.

Name these players you speak of please, and in terms of quality, did you watch last season?

No more than hockey? I'll take my chances and lay my money on that bet.

Give me one hockey player, any hockey player in the NHL that is as bad as Ron Artest. Or Latrell Sprewell. Or Dennis Rodman, Jayson Williams, Kobe, Shawn Kemp, Jason Kidd, Isaiah Rider... the list goes on.

Only 3 of those guys are even in the league anymore. And one of them is not guilty of a certain "rear entry" crime.

Actually the NBA right now is a pretty clean sport. The Major stars are all pretty good guys.

Dwight Howard, Lebron, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Greg Oden, Deron Williams etc . . .

At least the NBA doesn't have Pac Man Jones & Baseball's steroid problem.

Just like the news, they only focus on the bad boys who gets themselves in trouble. ;)

I think the NFL is by far the worst of all sports when it comes to questionable characters of their behaviors.

I'll add KG, Ray Allen, Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier and Derek Fisher are good characters in the game as well.

They're far more in the NFL with thuggery in their past. I haven't been to a basketball game since Jordan was here in DC and that was $40 back then for nose bleed. Hockey tickets for a Bruins game down in Florida was $30-$35 and I was able to move down to the really nice seats near center ice.

Why is that amazing? A lot more people care about the NBA than the NHL.

  • The NBA is like Saturday Night Live.
You only like the generation you grew up watching it seems.
I remember when it was Sandler/Spade/Schneider/Farley.. all people did was bitch about how unfunny it was... and now so many of us remember those as the good old days, and then it was "good until ferrell left"...

Same thing with the NBA.. Isiah/Bird/Magic/Jordan... blah blah.
I will admit there was kind of a dead time there at the end of the 90's...
but right now, as mentioned above, the league is very strong with both Youthful individuals (Paul, Lebron, Wade, etc) and slightly older guys like Duncan, KG and Nash.
