NBA To Cut 80 Jobs In Struggling Economy
The NBA will cut about 80 jobs, Commissioner David Stern told Reuters on Sunday.

Stern told the media outlet that the NBA will lay off about 9 percent of its workforce because of worries about the U.S. economy.

The commissioner told Reuters that there has been a decline in season-ticket renewals, and he expected that once the regular season starts at the end of the month, there will also be a drop in single-game ticket sales.

"We made a decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly, so we began a belt-tightening that will result in a work-force reduction of about 9 percent domestically," Stern told Reuters before a preseason game in London.

I won't be going to any games either they're TOOO damn expensive. I'd rather attend a hockey game instead.

Economy is hitting everybody will you skip out on any professional games?

  • On the same day, they announced they were going to start a joint project to build basketball arenas in China. Good timing on that announcement.

Too many thugs in basketball for me to care, plus I really can't stand Dick Vitale or Marv Albert. Albert makes every two points sound like they are the last to ever be scored and Vitale is simply annoying.

They're just as many thugs in ALL the other major sports. Vitale speaks from the heart and he cares about his sport basketball. The issue is that the sport has become far too expensie not that thugs supposedly are playing the game.

Nuggets tickets are still reasonable (you can get tickets for $15.00 a pop) so I will attend 5 to 10 games this year.
  • Shaq's salary alone would probably cover those 80 jobs. He's worthless anymore but I suppose I'm looking at this the wrong way.

It would be good karma if Stern's job was one of the 80 being cut. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of the the NBA.

The nose bleed seats here in Washington DC run about $40-$50 and that's just ridiculus.

I agree. Basketball has just gone downhill as a sport since guys like Jordan retired... for the second time.

The thugs are what turn me off, well those two announcers too, but mainly it is the thugs. There are some in other sports but not as many as the NBA.

Vitale is a college basketball commentator. There are quite a few less "thugs" in college basketball since they haven't been corrupted by their high salaries yet.

Now you have me thinking what exactly is a thug, this doesn't have anything to do with the sport basketball which is predominately made up of African Americans would it?

    You are reaching.

Do I really need to pull up all of the police reports of illegal activities committed by members of the NBA the last few years? I'm guessing there would be more than any other sport.

No more than hockey? I'll take my chances and lay my money on that bet.

Give me one hockey player, any hockey player in the NHL that is as bad as Ron Artest. Or Latrell Sprewell. Or Dennis Rodman, Jayson Williams, Kobe, Shawn Kemp, Jason Kidd, Isaiah Rider... the list goes on.

I can't stand professional basketball anymore. This is what happens when you raise ticket prices through the roof, to the point where it's too expensive to take your kids to see a game. All major sports are guilty of this and that is why I watch college sports. In college at least these kids are playing their asses off, not that they don't in the pros, but it is 3x cheaper to go see a game and sometimes far more thrilling.

ps. I agree with unsung that the NBA is crap now. I used to love basketball, watching people like Jordan, Pippen, Ewing, Bird, Magic, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, John Stockton, David Robinson, etc… These athletes where professional and they did what was best for the team. Now a days you have players who only care about how much money they make or how many touches they get a game. They bitch and complain if they don't play enough minutes or if another team mate got the ball in the last minute of the game. It's like watching a bunch of individuals on the court instead of a team. The quality has surely slipped in the NBA.

How about Todd Bertuzzi? I have no idea what about his life off of the ice, but on the ice, he committed the most dangerous, violent cowardly act I have ever seen in sports and now Steve Moore will never play again. And the NHL gave him...17 games.

And I know hockey players are white, but speaking of thugs...The shit they do on the ice, the way fighting is encouraged. There has to be a word for that (and it can't be thug, right?)

As for the expense, NHL is about as overpriced as the NBA anyway.

For both sports, I look at college first. Lot less (white word for thuggary) going on in college hockey.

(Truthfully, for pros I like the NHL better as the NBA is just so boring)

As for these 80 jobs, I wish Kevin McHale would make the list.

Bertuzzi was bad. So was McSorley.

Artest has been suspended how many times and for how long? Spreewell tried to kill PJ Carlesemo, Rodman kicked a photographer in the groin area amongst many other wrongdoings, Kobe may have gotten away with RAPE but we won't know because money talks, Iverson got away with kidnapping, how many NBA players have been arrested on drug charges? How about gun charges? How many NHLers have thumped their wives like Jason Kidd?

You really want to play a race card? Shall we go back ten years and list all of the trouble makers and see what their demographics are?

I know all these things (though I don't think Spreewell tried to Kill his coach). I was merely pointing out that thug means black.

Thug does not mean black. From Merriam-Webster's dictionary.

THUG – a brutal ruffian or assassin.

News to me. I didn't know it was reserved for the black population. I guess I can change it out for 'criminal' then.

You sure about that, well then I gather that you think Obama is a thug. That's like my boss today said about a black person who got off the elevator..."That looks like the tipical thief" I said why? he says he says "he's quiet and he moves fast" I said really or is it because he's black. He never said a word after that.

He came from behind him (like a fucking coward) and drove his head into the ice, knocking him out cold. It may not have been the hardest hit ever in sports and it may not have had the worst result (sometimes in football guys get paralyzed), but I have no recollection of anything dirtier, more cowardly and more reckless than that. While I am not a fan of the fighting in hockey ("part of the game" is encouragement), at least if Burtuzzi would have squared off with him (a fight, not an assault), there'd be some respect in that.

Wow. No. First off (to the prior posts), I did not mean Webster's, but the vernacular of the day. Secondly, I mean it's used as "bad dude" or whatever, but primarily in reference to blacks.

With the exception of the unbelievably expensive courtside seats in the NBA, I think the ticket prices are about the same. And the pricey courtside seats make some sense, as the views that close in hockey cost you a view of half the rink. So there are no comparably good seats there.
