"the environmentalist movement" meaning scientists who have been spreading all this global warming nonesense around lately. I exagerated his statement, but conservatives tend to search out any possible way to discredit the scientists who are studying climate change.
The "dogma" of the environmentalist movement is science.
it would be interesting for him to compare the "enviornmentalist movement" to the early "christian movement" and imagine nero saying similar things to them. anyone who wants to breathe clean air and eat uncontaminated food is an enviornmentalist. some are just more active.
all this Christianity bashing, and nobody's read the Bible...
all this is in the Book..maybe read it, instead of just spouting off
Been there. Even been to church for a few years. I learned the truth, but it sure wasn't what they were trying to teach me. Jesus has a lot to offer but the church (any church, really) corrupts his message.

i've read it; the forbidden books; and the currently discovered gospels of mary magdeline and judas. when i entered jesuit college prep; i intended to be a priest. i was required to take 4 years of theology.
maybe there's some things you don't know about how man has destroyed the church. like how; in 1635; the pope ordered galelleo assassinated because of his book that said the earth revolved around the sun.
is this the church you're defending? the one that kills a man for thinking?
just wondering.

Hey... you and I agree on something.
Weren't we put in charge by God to be the caretakers of this planet? Aren't we supposed to take care of the Garden?

yeah, but we're also supposed to rule the world and have dominion over all the animals and use them as we see fit.
Could have been, but I think he worded it poorly. His use of the phrase "dubious ideology" sort of leads me to question his impartiality.
i think believing that humans are the scum of the earth and nothing but a destructive force that should be ashamed of itself is as dubious of an ideology as the belief that humans are rulers of the universe and should do what we want with it.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Of course, but know one else is listening to those extremists, I don't see why someone would feel the need to warn us against them .
Seriously though, I see his point, but he comes off pretty damn biased to me in some ways.

yeah, just like no one else is listening to islamic jihadists or pat robertson. all im saying is the dude has told american christians to quit this anti-evolution, pro-creationism bullshit and in my book, that's a good thing.
"The 80-year-old Pope said the world needed to care for the environment but not to the point where the welfare of animals and plants was given a greater priority than that of mankind."
wtf? that pope should stick to his bible preaching instead.
Then people would be whinging about how he's not doing enough to help the environment...he can't win really.
It may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

Actually not exactly. He didn't need to set limitations on what he said. He could have just said "we need to protect the environment" and leave it at that, but he decided to tag on a stipulation as though the world exists because of (and to serve) man, rather than we a just are part of it, and no more important than the support system of life that we exist on, and because of. Remember that bee scare not too long ago? The loss of just the bee would wreak catastrophe to the modern world (hundreds of millions would die...perhaps a few billion). Me think Popey's taking a wee puff on the hard stuff...

i'm still trying to figure out how a man can get more prison time for beating a dog than he would for beating a man. maybe that's what he was talking about. i don't know. i think he should've been talking long ago about caring for the earth. he also could've said lets take a billion dollars worth of this gold and use it to help these struggling people. he'd never miss it and isn't that what he preaches anyway?
"The 80-year-old Pope said the world needed to care for the environment but not to the point where the welfare of animals and plants was given a greater priority than that of mankind."
The welfare of animals and plants IS the priority of mankind.. Without out them in proper order, we die!.. What a dumbass.
Then people would be whinging about how he's not doing enough to help the environment...he can't win really.
True enough.

I'm sorry but this is just stupid argumentation. I've heard this type of argument so many times already, on all subject : condomns, abortions...
The pope represents the ideas of the church. When he speaks, he speaks for his church, not to please you or to agree with you but just to state what he believes in (in another words to push the catholic agenda). It's like that, it's his job. The best you can do is to disagree with his positions, but you can't blame a pope for tainting his speach with religion and bible lessons.

his argument is far from stupid. the popes job is to connect with the people and set an example. in a time when people are leaviing the church in hoards; he must say things that bring people back to the church. restrictive statements like that won't bring people back to the church; but only send more away.

You sure as hell can. You're missing the point...it's an eco-system. This isn't a guess. Everything is dependent on one another. Man is not the center of the earth or universe anymore...news flash...
This all seems eerily similar as talking to people with the same mentality as those living 300 years ago.

isn't it man's thinking he's the center of the universe that caused this problem in the first place? WE are the animals the earth can do without.
for some reason it seems it is cool to rip on the Catholic church. Probably because it is the largest church in the world. But I just can't find anything wrong with what he said. Whats wrong with saying we should take care of the plants and animals as long as their welfare isn't put above mankinds welfare? If there is a drought in Africa and there are people, plants and animals dying shouldn't we put saving the people first? Maybe I am simplifying what he is saying but that is how I am reading this. We should take care of this planet and everything on it but we have to remember to take care of the people first. And in order to take care of people their environment must be treated with respect.
This is the post I feel is the key to the entire thread--not the "ripping the chruch" part, but where it gets into the interpretation of what the Pope said.
The pope said something that was somewhat vague. Perhaps intentionally and perhaps not.
The cynical environmentalist will interpret it as the same ol "Do what you can, but not at the expense of your own comfort." That's how I interpret it. I read "it's OK to be environmentally conscious, but don't put that ahead of human comfort." I am not right or wrong. It's just my interpretation.
Some may interpret it as him telling us (or just telling catholics?) to make some sacrifices for the earth, but don't bend over backwards to save some endangered species.
Others may interpret it as him saying to bust our asses and do all we can for the earth with the rare-case exception of saving a bunch of animals / plants in favor of people.
Vague statements like this are interpreted a million different ways and this is no exception.
I think most pope fans will interpret it to fit their own lifestyles, while most non-pope fans will interpret it as saying something they disagree with. Ultimately, I doubt this particular instance changes a lot.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

This is exactly why I said this reasoning is really wrong. It's a pope, so what he says will be based on what is written in the bible : the man is the center of the universe. It maybe too late for the church to say that the sun revolves around the earth but on a subject with grey areas such as this you can be sure that a pope, priest or a cardinal will make sure their speach holds a lot of bible references. It's like that. It's like people wondering why the pope is against abortion, "but doesn't he know it's the woman's choice??", he may know it but it's his role to speak against it. End of discussion. Now you can disagree with him (I disagree with him) but you can't call him a jerk for doing what he is paid for.

don't get me wrong. i'm a very spiritual person. i just think the church should be teaching the teachings of Jesus. it's lost that along the way.
