McCain calls Obama 'decent person,' is booed

McCain sort of can't win here.

Parnes reports from Minnesota:

A man in the audience stood up and told McCain he's "scared" of an Obama presidency and who he'd select for the Supreme Court.

"I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared of as president of the United States," McCain said as the crowd booed and shouted "Come on, John!"

"If I didn't think I'd be a heck of a lot better, I wouldn't be running for president of the united states."

If it's not the Times editorial board jeering him, it's his own crowd.

  • It's like they've created a monster and have lost control of it. There seems to me much more of an actual hatred toward Obama from the McCain crowd that doesn't exist the other way.

Wow. I actually have a little bit more respect for McCain now.

It's interesting that he said this in response to a comment about being scared of Obama's presidency because of who he would appoint to the Supreme Court. I think that's actually a legitimate concern, and I don't think it's necessarily disrespectful. (I feel the same way about McCain.)

I wonder why he didn't choose to say this in response to some of the extremely disrespectful things that HAVE been said about Obama. Was he just planning to say it and trying to fit it in somewhere? Or what?

That's a backhanded comment if I've ever heard one.

They've gone too far, and now it's going to be hard for them to step back from this nonsense.

I doesn't matter anymore...his campaign is in shambles and getting worse by the day.

This is why I think it's too little too late. The appropriate time to put a stop to this would have been the first time someone yelled "terrorist" or "off with his head". I think they are finding that this isn't working, and that it's getting negative attention in the press, which isn't going to help them attract the voters that they need right now.

They must get getting some polling that shows their negatives skyrocketing... Also, Norm Coleman is pulling all of this negative ads in his senate race. It at least appears that will all of the serious things going on, negative campaigning on petty issues may not be working this time around.

watching MSNBC before the Sox game ... I guess McCain had to actually tell to his supporters "Obama is not an arab" .... holy shit .... I missed the beginning of this, but, I think his rally went really bad today.

I just saw the clip of this, and I have to take this back. I don't think it was a backhanded comment; but I do think he is embarrassed of the direction of his campaign.

Ugh, that was painful to watch.

There are actually a ton of people out there that believe he is an Arab, thanks to a guest on Rush Limbaugh who claims to have found information that Obama is "part Arab". He offers no proof, of course. He simply challenges people to prove him wrong.

I didn't see the link to the rally in MN today were he had to backtrack on the damage his campaign and his bright VP pick have done.

he didn't get 1/2 point with me because what this shows me or at least it's what I believe is that his campaign pushed him to try this tactic, the trying to turn Senator Obama into an object of fear, now looks like it was never what he wanted to do but he ended up going with the flow because his campaign pushed him into going that way and now that he sees what that has caused he is trying to distance himself from that, how can we trust this guy with our country, to be a good leader when he can't even stand up for what he believes and tell him campaign "i do not want to engage in this type of dirty tactics" ... he didn't look very mavericky with this move... so yeah maybe he gains points for distancing himself from his campaigns dirty tactics but loses those points when showing us that he is just another Republican sheep!

what a fucking train wreck ... an eye opening video.

that's what you get when you hire the VERY same strategists that accused McCain of having a black baby out of wedlock in 2000 ... I can't believe McCain went for it ...

I think he's going to do some soul searching this weekend.

Man McCain can't win for losing. No matter which way he goes or what he says he catches hell. He can't catch a break for nothing.

yep. they are disintegrating by the day. and this has a snowball effect when moderates or undecideds see these zealots and dont want to be associated with it. i almost feel sorry for McCain. the conservatives press is gonna put this loss all on him, and deflect the fact that its really GEORGE W BUSH's fault all the way.

I've always had respect for John McCain. I think he is sincerely a nice guy.. I just don't want him to win.

I had respect for him until:

    1. He chose Palin as his running-mate.

    2. He started all this negative campaigning.

I lost respect for him when he reversed his opinion on Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and decided that he no longer believed them to be agents of intolerance. That was the beginning of the end.
  • There was a time when McCain was the one Republican I respected more than any others. He ran a hell of a campaign in 2000 and it's a shame that ended how it did. But the guy has totally lost his way in the last 6 months. He's not being himself and it's becoming obvious. He's the very definition of a sellout. I don't think he ever really wanted Palin, I believe the far right pushed her on him and he wasn't smart enough to say no. At least this clip shows us a little of the old McCain.

I would say Palin ... but ... I don't think she is going to recover from this embarassment so easily.

Maybe in 4 years ... but, that's even a stretch.

I really wonder what the next chapter in her political career will be, assuming she and McCain don't win in November. Will she continue to be this rising star? I imagine that her fans will make excuse after excuse for this abuse of power thing. But I just wonder if she will be passed over for another fad sooner or later.

I still believe she will be on Dancing with the Stars someday.
