I don't agree with him but that is free speech for you.

How is it any different than the liberal professors at Berkeley spewing their hate filled rants?

Hate is hate. Educators no longer teach facts instead they brainwash you with their opinions from both sides.

On second thought, I would probably punch the teacher in the face, then walk out.

So you think, a teacher dropping the N word seriously in a PUBLIC school is A OK? Fine because of free speech?

    Ok then.

Did I say it was ok? I said that I don't agree with him. Is your problem a reading problem or comprehension?

I don't agree with flag burning either but it is allowed by free speech, and it doesn't mean I would stand there and watch it happen.

I've seen evidence of this on another message board recently. Someone said one of his "educators" told the class that oil was a renewable resource. A professor who is a mod on that board and I both tried to convince him that it is not, but he refuses to believe either of us.

I agree... it is freedom of speech. But, with freedom comes responsibility and accountability.
And there is a difference between a 7th Grade teacher and a Berkley Professor. You probably don't have enough time to instill your political opinions on a 7th Grader, but you hope by the time they reach college age... they have either come in line with your political views or have formed their own opinions and can argue their points with a dissenting view. A 7th Grader normally looks at their teacher as an authority figure that is to be respected and obeyed... whereas a college student is more likely to question adults as equals. Plus... not many 7th Graders register to vote.
If your college aged kids are so easily 'brain-washed'... it pretty much means that either you have failed as a parent stand by and defend their beliefs... or your kid is a dope.

well, oil is renewable, in a certain sense. when all the rain forests and all the oceans and its inhabitants die off, all that carbon will be turned into fossil fuels, and crude oil eventually. In that sense oil is a RENEWable resource. It may take thousands of years for it to be useful, but in the true sense of the word it is renewable.

Alienating someone for using a term you may not agree with makes you no better than alienating a person for the color of their skin.

Personally, I could give a fuck about any word you use. Words can only hurt if you let them

Actions (or inactions) should be used to judge a person's character, not the words they use.

    seriously.

all this "freedom of speech" ... "it's only words" ...

For those that are playing the "it's only words" card, answer this question ... if YOUR 7th grader was in this class and came home and told you what their teacher told them CHANGE stood for, as did this teacher ... if that teacher was still allowed to teach, would you keep your kid in their class?

Let's remember, your inaction to this comment is just as big of a lesson to your kids as the teacher putting this acronym on the board.

If any teacher had even so much as said that word when I was in 7th grade, their ass would have been fired within the week. This kind of thing is unacceptable.

Ok then, explain to me how this teacher's opinion on Obama is any different than your opinion of said teacher. Especially in the context you know nothing about this teacher other than this reported comment.

Would you feel any different about the comment if this teacher was black?

Lastly, if kids by the time they are in 7th grade do not understand the lack of power words can have, then they must have one shitty time adjusting to middle school

First, are you saying using and teaching hate speak (which this teacher did) is the same as me wanting this guy to be fired? How exactly am I being racist?

This was not part of some lesson plan, or there would have been a statement of such .... thus, can you tell me what possible context could a teacher putting Come Help a N'r Get Elected on a blackboard would be ok?

    Not at all ...

Actually with kids, words can be VERY powerful.

While I would agree that parents should shoulder far more of a responsibility in teaching their kids than they normally do, that does not mean I'd want my kids around hate speech during the day. And I would protect them from having to sit in a PUBLIC CLASSROOM that condones it.

Again, this is the 7th grade ... we're not talking about some high school / college level course discussing societies racism ...

Well it depends on if he says something like the above C-H-A-N-G-E to a class of white students in a mostly white city or town. I'm pretty sure it would make some news somewhere.

If he said the same to black students that might not make any news in a predominately black city/town.

I just asked my 7th grade 12 yr old daughter the question if her SS teacher posed this her class and what would she do?

She said she would ask her teacher why and what does this have to do with running for President? Then she said she would walk downstairs to the principal's office and tell her principal. Her school is a small Catholic school.

I really doubt that. Considering the current housing crisis I doubt anyone moves because of some idiot teacher, so save the dramatics. Kids can be moved into other classes and the teacher could be fired.

I was saying since the teacher WASN'T fired.

    Political Correctness!

That just goes to show...nobody screamed "PC." If you're going to be racist, don't use the N word. If you don't use the N-word, then anyone who gets "offended" can be dismissed as PC. If you use it, you're stupid and deserve what you get.
