Why in the world does this man still have his job???

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/03/report-florida-teacher-suspended-racially-charged-obama-comments/

A Florida middle school teacher has been disciplined for writing a racially offensive phrase about Barack Obama on his classroom dry-erase board last month.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported Friday that school officials learned the teacher wrote the phrase in a 7th grade class of mostly white students.

The phrase, which invoked Obama's campaign slogan, said, "C.H.A.N.G.E. -- Come Help A (N-word) Get Elected."

According to the newspaper, the teacher, Greg Howard, was suspended for 10 days without pay and will be forced to write a letter of apology to the students. He will also be reassigned to teach in the adult education program.

The Marianna Middle School teacher has been teaching in the district for 17 years, the paper reported.

If this happened when I was that age, I'd probably do the same, but I'd tell the teacher to go fuck himself first.

For what he did is a horrible thing to do in front of children. That is the only reason he should be fired not for using the word. How come it is so bad when any person other than an African American uses the word we are up in arms? To stop the spread of the word all people need to stop using it in a derogatory manor as well as a friendly manor between black people. Anyone using this word is wrong is what I am trying to say.

I would do the same...even though I have never heard what C.H.A.N.G.E. meant before.

I'm just curious, can you give me one example where the word could be used in every day speech?

I mean, I get what you're saying, there are different levels of using the word ... but ... why even use the word? Ever?

What meaning does it have that makes a sentance clearer? What meaning could it have that a white perosn should use it over some other word?

I agree.. I feel NO ONE should use it.. in my opinion it is the most awful, dirtiest, hate filled word in the English language.

I am just saying that white people are not thte only ones that should be accountable for the use of the word. It is all over hip hop cd's. If black people continue to use it. The word will never go away.

I guess the only reason he wasn't fired was because the N word was not directed at any of the students. A technicality.

This man should have been fired and had his teaching certification revoked permanently.

I'm not an expert on this, but I think tenure would be like a contract which could be ended due to certain violations. Blatant racism should be one of them.

I wonder if a black teacher did this what his punishment would've been? He should've faced far severe punishment.

Yes, but firstly the school board would have to want to force him out over this (which I'd say isn't a given) and secondly, it may be something he could portray as (somehow) having academic merit. I'm not saying it does, by any means, but a decent lawyer could give it a go. It's possibly a fight the school board couldn't be bothered with.

From a black person's perspective: You know I was trying hard to come up with something negative to stand for C-H-A-N-G-E and cracker was the furtherest thing from my mind.

and this is north florida...redneck and racist (though i know this is the exception and not the rule). my family lives in a small town north of gainesville and this racist speak is still pretty common...even amongst those my age. it's been a disturbing fact since i was forced to moving to florida...and the reason that i moved away from the area as soon as i was able once i graduated from high school...and i hate to go back.

this teacher should have been fired on the spot...no questions asked!!!

I came up with that, never meant to imply you did. teachers teaching racism seems to be what we have to deal with. true education seems to be our best weapon against that. I"M sorry if I implied anything derogatory.

I believe people are intelligent, and that it takes fools like this teacher to corrupt that. I believe people can think for themsleves, given the chance, and that deep down we are intelligent. I think fear is taught, and life is too short for that. I think the world could be one community, I think we could all share the resources of this planet. I also think greed is preventing us from that. I think we could all live in luxury, in comfort, and that a corrupt few in charge are preventing us from realizing our potential. I believe in a better world, and I KNOW its possible. And I will not sit by and let them control us, I will not be subserviant. I will fight to my last breath, until we get what's ours. Until equality has risen, until the world gets what's theirs.

Not bad for you and I to understand but for 7th graders that might be a bit over their heads. Tomorrow I'm going to pose this question to my daughter what this teacher showed his students.

I'd love to hear what she'll say since she's been to so man peace marches here in DC.

to be fired after your first three years of teaching, you have to pretty much commit a felony.
