Common sense should surely tell you that most normal people in the western world wont know where they were when that happened, and a lot of people wont actually know it happened at all, which isnt really their fault.


On the actual subject of this thread, i was in my 6th and final year at secondary school and sitting in the common room with some friends when one of the woman came in from the school office with the register and told us about it. If im honest, i didnt actually know what the Trade Centre was at that time. I knew those buildings obviously, but couldnt have put a name to them. Wasnt untill i went home and saw the news that i realised how serious it was.

Flying into Toronto to see Pearl Jam..... Of course I never heard a word about it until I saw the paper the next day. But I remember!

Ed referenced the bombing from the stage...."speaking as a dumbass, beer drinking, missile shooting, propaganda believing American"...or something along those lines.

Senior at college went to bed steaming drunk from the night before at 3 am, woke up for my early Tuesday class, and walked by my friend's apt while he was smoking a ciggy on his balcony. He says he literally turned around 10 seconds after I left and saw almost the whole thing, but I was down the road before he could tell me. Went to class, and on the way back I saw people crying, but I couldn't figure out what was going on ... so I did anything a half-drunk senior in college would do ... passed out until the incessantly ringing phones woke me. My roommate lost a neighbor in the attacks, but the American recourse was something neither he or I enjoyed watching/experiencing...in fact, if anything, it drove us both to being more critical of our government.

Seventh grade social studies class.. my friends and I had just walked in and our teacher (soccer player, hippie, etc. coolest guy ever) had the news on and just told all of us to be quiet.

I remember it vividly.

Oh man I remember it clearly. I remember watching a recording of the first tower getting hit on CNN, and then suddenly they showed live footage of the second plane hitting the other tower. I saw both towers fall as it happend.
Thank God I wasnt there!!

I was in my office in Princeton,NJ ( I worked for a Telecom company at the time) and our switch techs sent out a company wide email that the first Tower was hit by a plain. Our Switch site in NJ was located in Jersey City directly across the river in Newport Plaza. Anyway, my office was a NOC and we had 3 100" tv(projection) screens with the news on. Then as we are discussing who did it and what happened I tried to get my wife on the phone who was on her way to the city for work. When I got her on the phone (she was on the train) I was telling her what happened and then the 2nd plain hit. I couldn't believe what I just saw, I told her to get off that f*ckin train now but she wouldn't listen to me. I told her that we the US was under attack and she just couldn't get it, she could not grasp what a lot of us just saw. Anyway, at that point I lost her. Cell service was basically gone for everyone. I could not get her at all. About an hour or so past and I finally got her at the showroom in NYC. Now at that point we heard about the Pentagon. I proceeded to tell her what was going on and at this point she got it.

She is okay and I got her out of the city the next morning. She was taken in by a coworker who lived in the city and then they brought her to the Path station the next morning so I could get her. I honestly did not sleep for about 72 hours or so. I knew a lot of people in lower manhattan and some of them are relatives who thankfully all made it out in one piece. I left out a ton of details but that is the jist of that day for me.

She doesn't work in the city anymore.....

I was at work here in Boston. Actually found out because the girl who sat beside me was from Spain and her mother called her.

ummm, im pretty sure i was in class last year on that day. clearly nothing memorable or important. this year... not sure. probly class again.

I was getting ready for a morning appointment in midtown NYC (lived on Long Island). Luckily, I was running behind, and checking the news at that time.

After the first plane hit - my folks called and said "be careful and stay away from lower manhattan". After the second plane - I called to cancel my business appointment.

Had to call a friend for updates, since I couldnt handle the imagry. After the first tower fell - I hopped in the car (about 25-30 miles east) and drove south to the beach. On the drive, looked to the right where you could usually see the towers - all I saw was a huge dust cloud.

Watched the ocean for a few minutes. Soon after - they closed the beaches for "national security". Not sure why.

That night - they had AWAX planes and military planes flying overhead - way above. The next day, an aircraft carrier was just off shore. I was not expecting to see that floating city on active-duty so close to home.

That whole week (starting a few days earlier) I was packing up my apartment to move out of state to open my business, as well as packing up the home my parents lived in for 30 years since they were moving at the same time. Very emotional week.

According to Wikipedia about my old hometown "On a per capita basis, the village of Garden City lost the largest number of people in the attacks of 9/11" but I have yet to actually find out who I know who died.

In NY and on cable news channels, there were no commercials for about a week (from my recollection). When I moved, just days afterwards, I made sure my satellitte system had NYC channels, and still no commercials.
